Airport staff gets warning from PM

Skerrit

Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit has issued a stern warning to the Melville Hall airport staff as it relates to their work ethics and has threatened to terminate the employment of those who do not adhere.

Last night, in a ceremony to mark the inaugural flight of night landing services at the airport, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told the employees that tardiness was one of the issues to be addressed.

“We have to work on our work ethic. We have to change it, we have to improve on it. We have to give more to our employers. We cannot come to work at nine o’ clock when you ought to be here at seven,” he said

“We have to address those things cause I have come here in the past and the entire airport is closed because the staff comes in late. We cannot allow that and if it means that we have to change the employment status of those of you who work at the airport then let us look at doing that, because we really have to ensure that this ceremony tonight can be one of many opportunities we have for this country,” he stated.

    @john bess:

Why don’t you live where you are and come home and do a better job. Leave my PM alone and leave the other people country for them and come and develope yours.

  2. September 26, 2010

MR Pm many of us are very hard workers, we are dedicated to our work for the development of our country. However most times we are harrased by some suppervisors who themselves have no work ethics.we are oppressed in so many ways,we work for years without appointment, are threatened when request are made for uniform allowances and forced to work in unsafe condition.
There is a need for an investigation into many of these employment instution.
Namely- Police Force, Hospital Administration,Social security, public works, D.A.S.P.A and many others if an investigation is carried out peoples attitude towards work will improve.

unprofessional, i my opinion the pm shouldn’t have discussed those issues publicly. There is a thing called the chain of command and he’s at the top. So that being said i’m pretty certain that this could have been discussed in a more appropriate setting with whoever oversees the airport. We are so behind as a country in a day i when something so great has been achieved that statement killed the vibes.

    September 22, 2010

I agree with the PM. There are way too many people (especially in the Gov’t service) taking their jobs for granted, coming to work late, always calling in sick, taking 2 hour lunch breaks, and giving bad attitudes to customers. It’s time we get serious about our jobs.

  21. September 22, 2010

@Devoted Dominican.: Hi this is unacceptable and we must all start conducuing ourselves more responsibly. These insults are not acceptable. We have youth reading our comments and I blame DNO for allowiong these insults to be read. Yes we have freedom of speech but these staements we print against each other is sick. We can tell someone we disagree and not be so slack. If DNO continues to allow these comments to get on then DNO will pay the price in DNO’s Financial statements. I will persoanlly lead a campaign to get sponsors of this site to withdraw. This is not what we are suppoed to be doing in this forum. Is this who we are I doubt it. I am so sad today. Such terms, such hate, such insulting language. That’s difinitely not who we are. Peace.

    FROM MERRICK ANDREWS to MAESTRO
I encourage you now begin to have advertisers withdraw their sponsorship on this site. Maestro, you know me personally; our daughters go to the same daycare by the parents of daughter’s mother. You used to hail me every morning. I find this very vindictive and low. How lower can you be? No wonder the villagers continue to despise you. Do you think it’s that easy to just get up and ask people to stop supporting a business that is helping me to put food on my family’s table and pay hardworking Dominicans? I thought you were a decent person, but now I see you’re not. Let people freely express themselves. Mr. Jno Baptiste stop trying to play Jesus and Mr. Perfect and go do your job, ok, and leave us to do ours. I am waiting on the personal campaign because we will personally set out to do ours.

@DominicaFirst: I guess you are a widely travelled individual so I will deal with your issue by asking you a simple question. Can you take a picture at JFK??? NO! For the same reasons you are not allowed to do so in Dominica. Stop crying down my country just because we are meeting the conditions set down by the FAA and other International authorities. YOU CANNOT TAKE PHOTOS AT AIRPORTS AND THATS THAT! AND YOU KNOW WHY. AN AIRLINE CANNOT SHOW MOVIES WITH SCENES SHOWING PLANE CRASH. That is harsh, mate. Man, oh man. Although I did not agree with Valda, I would never go this far. She is a human being like everyone else. We can disagree without sticking a dagger in someone’s heart.

Think about it: Every person’s opinion on DNO is valuable – whether we vehemently disagree or not. If everyone stops posting, because they think that they are going to get brutalized with such harsh criticism, then there would be very few postings, and we would not have a forum to let our minds go free. Let us have a good/healthy debate without being so brutal. Whoa!!!

If it was uwp that bring night landing d/ca would be too small for all u n all u cocoy talk. but cos is labour ahhh it not good, so our prickle must be up when is negative talk alone that coming from Marigot. Stop looking at colours n look at the progress. you almost contradicting yourself by saying indirectly that Eddison was giving u money for your business. and your business will make money if u spend money. Several times in the airport hungry is coshoni all u selling. Food that not even fit for my dog to eat so hush up n take a class to learn how to cook n make bebel ppl will actually want to buy for souvenirs.

