RESOLVED: Carib Territory playing field to start soon

Garnet Joseph is Carib Chief

By DNO Correspondent

A matter which led to a massive demonstration in the Carib Territory on Monday morning has been resolved.

Villagers protested against the delay on the construction of a playing field in Sinekou. According to reports, the people took their protest to Concord, where several trees are being cut down.

They claim that although $250,000 were made available by Government to the Carib Council, no work has started after several months.

“Government gave the Carib Council money to give us our playing field so long and maybe they drink the money because no playing field,” one angry protester told Dominica News Online via telephone.

No fault of Carib Council

But Carib Chief Garnet Joseph said the delay is not the Carib Council’s fault.

“We have had several delays that were not on our part. If it were left up to us, that playing field would have been started since October last year,” Joseph noted.

He said the ministry responsible informed the Carib Council through letter that they had to work with an engineer. The delay was also caused when residents whose land had to be used for the playing field consulted with lawyers on the matter.

“We had difficulties contracting someone so the work was passed on to the engineer that is attached to the Carib Territory. The design was presented to us, but more land was required for the playing field.  We spoke to the residents of the area, whose land was joined with the area designated to the playing field. They decided that they didn’t want to hand over the land until we used our powers. The owners of the land went to lawyers and that took some time; that slowed down the process,” he explained.

According to Joseph, while persons have the right to protest, it will not get the desired results that the protesters want because the matter is out of the Carib Council’s hands.

Joseph said up until last week, discussions were held in that regard with the engineers, but certain things must be put in place.

Unfortunate situation

However, after several hours of negotiations, a consensus was met and villagers were told to expect work to commence in two weeks.

Parliamentary Representative Ashton Graneau has described the situation as unfortunate.

“They were asking for two weeks duration, but we were asking for three weeks. Eventually we agreed that we would get something going in two weeks. We will get the contractors to agree on a time to start the work,” he added.

While the Carib Council was given the monies, they stumbled upon several hurdles, according to Graneau.

“It stemmed from land ownership to the plan having to be done again. I am just happy that matter was resolved,” he noted.

Enough of all the hate and political nonsense. The kalinago people have a right to protest against anything they believe is wrong or suspecious. It is quite obvious that the Carib Council failed its people but there is no need for us as a notion to add insult to injury by looking down on the very people (Kalinago) that the ancestors of the majority met in the land. SAHME, SHAME, SHAME on all those who keep looking down on the Kalinago people. One thing is certain, we met them there and we ought to respect that as a basic principle. STOP the hate and insult. We are but one people. Dominicans too like to give maypuis. We have gotten so divisive that we turn on our own for nothing. Shame!! My sincere apologies to the Kalinago people who have been insulted by the illiterate contributors to this forum.

I am appalled by some of the degrading and racist comments that DNO has allowed to be published.

Some time aback I posted a comment for an article on the New York Times website, in which made vague references to the Holocaust and slavery. My post was never published on the site and couple of hours later I got an e-mail from the New York Times (you have to register with a valid e-mail address in order to post comments) pointing out that my comments were inappropriate and I would be banned if I do other posts of that nature.

I think DNO has been too liberal in publishing comments. I think contributors should register first and comments should be filtered to avoid remarks that are degrading and racist in nature.

While I support the right of free speech, it does not give us a carte blanche to say whatever we want whenever we want. Rights has its limits.

We can have healthy and meaningful discourse without being racist or degrading.

blessings to all the foes of the Kalinago people, we the kalinago people are the true dominican roots and citizen. My fellow african descent are the enslaved or imported citizen. we the kalinago people for too long has been taking a back seat and let our destination be governed by central government putting their hand in everything we do. even with our local kalinago election is closely connected to central government. So now is the time when we the kalinago people walk with heads up and demand what we think we need and truely deserve. Infact everything that is given to the kalinago people they duely deserve it. Now is Pay back time. we the kalinago people have our doctors, masters studenet, lawyers, etc and we have a future ahead of us to govern our own political and social affaires. soon we will be going for reparation from the evils that has been done to us. we are hoping that sometimes this year the indiginous peoples of the Americas including the kalinago people will be getting to the so called religoius org. to pay for the many ills they cause us in the name of christianity. we are optimistis that we are getting there so some of African descent brother fight ur way to gt what is urs. If some of u want to go back to Africa please do urself a favor and go.

