Father and son announce retirement from calypso; cite victimisation, favouritism and unfair criticism in the artform

Renowned veteran calypsonian Joey Lloyd, recognized in the calypso arena as Explosion, and his son Jamaal Lloyd, a prominent figure in the entertainment scene known as Black Diamond, have jointly declared that this year will mark their last participation in the national Calypso Competition. This announcement met with a sense of melancholy, has stirred a wave of sadness among their numerous fans.

On January 17, 2023, Jamaal Lloyd took to Facebook to share a poignant reflection on his journey in the calypso scene. Recounting his ascent to fame in the calypso arena at the young age of 18 with the controversial hit “Pit Toilet”, Jamaal unveiled a journey marked by challenges and alleged victimization.

“This year will be my last year in a Calypso Competition,” the statement began. “I started off singing one of the most controversial songs in maybe the last 20 years which was titled “Pit Toilet”. This song being so controversial hit a lot of nerves maybe even to this day. I remember a cousin of mine making a statement to me after the Calypso season and I will never forget it. ‘Jamaal you need to be careful ’cause those people may try to stop you for years to come”. I was 18 years old at the time and didn’t really pay mind to it.”

However, reflecting on his early warnings about potential obstacles, Jamaal acknowledged a history of frustration and even temporary exits from the Calypso scene due to perceived agendas against him.

“Over the years I’ve seen it more prevalent throughout my life not only in Calypso but in other aspects. I have even left Calypso for many seasons in my earlier years because of those frustrations after getting advice from the great Young Bull that if they continue to push their agenda on me I should leave for a while to organize things with my personal life and then return if I wish,” he disclosed.

According to him, this agenda set against him has resulted in a series of setbacks in his career, ranging from missed job opportunities to exclusion from the esteemed stage of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF). He lamented, “I’ve been ripped off from job opportunities, taken off from opportunities to perform in the Rising Star segment of WCMF by certain individuals even after I was recommended by others.”

Jamaal further elaborated on a challenging period when his involvement with a band was marred by threats aimed at removing him from the roster to secure a coveted performance slot at WCMF. Despite the obstacles, he expressed satisfaction in witnessing the flourishing state of the band today. Jamaal acknowledged that while the success of the band couldn’t solely be attributed to his sacrifices, he took pride in being an integral part of the band’s developmental process.

Further reflecting on his artistic choices, Jamaal emphasized his commitment to addressing diverse and sometimes sensitive topics over the years. He noted, “Over the years, I’ve always chosen different types of topics that most people would be cautious with before tackling. Social issues, which we fear may be sensitive to some but need to be put to light to deliver a message on the stance of morality.”

In a rapidly changing world with evolving moral values, Jamaal expressed a profound respect for the diversity of opinions and lifestyles. He asserted that, in return, his perspectives should be acknowledged and respected without any personal vendettas against him. “Just like how the King Dices, the King Trilla G’s, and King JayDee’s are fearless with their types of topics I am fearless with mine as well,” he posited.

In his latest Calypso titled “No Bull”, Jamaal delves into current social issues with a potency reminiscent of his controversial debut. He hinted at deeper forces influencing the Calypso world, suggesting a personal agenda against him.

“This year I came out with a very well-written Calypso titled “No Bull”. With the current social issue, it is putting light upon and how it is well masked with its lyrical content you can almost call it a Pit Toilet x2. Times have changed and certain entities have gained more power in the world than they had in 2012. And their hands are deep in the crevice of Calypso as well as other genres here.”

He continued, “I will not give certain information but with my placement I saw in the Quarterfinals on Saturday I realize it’s deeper than Calypso with me and an agenda may be trying to be pushed on me personally but it hasn’t broken [me] since I was an 18-year-old in College and it will not break me now, cause at the end of the day Calypso doesn’t need me.”

Acknowledging the wealth of talent in the current Calypso landscape, Jamaal expressed confidence in the future, mentioning emerging artists like King Trilla G, Shanice, Mighty D, and De Healer. He also commended Sheldon “Shelly” Alfred for contributing to elevating the art form through his writing.

“Honestly from a medical and physical standpoint it may be difficult for me to handle further anyway,” he averred. “My battle is deeper than Calypso and it may be a battle I may need to fight by getting even closer to God on a spiritual level. Thank you for all the support over the years and I truly appreciate and love you all.”

Adding weight to this announcement, Jamaal’s father, Joey also confirmed his retirement from Calypso succeeding a 50-year stint in the genre.

Joey commented under Jamaal’s post, “I am in full support and agreement with your decision. It has been a pleasure writing for you (and your sister StingRay) in the local calypso arena. I will likewise bow out of the said arena (as StingRay has already very wisely done), as some of my best literary works have been publicly very unfairly criticized (some for their own personal reasons) by persons who will in the future have to find another avenue to spew their venom.”