    September 22, 2010

    @Valda Bruno – Durand:

    Valda,

You are partly correct, because the same message needs to be relayed to differenct sectors – both private and public. You need to look at what the PM said from a wider perspective, however. Although I do not support the PM on everything he says and does, I must agree that in this instance, his “words” resonate with me. Of course, the way it was handled is of another flavor. This is something that should have been handled behind closed door; and should have come from the employees’ immediate supervisor. Right message from the wrong person, in the wrong forum.

You cannot deny that if we are going to carve a larger piece of the tertiary sector in order to augment our GDP, efficient customer service is crucial.

With all due respect, you need to stop being partial on many of your postings, and start looking at the forest from the trees. Stand back and look at the big picture. Everything does not have to resolve around your political affiliation.

Do you remember what happened not too long ago at the ports in DA – when Express Des iles passengers could not disembark? I do not remember all the details, but I am sure you recall.

The problem the PM talked about is endemic in DA, and you know it.

  35. September 22, 2010

WE HEAR COMPLAINTS ALL THE TIME ABOUT THE ATTITUDE OF GOVERNMENT WORKERS,ALL OF THEM CAN BE SUBSTANTIATED,BUT BECAUSE IT COMES FROM THE PM THE HATERS WANT TO COME DOWN ON HIM. PM GO AHEAD AND DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO.YOU WERE GIVEN THE MANDATE “JUST DO IT”.BY THE WAY CONGRATS ARE IN ORDER FOR THE PROGRESS TO NIGHT LANDING.

    September 22, 2010

    @Vee:

Here is one and so far only time of expriencing exactly what the PM is talking about.

It was back in 86 or 88 my UK flight was late in arriving at Antigua (though my LIAT was still on ground) I was forced to overnight (BA paid for my accommodation).

Next day, we are put on the first LIAT flight into Melville Hall (landed around 6am).

Rather than be directed to Arrivals, a female worker directed us to the Departure Lounge instead.

Because, there were no Immigration Officers at the Melville Hall when the flight landed.

So after travelling for what was now 2 days, to get to Dominica and having to wait a further 30 minutes, becuase of the lazy ass Immigration Officer could be bother to be at thier post on time, really grated that day.

So PM, if Airport has to remain closed because of lazy ass workers, then sack them.

After all there is high unemployment in Dominica, so people would be lining up to fill the vacancy.

  37. Anonymous
    September 22, 2010

    @Vee:

Here is my one experience of just what the PM sis saying.

This was a while ago now, either 86 or 88 and it was the first flght for the day (I was forced to overnight in Antigua the previous day).

LIAT landed at Melville Hall at around 6am and rather than go to Arrivals, we were all put in the Departure lounge, because there was no Immigration Officer to check our passport.

About 30 minutes later a Immigration Officer turned up and we all allowed to enter Arrivals (In those days the Melville Hall Terminal was a disgrace of a building).

So if the PM is mentioning that today (2010) then that problem still exists and those persons should be sacked.

I wonder why politics have to always be an issue in everything that is being said. Dominicans really need to get over this politics BS and think beyond that. The airport is already closing after a certain time so why can’t it be opened when it should be? Why is that a problem? If you’re not getting paid enough for the amount of work that you’re doing get another job. Time is time and you people really need to take heed of that. It’s time for all these excuses to STOP!!!! one thing the man say all u bringing up all other stuff. Why would he bring up what’s happening in any other place in Dominica in an airport opening?

The PM is right; twice I went to the airport and met the doors closed when we expected to fly at 7:00am. The doors were still closed at 6:00.
I believe it does not matter what you think of the PM, dominicans should have more respect for him whether you believe in what he says or not; let him make his mistakes and let God judge him but don’t go bashing him because you are not making it better. Remember that we are all human and one day you will expect someone to respect you when you get in a higher position. The PM is so right , and another thing he should stress out on is how those employees treat the public. Some of them act like a bunch of savages and no-one should ask them any questions. Not only at the airport but the entire country

I hope the same applies to the people at financial centre and the other government offices.