Point 1: those who say that the kaligao drink alcohol . yes it is true some drink alcohol but who do u see on the street on weeyk days gving the best of their character during the week like those of the African descent brother on the coast , the city and some other village on the country side?

2: how many time do you hear a kalinago killing another kalinago brother?

3: have u ever heard of kalinago slavery, 4: how many times have u heard the kalinago people be sold for lead, guns and a pound of coal? it is a pity that those who cast their remarks don’t reflect before they visualize their own history. It hurts to know that most of those who cast such negative comment about the original citizen of dominica are also trying their best to make all ends meet. find some things more interesting to comment on.

I was forced to write a comment .

By the way Charles williams would have done a better job a long time ago because he don’t put H2o in his mouth to dmand what we duely deserve.

    love

I think we need dialogue on racism in Dominica.

      April 13, 2010

Fact: the DLP government gave the Carib Council $250,000 to build their playing field. The Council is responsible for the construction of the field. They FAILED. Why? Because the Council did not negotiate properly with the kalinago land owners BEFORE approaching the government for funding.

This is a reflection of people wanting their independence to manage their own projects but being too incompetent and inexperienced to execute it. So they now running back to the government to “fix” their mess.

Kalinagoes need to hold their Carib Council responsible and accountable for their shortcomings. If they’re incompetent then replace them!!!

TO LEXUS: If you think it would be better for us to get into our boats and paddle up the river whence we came from, then YOU should take the first flight BACK TO AFRICA!!! Need I say more????

To those who recognize the Kalinago ppl as equal citizens, thanks to all of you but to those who think we are second class citizens, spoilt, lazy, uneducated and waiting on handouts, clearly you are not worthy of even speaking because your words come from the language of ignorance!!!

The stereotype “All Caribs are stupid” is not true. It will never be true. There are loads of educated individuals living both in and outside of the territory. Even some who are not formally educated, of course, have common sense. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves for all the derogatory remarks. Some of my people and myself do not need to publicize our resumes to prove our intelligence and educational qualifications. Bad talk us still – while you are “malpalaying” we are striving and achieving…. When you may be in your deepest pain, I may your Kalinago doctor; Your stinkiest crime… I may be your Kalingao lawyer….

Look around and see that the same or similar problems which plague the youth of Dominica also plague those in the Carib Territory. It is blatant ignorance to label our young Kalinago women as incestuous; this too is a misconception and the C.T. is not the only place in DA to have had such cases however it is not rampant as believed. Other young women in DA have kids out of wedlock so our girls are not “just having kids with many daddies.” A lot of young women outside of our tribe are in the same boat. As a matter of fact, you may find that some of our girls may have kids at a young age but for the same man!!! Maybe you and those who know yourselves should claim responsibility for the kids you may not have claimed. You too are a baby daddy. I just hope these babies are not being carried by my Kalinago girls….

WE DOMINICANS ARE JUST POOR PEOPLE TRYING TO GET A PIECE OF WHAT HAS BEEN PROMISED. WHERE DID THIS SOCIAL CLASS STANDARD COME FROM? YOU ALL NEED TO STOP. IF YOU BREATH, I CATCH YOUR COLD…289.5 sq miles.

Are you kidding me? Why are we degrading the democratic right of our fellow citizens?

I think it would be prudent if many of you (those spewing venomous cow dung) go back to the history books to review the political and socio-economic disenfranchisement of the citizens in the Kalinago territory.

Are we thinking that we are in a different socio-economic class than they are? They are not second-class citizens. It is within their constitutional right to exercise their fundamental rights as citizens (Constitution: Act 22, of 1984). Please READ YOUR constitution as it pertains to freedom of expression. In my opinion if the money was given to construct the playing field, tht is exactly what it should be used for!The youths of Carib Territory deserve and need the field, so for all the NEGROS who are writing comments to indicate tht the CARIBS are at fault for protesting to get what was promised to them, you need to get past the slavery mentality and speak for development in you all communities. Stop bowing your heads like u all did while the PLANTATION MASTERS whipped your asses.

