I have a good track record – Carib Chief candidate, Garnet Joseph

Incumbent Carib Chief, Garnet Joseph, says he is keeping his fingers crossed and is hoping that his track record will be able to win him another term in office.

Joseph has been Chief since 2009 and before that from 1999-2004.

He is trained in Business Administration and has been a member of the Carib Council since 1982. He is also the manager of the Karifuna Cultural Group.

Joseph told Dominica News Online he believes that his hard work will pay off.

“I have a very good track record of accomplishment starting back from 1978 with the founding of the Karifuna Cultural group, with Caribbean Liberation Movement (CLM), Kalinago week …and being able to deliver the very best to the Kalinago people,” Joseph said.

He, along with three other candidates, was nominated on Tuesday, to contest the election for the office of the Carib Chief. He is vying for a second consecutive term.

The other candidates include: two former chiefs, Irvince Auguiste and newcomer, Jumadine Frederick who we told us of their plans if elected, and former chief Charles Williams.

“I would like to be given a second term because there are a number of programs that have started that is not finished and I think that these are important for the development of the territory, and hence I think that I am the most suited person to continue them to the end,” Joseph continued.

The uncompleted programs he explained, include the much talked about financial facility that when established, will provide the avenue to on-lend funds to the residents of the territory thus improving their standard of living.

“And this is something that we know that we are being plagued with, hence we think that it is important that, that be put in place. Since that has started, they would want to ensure that I get back there and finish it. As far as that is established I do not have to be in office any more, I think that I would have satisfied.”

Joseph said is hoping to seek a loan of EC$ 10 million from a local bank to set up the facility. He said the proposal has been completed and they are hoping to tap into the human resource in the territory to run the institution.

He pointed to Salybia Health Centre, as one of the projects in which he has “greatly assisted”. He pointed out that although it’s a work in progress, the residents (of the Kalinago Territory) can boast of it as being one of the best in the country. He said his plans also include the acquisition of dental equipment and to provide employment for the numerous university graduates who are returning home to the territory.

When asked what would be his main focus if given another chance, he replied that it would be the economic development of his people.

DNO is also hoping to highlight the ideas and plans of another former Carib Chief, Charles Williams who is again running for office this time around. So far, we’ve made several attempts to contact Mr. Williams without success.

Is it true dat government refuse to allow the ROSS university to take over the management of the Salybia Health facility?
Chief joseph there are many things you let pass under your nose:
    1. bad distribution of the housing scheme
    2. foreign contractor for the St.Cyr Resource Centre
    3. Another church being built in Gaulette River- religion is one of our main division.
Some of these projects you can’t blame government, you have more power than them. Common chief Joseph you did not stand , give somebody else a chance who can do it! Good bye!

The same persons asking about the K. D. C and the 10million are the same ones who are shouting skero skero. Why not ask him for the money and say to him no money no vote. So what are we talking about. Stop dividing our people and stand up for our rights as Kalinago People.
Give the man a second chance. Don’t put skero in our carib politics.

Mr. Joseph can finish the tasks, only if he is given another term.
Common Kalinagoians, give the man another chance. The only one with experience among the rest.

You all so concerned about the US$10 million Charvez dollars, Chief Joseph has sold out to Skerro but you all voted Skerro in 2009 and now preparing to vote for him again. Why all this level of hypocrisy? Get serious. You fighting for Skerro and you want people to fight against SKerro , what the hell else you all want.

Since you are so interested in the kalinago people how come you spent 5 years in office and you know of the president Chavez fund that was for the same intention you are now talking, yet you never called for that money that was hijacked by Skerrit and Kelly Graneau. did you say in one of your in house meetings that was water under the bridge.
