Farmers and fishers on the island are being advised to take necessary precautions in light of the impending severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Bret. According to the 6:00 p.m. weather advisory from the Dominica Meteorological Service, as of 5 a.m. the tropical storm watch for Dominica will continue.
A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours. The Fisheries Division advises fishers, divers, and small craft operators to secure all equipment, including boats, fishing gears, and outboard engines among other equipment to avoid any damage or loss.
“Every year annually the ministry always advises farmers and fishers to be vigilant and be on the alert and with the impending Tropical Storm that’s on the horizon, we are also reminding them of the actions that they should have taken come June 1,” Communications Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture, Petra Grell-Shillingford said during a live interview with State-Owned Radio DBS on Wednesday morning. She continued, “It’s nothing new, it’s just a gentle reminder to listen to the weather report and to take precaution.”
Grell- Shillingford advises Livestock farmers to ensure that they have adequate supply of feed and water.
She also advises crop farmers to visit their farms, “to look at their crops to see if it’s ready for harvest.”
To the farmers involved in seamoss production, “they would have their dates of harvest and would have to be mindful of that.”
Furthermore, Grell-Shillingford said honey production is rather a booming industry right now, “So all these farmers would have to really look at their individual farms and their enterprises and see what’s best for them.” Meantime, she advised farmers to wear proper garden boots and be attired properly whenever they visit their farms. “We just want to remind the farmers that they should really take precautions, take the necessary measures and have all their documents in place…,” she stated.