  20. concerned Dominican
    April 12, 2010

It is indeed sad that our Dominican people cannot recognize democracy when they see it. A protest was in order and I support it, it is a healthy way to express our right to stand up for what we want and our displeasures.
A playing field is indeed necessary and can be an asset to any community, the only problem in this situation is a lack of communication between the people and the persons responsible for the project.

The fact that other people are against and discriminate against the kalinago people are truly ignorant and unpatriotic. We should be honored that we still have Kalinago people with us but we take it for granted.
On another note if more protests and demands were made in Dominica maybe more action would be seen rather than “waiting and see” concept which many Dominicans practice. So ignorant of the fact they actually deserve better; we want development and thats what we aim for. Kudos to the individuals who saw it fit to express their freedom and democratic right in order to see change.
Too many Dominicans are afraid of authority, the leaders are there to serve us and not the other way around; we vote for them to represent us and our best interest and thats what they are obligated to do.

To those who commented recklessly and not see the real issue at hand ; they should properly assess it before giving their opinion and avoid making themselves look like fools. keep in mind the international community reads these comments and news. Displaying your ignorance on an international stage is not a good look for Dominica.

(please write proper English or something close to it so other people can understand, don’t give others the impression that all Dominicans are as dumb )

  21. KALINAGO TO DE BONE
    April 12, 2010

It’s nice to know that the issue has been resolved for the time being and i hope it’s not just another empty promise. For too long the kalinago people have been pressed and oppressed by their leaders and so called fellow Dominicans. We have for too long been taken on a joy ride of empty promises, back biting, stereotyping among others, it’s time a stance be taken for what we want and what we believe. I’ve read some of the comments of some ignorant, garbage minded Dominicans which am 100% sure are not kalinagoes and am ashame to know that these are the very same who call us stupid. If stupidity was to be measured by how we think, talk or act then i believe the majority of Kalinago haterz are stupid. The kalinagoes a within their rights to stand up for what was promised and i think more stance should be taken to get what we truly deserved.
While as kalinagoes we must fight for what is promise and what is rightfully ours we must also be careful on not being too dependent on those political dectorates. We know for a fact that they thrive on our weakness to their advantages. These political jockeys will only ride the backs of the weak to obtain power while promising or handing out a few goodies which in most cases are ours in anyway. They know the plight of the kalinago people and smile when such incidents happen becuase they know that here goes an opportunity to get some cheap votes.
Resassured in the years to come we will elevate the ladder of succes as many of our young kalinagoes will be returning home from universties around the world and will be making meaninfull contribution to the kalinago comunity. I believe some of the hatred stems from envy and jealousy becuase we are different. Only in Dominca such happens becuase out there we are treated with respect and admiration. It’s sad to know that the very same who try to bring us down came from worst off struggles than us. Let them not forget in their very struggle for freedom we fought and shed blood to see them free and today they want to turn their back on us in our own struggles. Kalinagoes lets continue the struggle stand up for what we want and never give up.

I just want to talk about some issues there. The problems of this particular community have been created by many factors. First of all its the poorest area in the reserve and possible in Dominica. Poverty does show its ugly head with its many products. This community has been marginalized and neglected for many years by successive governments and councils. I took a walk there after the incident this place needs serious help. Can our governments really provide it? Its difficult the government has to focus on Balancing equity and efficiency they are quite the opposite. Many may say that they are getting special attention but after so many years of neglect now they are getting that attention. Is that going to solve the problem? According to Lewis Oscar based on the Mexican on a study of Mexico and Puerto Rico, he says that even if we address the problem of poverty the problems or products associated will not be eradicated it has become culture. From an economic perspective this type of assistance is geared only at creating dependence it does not target the chore issues. We should study economics to have a better perspective. With this it is sorry to see that these people are so hopeless that they can’t even think for themselves. Before we really make judgements about any issues its important to take a walk take a careful look gather the facts then we can make those comments that will be meaningful. Dr Martin Luther king had to go through this same kind of abuse and he did stand and fight for the cause and is one of the greatest man in history. The people there have a strong feelings of hopelessness, dependence, inability to defer gratification and the list goes on. it will take wise leaders and a wise people to see through these lines to make our Dominica a beautiful Paradise.