  79. September 21, 2010

The PM is rite in addressing the issue of customer service to the employees of the airport..We have a big problem with customer service in DA, not just at the airport but in stores, supermarkets, salons ets..The airport or seaport is the 1st place a stranger goes through to enter a country, and watever impression the stranger gets at the airport will affects the way the person percieve the entire country.. We as Dominicans need to learn to greet people in a friendly manner..Most times u enter a store in DA, the workers don’t even greet u.. They watch u up and down and not one smile on their face..(a smile says hello) The restaurants are even worse..Seriously employers should make sure that their staff treats people with respect, and those who do not adhere to it will suffer the consequences..
I am living abroad and whenever u enter a store or restaurant the people greet u, they make u feel welcomed..Sometimes u donot even want to buy anything in the store but bcuz of the treatment and the friendliness of the staff u are forced to purchase something …

Valda Bruno-Durand says it best! I love to read Valda’s comments. They are so true, so honest. I
ove this woman! The PM damn well know which tree to climb. Yes the row-row that takes place right in his presence on government time is what he needs to threaten people about, and yes all the big boys that walk in late to appointed, handed positions and have a few people getting sick from over work is what he needs to threaten about. The PM is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a big hypocrite, the thing is the sheep’s clothing is coming off! Marigot people should stone his ass, he too damn fast, and up. He knows nothing about work ethic, just using words maybe Hartley or Tony put together. Night landing my ass, we all know American will not come, so a waste of money and time there. And basically this was all a show, we all know is a BIG SALT POND that is a Melville Hall. what a kind of job at whose expense. the same tardy workers who cannot get a descent pay. Marigot, do not patronize me. I love Marigot people and your negativity towards development will not change my feelings. But, you need to stop with this politics because I know for a fact that you are among a few who still sees everything in black and white. It is time that you listen to the message and ignore the messenger.

It is high time that we take this beautiful Island of ours forward and live in unity. There are many benefits from this night landing, but we must also remember that we need to change the way we operate and conduct business. This will create a new business environment for the people in the airport district. There will be the need for accommodation for individuals in transit—eating, sleeping, recreation etc. Start thinking in that direction and make a way to capitalize on this opportunity before some foreign investors make a run for it. Just think about some of the Islands in the region—St. Lucia as an example, Sandals Hotel.

The Prime Minister’s comments on Work Ethics in the work place are critical. On this note we need to recognize that Dominica must develop a new and progressive work culture/ethic and this must be based on improved productivity and customer service standards. By way of productivity we also need to recognize the need for time management, grooming, decorum, and we must be results oriented. That being said, we must not use our good office in any selfish manner to take advantage of those we believe might be volnerable…I do not believe that the Prime Minister did this but I am aware of some persons who are known to use their office to attempt to marginalise people in the work place.

I welcome the Prime Minister’s observations and wish to echo the Prime Minister’s call for improved performance in the workplace. I also call on the Prime Minister to mandate the Personnel, Establsihment and Training Departments and the Public Sector Reform Management Unit to increase their education of Public Sector workers and to increase the awareness of these public workers to increase their capacity to respond adequately and as required beyond the call of duty if Dominica’s public service is to become the type of professional and competitiveentity we all want to see and hope that the local private sector and regional public workers will want to emulate

Let’s face it folks, work ethics and work attitude on this piece of rock call home is a far cry from what we all know is better. To spend time being critical of the PM for the statement he made is not doing justice to our country. We cannot progress unless we accept that we are behind! Similarly, we cannot improve on our work attitude until such time we accept that the attitude is seriously lacking. But before jumping to prescribe cures, we need to know what causes our attitude to be what it is.
I had the privilege of reading the work of the late Professor Carl Stone of Jamaica who was commissioned to study the work attitude of Jamaicans. His conclusions could well apply to Dominica. He observed that Jamaicans work their butts out in the metropolis of our northern neighbours without complaining. He also observed that when people can realize their dreams in an economy, thy are happier and more incline to work. The Professor found that Jamaicans will grab opportunities when they become available but, in the absence of opportunities, they become restless and turn their energies to mischief. Does this sound like Dominicans too?
Here’s what I have observed in my many years as an HR academic and practitioner:
A Dominican can remain voluntary unemployed and still live a reasonable standard of living! Why? Because he has an aunt here and an uncle there and a sister overseas who will ensure he does not starve. But when places in a metropolis, he has no choice but to work in order to eat. So this Eden of ours also has a disadvantage.
    Think on those words!

The PM is sport on with his advice. Too often you find public servants just going about like there is no purpose to their existence. While there are some model employees in the service those political appointees are to be weeded out. I guess the PM should start by examining all those his administration just fitted in positions. Trust me he know what he talking about, but again he received 18 – 3 right? Well on his way to the next level whatever that may be.

There are many, especially students who come back to Dominica with degrees and cannot get jobs in this country. Well said Mr.Prime Minister! This was my experience two years ago when I returned home on vacation. I was in the departure line which was extremely long, when two of the counter clerks got into a verbal agrument. One stormed off and only one attendant was left to help customers. I was so embarassed because I went to the same High School with one of the girls. I agree, if they do not want to abide to the new work ethics, replace them!

  111. DOMINICA'S PROPERITY
    September 21, 2010

Yes in deed and it has been a long time coming but I know change will come or yes it will for Dominica’s advancement and world standing.

