3% raise for public servants approved, non-salary benefits rejected

Letang

Government has refused to honor some sections of a provisional agreement for public servants but the Public Service Union (PSU) says it will not accept anything less than what they received the nod for and has decided on a plan of action following a executive meeting on Tuesday.

General Secretary of the PSU Thomas Letang said in a recent interview that his union received a letter from government last Friday indicating that although the three percent wage increase had been approved by cabinet there were some non-salary benefits that were refused.

“We accepted the three percent on the condition that the non-salary issues would have been approved by cabinet,” Letang said. No reasons were provided for the decision to reject some of these benefits.

He added that this outcome was unacceptable since negotiations between representatives of both parties have already adopted that proposal which was already taken to the general membership of the PSU.

In response, however, the union’s general secretary said several “strategies have been adopted” at Tuesday’s meeting. He did not disclose what these strategies were but assured that they will be very much recognizable when employed.

In an interview on September 15, Letang said: “In the event that the government does not accept the provisional agreement we ourselves will not be in a position to accept anything that is not exactly what the provisional agreement was all about.”

Government had been given two weeks to get the proposal approved through the cabinet.

“We believe we are being very reasonable. We have been extremely fair and we expect nothing less than for the government to accept the provisional agreement because that was discussed over and over and over again,” Letang said.

@THA TRUTH: From your words you are not honestly interested in Public Servants but just want to relay hating phrases of our Prime Minister. Well my friend you have a lot of hating to do because our Prime Minister is going to be at the realm for a very long time. Some of you all are yet to accede that he won the General Elections quite handsomely. He is a special man well blessed by the almighty. I am satisfied with the 3% increase anyway.

It is clear that we are unable to devorce the message from the messanger, The DPSU is not Mr. Letang it is all public Officers and when the masses are dsipersed, confused or parochially following partisan interest, then their vision is compromised. They cannot even recognise who represent their interest.

public officer carry great responsibility in this country and the benefits spread far and wide to some of the very critics and nay sayers. The challenge is for all of us to stand on the side of justice and support the unions position. This very position is justified since we know the mission and tendancies of the powers that be. We may need to learn that in this matter, savarin may carry greater responsibility than skiero. Dominicans stand up for justice, public officers deserve your support.

Our biggest problem in Dominica is that we have no balls. We settle for less all the time. We do not have the guts to stand up for what we believe in. Wake up Dominicans, a famine is about to come upon this land. This country is getting poorer and poorer. Open your eyes. When the citizens of a country cannot buy the basic necessities – FOOD – one has to wonder what is next. I guess this is part of the NEXT LEVEL

A lot of these young people who so blindly accept or worship the “omnipotent ” actions …did not live through that date.

What is wrong with my country?.

    September 23, 2010

Dominican WORKERS BEING FOOLED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. How long can that fooling of the people by the Skerritt led DLP GOVT. go on? Dominicans like it so? Is so Dominica come? Dominicans can’t trust that administration not for a minute. Do Dominicans love one man, Skerritt so much against their own interest? The standard of living of the majority of Dominicans is getting worse day by day, while the few are bathing in assets (wealth) obtained in quick time through all kinds of controversial means. Yet still, many will continue to defend one man who has shown, time and time again, that his personal interest and that of his party come first before country? Foreigners get all sorts of concessions, some make $$$$$$$ selling passports, our property, but Dominican workers’ non-salary issues, initially agreed upon by their GOVT., are later rejected? Labad used to say,’TIME WILL TELL.’

    1. GOVERNMENT SAID IF PSU TAKES THE 3% INCREASE THEY WILL GIVE THEM THE SOME NON-SALARY ISSUES.
    2. EVEN THE PM GAVE HIS SUPPORT AND APPROVAL
    3. ALL OF A SUDDEN GOVERNMENT IS CHANGING IT’S MIND AND SAYING NO TO THE NON-SALARY ISSUES, WITHOUT ANY EXPLAINATION

COME ON DOMINICANS LET US STICK TO THE ISSUES HERE.

    A) THE GOVERNMENT HAS SHOWN DISRESPECT TO IT’S WORKERS.
    B) LOOKS LIKE THEIR (GOVERNMENT) WORDS CANNOT BE TRUSTED.

THE UNION NEEDS SUPPORT IN TIMES LIKE THESE. IF IT WAS NOT FOR THE UNION SO MANY OF US WOULD BE OUT IN THE COLD.

AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GIVE MR. LETANG A BREAK, THE GENTLEMAN HAS ALWAYS WORKED IN THE BEST INTEREST OF HIS UNION, NO MATTER WHAT.

I suspect I’ll die before that increase come
Not too long ago there was an article with charles savarin saying yes to it
Now Mr. letang says that it was only partially accepted

Well Mr. Letang tell them 20% and forget the non salary part
and strike if you don’t get your way that’s all

People seem to think that public servants in Dominica have these Glamorous salaries yet the difference between perception and reality is like night and day husbands AND wives put together struggle much less for those that are on their own.

Cost of living has been rising and VAT has been put in place. Our combined salary increase since the introduction of VAT is about 7% while vat has been sitting on 15% and that is on top of the income tax we already pay.

Mr. Letang needs to finally let all that hot air he have go into a balloon so he can fly and coordinate properly so that an amicable solution can be found because let’s face it, The main thing is the money anyway…

  25. Hard working Civil Servant
    September 23, 2010

My fellow Dominicans. Supporters and non-Supporters of the DLP GOVT. Let us dissect the statements we have in front of us. LET US BE OPEN-MINDED AND OBJECTIVE. The Public service Union (PSU) said that Government has refused to honor some sections of a provisional agreement for public servants. That agreement has to do with non-salary issues. That means that the DLP GOVT., during the negotiations, agreed on somethings regarding non- salary issues and they told the PSU face to face they would do. THE PSU RELAYED THE MESSAGE TO ITS MEMBERSHIP. THE PSU AND ITS MEMBERS TRUSTED GOVT. The statement, ‘THEY (PSU) RECEIVED THE NOD FOR,’ MEANS JUST THAT. GOVT AGREED TO THE NON_SALARY ISSUES. BUT THE PSU VEX LIKE HELL, FEELING THAT IT HAS NOW BEEN TRICKED, BETRAYED, BAMBOZOOLED, STABBED IN THE BACK. THE PSU THREATENS THAT IT WOULD ACCEPT NOTHING LESS THAN WHAT WAS AGREED TO BY GOVT. Is that how a GOVT. of the people treats its workers? Didn’t that same DLP GOVT. take a 50% increase in salary which the taxpayers have to foot every month? There was no problem then. They just took it. Whether you, my people, who are the GOVT. employers, the Dominican people, the taxpayers, agreed or not, the DLP GOVT. just took the 50% increase. Has the public Servants brought that unto themselves? Have they been fooled or allowed themselves to be fooled? The PSU is made up of a section of intelligent workers in Dominica, some might think.

BUT NOTE WELL DOMINICANS OF ALL PERSUASIONS:
“The three signs of a hypocrite are: lying, betraying trust and going back on his word (not fulfilling a promise).” Therefore hypocrites are liars, because they lie to themselves.
For people with evil intentions lying is an open door for them to reach their selfish goals by concealing the facts behind their magical words and capturing innocent people with their poisonous lies.
Liars have no time for them to think or reflect. They rarely consider the possible conclusions, claiming that ‘no one will ever discover their secrets’. In their words we find many mistakes and contradictions. Liars will eternally become covered with shame, failure and disgrace. Therefore, it is true to say that ‘liars have bad memories. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