Many people who are posting here seems to be ignorant of the fact. The playing field in question has been promised for years, money has been allocated and yet it has not been built. What the people are asking is, where is the money?

This has more to do than just building a playing field. It has to do with holding our leaders accountable and delivering on their promises. If blocking the road is one way of getting the attention of our leaders, I am all for it.
…While we all have a right to express ourselves, rights come with responsibilities and we cannot simply say whatever we want at the expense of other people.

we have the right to self governance and self determination, and contrlo our land territories and resources. with the help of government we have our right to self sustainability and development etc

just want to end here by saying that our kalinago ancestor has been spilt all over Dominica and until we are fairly treat in the eye of man and jah there is no way the country is going to move forward peacefully. and for some of the african descent who criticise ur days will come. count ur blessing while u have them. the worl is still evolving for u the days of slavery is not over. finally just want to tell those who criticise not every black person is ur brother and not every white person is ur enemy

My ancestors died for this country. Their blood is mingled with the soil. They took on the superpowers of the day with bows and arrows and wooden spears. We were never enslaved and forced to work to enrich the man in the house on the hill.

If we are given small preferential treatment we deserve it because of the sacrifices our forefather. What is given us today pales in comparison to how other countries treat their indigenous peoples.

You know what, after reading these comments as a Kalinago i realized that it aint only our people who can be regarded as ignorant, its some of the rel asses of Dominica, those whose lifestyles are no better, who scrabble for the next dollar to make ends meet and who live in the retches of the ghetto who usually comes up with reasonings such as those. no doubt these are the remarks which usually flow from the small minded pigs of the the nature isle. Those up the ranks of society are usually more sensible…hmmm no doubt.

Either ways, seriously when u’all speak of the Carib Territory which u only hear about, and not up to grass root levels terms with, it’s ignorance to generalize because the community is made up of various small hamlets which each contain their own distinct characteristics, it wasn’t Salybia folks nor Crayfish River or Bataca folks which would partake in such ridiculous activities.

Definitely people have a right to protest when they feel that they have been treated unfairly but seriously, umm we have much more serious issues that we need to undertake as a people rather than squander over something which does not bring any needed change.

And yes i get some of u’all, it’s high time that some Kalinagoes change this stereotype bullshit about ”all caribs being stupid” because i most definitely do not fall into that bracket and if a quarter of the Kalinago community who wants to spoil the reputation of others then so be it…but no wonder most of the good ones are leaving and so completely disassociate themselves with the reserve and its development

this happens everywhere but simply because we are a minority and completely unique from the rest in the sense that every move made is highlighted, doesn’t give the rest of the Dominican population to suggest that its all Kalinagoes involved in this crap…some just prefer to keep their comments, avoid a media coverage or plainly disassociate themselves with insignificant issues

And besides, the playing field was an idea issued to the village of Sinekou which has a high youth population, a lot at high and primary school students no socialization facilities and only a shrub filled flat land which is no longer accessibly. Its a splendid idea since many of those youths are involved in cricket, volleyball and football, even at the village level yet because of their lack of a good playing field has to travel all the way to the other end of the reserve some 20miles to get the the other park which is the Jolly Johns park to continue what they love.

Get the facts b4 u’all let ur tongues loose u religious…christian -like people of Dominica who sooo very easily criticize vice yet find it just as easily to keep your people down with vast criticisms such as what i’ve read…yet every Sunday in the eyes of God You’all pray for peace, unity and being each other’s keeper…shucks there must be b a flaw somewhere in our entrenched beliefs as a Christian state.

There are so many other false promises made to the Carib people including that of housing and better sanitation still undelivered and I never heard them Caribs protest for that. Dominicans black, white, chinese and indians need to do better than that.

As a Kalinago, though I am not from Senecou, I fullyb support the move. For those of you who do not live in the Territory, you may want to believe that everything you all hear on the media is the gospel truth. Far from that!
Part of the problem is Governments irresponsible actions of just making empty promises to people and failing to deliver. If the government do not give the Carib Council adequate funds to develop the facility, where is the money expectected to come from? The Coucil failed because they have been afraid of expoising the Government!