He continued, “Case in point; those agents of division and destruction have been advising for years on end, that you change your writer, although my works have sent you to the calypso finals every single time, save the years of “Neighbourhood” and the unfortunate year of  “Doe look for my tongue”. Some even contended that I was preventing you from achieving your full potential by being in the competition myself, notwithstanding their knowledge that you get the first draw on my works.”

The seasoned calypsonian expressed a sense of obligation to gracefully exit the scene, attributing his decision to what he perceived as a situation showing no signs of improvement. He specifically highlighted apprehensions regarding the objectivity of judges who have been in their roles for an extended period.

“One can only knock one’s head against a brick wall for a limited time. Our situation will very not improve but worsen, especially with the current slate of judges, most of whom have been there for the past 20 years, much too long to remain objective and to avoid favouritism. This comment is not to slight the judges either, but they may very well have gotten to a stage where they are (in their minds) our competitors and not just adjudicators.”

Expressing gratitude to fans and friends for their unwavering support, the father-son duo bid farewell to the Calypso arena, leaving behind a legacy marked by artistic integrity and resilience. Explosion, as he is fondly known in the Calypso arena, has left an indelible mark on the Calypso scene for an impressive 50 years. His journey began at the tender age of 12 in 1973 when he participated in the DGS Junior Monarch Show for two consecutive years alongside Shakey and Haxey.

At the age of 16, he further showcased his talent in the Mahaut Village Calypso Monarch, performing alongside his brother Jerry, now recognized as De Oracle. This period saw him take on multiple roles within the teenage band B-Plus, functioning as the lead and rhythm guitarist, keyboard player, and lead vocalist at various intervals.

Joey’s artistic prowess extended beyond performing, as he wrote and composed “The Blade” for Senior Calypso King “Venturer”. His contributions also involved working as support staff with Calypso icons Super L and Hurricane, and he served as the stage manager for De Hunter during his triumphant years, collaborating with team members Edgar Hunter and Mervin Paul.

Notably, Explosion ventured into the Business Calypso competition in 2006/7, representing the AID Bank with his distinctive persona, “Green Plantain”, securing a commendable 3rd place. This period coincided with his management of De Oracle, showcasing his multitasking abilities. In 2008, he took on a new challenge by joining the DCA Senior Monarch competition, further demonstrating his enduring passion for the art form.

    Calypsonian or gangster!
Well, they say like father, like son, you stand there looking like a cupple of thugs holding up your gang signs and complaining.
Any wonder neither of you can win anything!
The best composition, the best vocals along with stage appearance and physical performance are always the winner!
Based on your appearance in your master piece we are viewing, I doubt you will be missed where Calypso is concerned.
Count your losses, and make your exist into the land of Calypso oblivion!

Many times in life we hurt ourselves and we turn and blame others. How can one expect to win when there is maybe a winner before competition. you all made it to the semi finals be thankful. What is this? A call of sympathy to the final.

You are speaking nonsense. What Black Diamond is saying people with big agendas is shaping up people lives in this country. According to what you sing might affect you immediately or in the future. This is not right and some people must stop imposing their will on you. What you mean you make semis and be thankful? People like you that have the country in that state where some people cant think freely and make decisions without being implicated. We should all respect each other but if a decision is made on ones life he/she should not be punished. You are therefore burying your doctrine and belief on me.

Hello and good morning my people. Well Mr Lloyd there are people in Dominica that have long arms and they does thing behind people back. My sister and I tried to open a business in Dominica a few years ago but I was stumped by one question which was, who did you vote for even though we never voted in Dominica. The government employees gave us a look and I knew our application wasn’t going anywhere. Your son has a sweet soca voice and he’s really talented. I saw him sang a few years ago when I came to Dominica. My suggestion is that both of you should moved to Trinidad and Tobago or to New York where you can further your entertainment career. It’s very sad that both of you aren’t getting the recognition you deserve so you must do what’s in your family best interest. I love to visit my country but I can’t understand why our people are so vindictive to our fellow citizens.

France just appointed an openly gay prime minister.

Yet in Dominica, the likes of “these people” are constantly fascinated with “bullying, homosexuality, and LGBTQI+++.

    Self-righteous bellyaching.

It seems that every dog and cat in Dominica who does not succeed in one venture quickly points to some unnamed and unknown hand “victimizing” him/her for unknown and unstated seemingly nonexistent reasons. Somebody always “has it out” for them or “pressing them.” They cannot identify the source of the victimization or the reason for this, but in their unduly inflated self-image, someone is targeting them.

Thanks for your service. Have a look in the mirrors around you for the source of your misfortunes. Too many self-appointed gods in Dominica!
