The Dominicans at UVI association (DAU) is pleased to announce the results of its poetry contest. Although only four Dominican high school students participated in the contest, DAU members were very pleased that these talented young individuals took time out to participate.
The poems were judged by three professors of the University of the Virgin Islands:
1. Tregenza A. Roach, Esq. (Humanities professor)
2. Dolace McLean, PhD, Esq. (English professor)
3. Vincent Cooper, PhD. (English Professor)
Gael Jno-Baptiste of the Dominica Grammar School will receive the winning prize of an HP laptop. In second place, Lackia Williams of the Convent High School will receive the Archos E-book. Chelsea-Ann Martin of the Dominica Grammar School will receive $US 100.00 as the third place prize winner. Ronessa Joseph of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School will receive a complimentary gift from DAU.
Gael’s poem portrays a stunning depiction of Dominica’s past – the past we loved, how things have changed and how we should ‘…save our long ago’ today. Lackia’s poem begins with a description of how Dominicans lived their past and although it has changed a bit, she reminds us that ‘…we can still smile, because we are the nature isle’.
DAU would like to thank these young individuals for participating. Members are sure that the meaningful gifts will assist the winners with their studies.