The Kalinago People have been used enough by politicians and fake leaders who proffess to be their God sent saviour. They should approach the housing project melay with the same force.

If they are given the money that Chavez sent FOR THEM, they would be in a far better position to address these concerns.

Caribs must convince people that the saying that “all caribs are stupid” is a misconception. Right now they are proving the statement to be so very true. This protest today is utter nonsense and the persons involved should be arrested…you blocking roads and shutting down transportation over a playing field to be constructed!!!!!!!!!!!???????? This is ludacrist! Only in Dominica these things will happen.

A playing field is NOT a need or an emergency! What about all the villages around Dominica with no playing field or any other such facility?! (e.g. my village Petite Savanne) If they all protested for such a silly reason what would happen to Dominica? At least they lucky the funds have already been secured.

Caribs are too idle because of all the preferential treatment they getting so they looking for something to do with their time…Caribs have a special ministry of government, access to free land, special quota for housing, special quota for scholarships to study abroad etc.; while all the rest of us in the country have to work hard for everything. What makes those caribs more special than the rest of us????!!!

LET THE CARIBS OPERATE LIKE ALL OTHER PERSONS IN THE COUNTRY TO GIVE THEM A WAKE UP CALL!!!!! Is our government that spoiling those Caribs. Now they behaving like overindulged children who want a big red lollipop now!

Most, if not all countries, always give their indigenous people some level of special treatment simply because they were the first to inhabit the land and they had always been around. They were not imported or had not migrated their after it had been inhabited.

Why do you think in the US American Indians are given special reservations with perks, including tax and many other exemptions? Some of these exemptions are given even if they don’t live on the reservation.

it is a way of honoring the first settlers of the country.

I thought the Carib Territory was public land. It is my understanding that the lands in the Carib Territory are not registered in any individual name so how can the people say that they are not giving up their land and even consult lawyers?

The Government and the Carib Council should have the right to acquire the land and just compensate the people for their crops because the lands are to be acqquired for public and communityuse. They people are holding back the progress of the field by resisting the delivery of the land and they are trying to put the blame on the Carib Council and Government.

The Ministry responsible for lands including the Lands and Survey Department, the Ministry of Sports , the Minister responsible for Carib Affairs and the Carib Council must all work together to see the commencement and completion of this much needed project for the Carib Territory.

Those are my thoughts too. We talk about empowement. Thats what empowerment is

Government gave the council money to do a project in the territory. I take is Caribs should be happy to create some jobs and do their own stuff. They blocking road and protesting because one of their own dont want to give up piece of their property. Does the said owner have a certificate of title?

This makes no sense and has nothing to do with Government. Government promised money for a project, the money was given. all else has to do with the Carib Council and the people who live there. The money is on your hands the ball is in your court. If you do not want to project let the Government know, I am sure another part of the country would want this project.

Any sensible person will see that this is not the Government or the Carib Council’s fault.
People dont want to give up free land, niether they want the contractors to cut the trees to build the stadium, they as the protesting commitee should go to those people and emand they give up the land to allow the council to build the stadium. Thats a foolish blind protest, they should have done their homework first and resolve with the council before taking it to the streets.

Hope dey will get what they want after this protest & it doesn’t end up like the 1 in Layou where after they protest they still lose cuz the asphalt plant is still going to be built there… I guess that is all part of “the next level”

And what does ‘the next level” has to do with this? Why do you all always have to bring politics into everything? it is a failure of the Carib Council to deal with this matter efficiently. They have to get their act together. And we are going to make sure they get their act together and govern us properly

If you have nothing to say, stay out of our affairs.

In a case like this, I think the Carib Chief and his council should have informed the people on the status of the playing field and all the “hold ups” they are experiencing.

This lack of communication has always been a problem in the Carib Territory. The Carib Council has always been doing things and keeping the people in the dark. I think the Carib Council should hold regular “town hall” type meetings with the people, informing and updating them on the status of different projects in the area and giving them information of all up coming projects.

I blame all this on the lack of communication.
