In a night set to be filled with rhythm, wit, and musical prowess, 43 calypsonians are gearing up to face off for a coveted spot at the quarterfinals in the first leg of the Calypso show. Dominica News Online (DNO) caught up with Davidson “Observer” Victor, the president of the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA), who shared insights into the anticipated event.
“We have a total of 43 calypsonians carded for tonight’s eliminations, including four newcomers: De Trial, Dhar Gelle, Suzie Q, and Diviner,” revealed Victor, adding that the mix of fresh talent promises to bring new perspectives and styles to the stage. Adding to the excitement, the event boasts a lineup of seasoned veterans, including past kings and road march champions. “Observer”, a former two-time calypso monarch and road march king, will be in the elimination round. Joining him is Sye, a former road march monarch, and Jama B, a consistent finalist, to name a few.
The elimination round, constituting the first leg of the calypso season, will see 12 contestants chosen from the pool of 43 to advance. These selected few will join the other 20 who made it to the quarterfinals last year, making a total of 32 for the quarter final stage. The venue for this musical showdown is the Valley Road venue, the former Coca-Cola building located between the Dominica Grammar School and the Public Service Union, opposite the Botanical Garden.
The show is set to begin at 8 pm, with $20.00 regular and $30.00 VIP seating available.