Just because we are a small Caribbean island that isn’t among the richest in money terms, doesn’t mean that we must do things with no style and conviction, as it reflects on the individuals, all the other citizens of the country and “bad habits” or “bad practice” in the hospitality industry is nothing to be complacent or proud about.

  112. DOMINICA'S PROPERITY

Do grow up and stop talking nonesense, everyone has a choice to either be in a job and do it to the highest standard as possible or walk out the door and make room for someone who has a professional work ethic as opposed to a piss taker!

Great to see the authorities finally taking steps to deal with these individuals and I say the culprits should be severely disciplined for their actions.

DA’s professionalism and advancement comes paramount!

What is so difficult to comprehend as far as what was suggested? Of course the slackers need to be shown he door and held accountable for unconscientiousness in DA, as you all have gotten away with it for too long with no accountability.

Only an unwise individual would make such a negative comment on such an important issue that has affected the island’s prosperity in the tourism industry as well as other sectors for as long as I can remember and needs to change pronto.

How sad that every aspect of topical debate has to result in politics, as opposed to one opening their minds and attempting to advance for the good of the island.

@THA TRUTH: From your remarks I’m gonna go on a limb and say you are a supporter of the UWP.

Remember the Honorable Edison James spent his five years in office lamenting so many “Shirkers and Jerkers” within the public service. He was so frustrated that he suggested that Government(Cabinet) should be given the authority to fire civil servants.

The so called “Public Sector Reform” program started way back with Dame Eugenia. One of the main targets of that program was work ethics within the civil service, which saw the implementation(attempted) of performance appraisals. The whole objective was to effect a more efficient work culture within the civil service, where the prevailing notion was(is), one had a job for life.

Government owes no individual a job. Each individual must first qualify for to perform a job, and then perform in a stipulated manner that will cause him/her to keep that job.

I worked at Melville Hall(DOM). And I can say the PM is right on the money.

DOM is the gateway to Dominica. This is not a joke or something to play political football with. We all suffer as a country because of the care free and lackadaisical attitude of airport employees.

I have known instances when LIAT 361(06:40) from ANU was on the ground, and the airport staff(including Customs) have to be scrambling. According to Son of the Saint…”Sah Passa Work.”

You idiot. This happens to be one of the major problems that Dominica is facing. And that is unproductive people in the work place. When one accepts a job, that person also accepts the pay and responsibility that goes with that job at the salary which is offered to them at the acceptance of that job. Too many people tend to take their job’s for granted in Dominica, and by so doing that thought impeds upon their performance on the job. Then you know who suffers because of that? the customers. So i say to you, go and get yourself a responsible job and only then will you beable to comment on issues as job performance.

Despite of what the PM is into or what he may be doing he has a valid point. We need to remember that whether it is half a loaf of bread, it is better than nothing at all. In other place after three days of being late for work u get suspended or even fired. I am pretty sure that all year round some of you show up for work late everyday and this has probably gone on for years. Tourism is what will help boost the economy in our country and now is the perfect opportunity for us to do so. People be thankful for what you have and work hard to keeping it and improving it as well. Doors are being open for us but it is up to us if we are going step in or not. @rot: Why are u people so ignorant? Whenever a news organization cover an event with speeches they normally don’t cover an entire speech but look for snippets within the speech that is newsworthy. The editors of DNO thought the PM’s remarks on work ethics was newsworthy and they are very right because we suffer from a scourge of poor work ethics in Dominica.

My gosh, please think before posting. All you making the rest of the world think we Dominicans are a bunch of idiots.

while i do not know how much pay they get but I totally agree, once you are in a job no matter what do ur part. If you find that you’re not getting paid enough, go on some form of strike or so, but please dont come to work late all the time and when told about it then say u not getting paid enough. In 2007 I visited DA ans it took me 1 hr to get a ticket, when i did get to the counter the ladies were talking about the weekend, we need to represent Dominica better than that. Visitors will go back and talk to their friends about the treatment they receive. I know their are some dedicated workers at the airport and I must say , continue to good work , but there are some who just need to pull up their socks or give someone else a chance at teh job. Some of them are my friends so I know.

@THA TRUTH: It’s amazing when Dominicans go to anywhere around the world, they work their butts off, but in Dominica is come as you want and leave as you please. But some fools are equating this timely statement by the PM as what comes around goes around.

What is wrong with you UWP people?

Mr. PM. First time I don’t agree with a comment you made. Are you aware of the contracted work hours of the staff at the Airport? Do you know what time the different shifts starts? Are you aware it is more economical to let a worker come in at 9am when the first flight for Eagle is at 1pm? Why pay workers to come for 7am when you could save wages for an entire crew for 2 hours a day. Workers are used in shifts based on the volume of traffic. And we still underpay them. Hmmm. NEways, you really trying hard to motivate us to do hard work but give the blows where it is deserved.
