Waitukubuli National Trail Project Management goes on promotion and awareness campaign

Hikers on the Waitukubuli National Trail

The Waitukubuli National Trail Project Management Unit continues its partnership for awareness and promotion of the trail, a potential flagship tourism product for Dominica.

Two activities will be taking place on July 2nd 2011:

1)    A Summer Challenge Hike on Segment 8 which is being undertaken with the two main hiking clubs in Dominica – the DABEX and Dwivayez hiking clubs. The challenge hike is open to avid hikers and true adventurers interested in hiking the segment, which will be done in the reverse direction from Petite Macoucherie to First Camp, Marigot. Segment 8 is one of the more beautiful and tranquil segments, and is very long with no trail exit points along the way, and should only be attempted by very experienced and seasoned hikers. It is also advisable that participants prepare themselves physically and mentally for this ordeal, which will start at 5:30 a.m.

2)    “WNT-Kalinago Awareness Day” – an education and Community Partnership programme targeting the youth and the wider Kalinago Community.  This will be undertaken in collaboration with the Carib Council, the Primary Schools and other organizations in the community.

Activities for the day will include:

–    Garbage Bin painting. These painted bins will be placed in key locations within the community to encourage proper waste disposal;
–    WNT Segment 6 Trail Enhancement and Clean Up.
–    Tree Planting and Beautification of Segment 6 Trail Access and Exit Points.
–    Mini exhibition highlighting community heritage, shared experiences, dissemination of information, inter-schools quiz and traditional games and addresses by local resource persons and officials. This will occur in the afternoon.

The Project Management Unit applauds the high interest and public support and ownership for the WNT and encourages the public to continue to register hikes with the Project Management Unit and the Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division. It is imperative that we all play our part in the protection and safeguard our natural resources, the trail and its infrastructure.

    Congratulations to The Waitukubuli National Trail Project Management Unit, the DABEX and Dwivayez hiking clubs for promoting the trail with such enthusiasm. I like the theme song on their website:
