BREAKING NEWS: Kurt De Freitas withdrawn from post of DPP

De Freitas
De Freitas

Kurt De Freitas will no longer be Dominica’s Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Attorney General, Levi Peter, announced moments ago that De Freitas, a Guyanese national, was withdrawn from the job.

He was expected to take up duties in late October or early November.

Peter said the reason for the withdrawal was  because of mischievous statements by bloggers and others who know nothing about De Freitas.

Concerns were raised that De Freitas was over 65, the maximum age for the position of DPP as required by the Constitution.

More on this story later.

this is sad, age is a number, if his experience and knowledge qualified him he should have gotten the position. sad that he was such a wimp to withdraw.

Kurt has done the right and proper thing, he knows if he accepted the position he would be shrouded in controversy, considering he knows that he has past the age to hold the position. I mean if judge Cenac, stood down when the time came because of his age, why should Kurt be employed in our civil service, by contract, or be he a established civil cervant.

Kurt is a much older man than Cenac, I know Cenac, very well, our friendship dates back to the 1970’s when he was a member of the judiciary of Antigua. I also had the privilege of meeting Denis Roberts, also a Guyanes, he was Clerk of the High Court, while our Dr. Joseph Liverpool was judge of the high court in Antigua.

Roberts, Cenac, the late James Harris, and two other Cenac’s we associated in a circle, so I do have an Idea how old this man Kurt is, and if certain age is the criteria to fill the position, his age has disqualify him.

Believe you me, both Denis, and Cenac, are much younger men than Kurt!

Kurt should be retired a very long time ago, if Cenac can be in retirement, Kurt should not even be thinking of working right now!

tHEY asked miss Evalina Baptiste’ the highly qualified , fully experienced and multi-degreed Chief magistrate to take up the job. Then suddenly in a major turn around they asked of her to apply for the job and she did. She was subsequently interviewed but alas they could not get their way. She lectured those ” manipulators” that such a Position of the DPP is a creature of the Constitution and must remain to be independent from the influence of the cabinet/legislature. OUUUUUUCH they could not stand that truth and seek for an over-aged Non National and look at whaaaaaaaaat we have. Miss Baptiste acted in that position with distinction. Her knowledge of the law is unparalleled. When are we going to learn. THis is not politics. The region is laughing at us. shame! shame ! shame!

I challenge Levi Peter to make this letter from Mr. de Freitus public in hard copy. It may have come from him and it may not. I am saying this because it does not sound like the style and tone of communication from Kurt de Freitas OBE, QC for those who are familiar with his work.

DNO di you post any blog that sort to assassinate the man’s character? I people say that I am older too old for the job of DPP I would not take that as an assassination of character.
What is interesting is that in all the rambling about character assassination neither Levi nor Defrietas in what is suppose to be his letter have dealt with the age issue. Very curious.

Does that letter from Defrietas citing his reason as negative comments from bloggers really exist? or is Levi and the government under Skerritt trying to cover their mistakes and hide behind the curtain of irresponsible preparation and lack of following procedure.

Dominica has never seen such foolishness in government not even in the days when those in authority had no degrees.

As far as I know the bloggers commented on Defrietas’ age and people spoke about the information that was reported about past stints. the report about his legal battles is also reported on line. Anybody who aspire to the post of DPP got to have mental fortitudee and Defrietas had been a DPP for many years.
Levi do you realize that Defrieatas was AG with a regime that was loaded with scandal from public theft, rape , money laundering and much more and would you know that Mr Defrietas sat in his chair during the tumultous times in the Cayman Islands. Theman is not a softy as you profess Mr levi Peter.
But it is funnt though that Levi seem to be suggesting that he and his administration are listening to the people’s complain; Well sir in the midst of the people’s complain the people cried foul when for some reason or another Miss Baptist was by passed. The people also cried foul because of the treatment given to Clement Joseph – Did you Mr Levi and your cabinet collegues listen?

That comment is quite unfair. I have known Mr. DeFreitas for the past 30 years. He is an honest, decent and very fair individual. Nobody can honestly say otherwise. Dominica has lost the opportunity to have an excellent, experienced D.P.P. who would have ensured fairness for all Dominicans.

Well, the constitution states that the DPP has to be 65 years or younger. The opposing voices had nothing to do with his alleged ‘withdrawal’. There seems to be no vetting process by this administration, when it comes to the nomination of an individual to a position supported by the supreme law of the land.

No wonder “NO law no constitution can stop them from doing what they want.” Question, Is this what the law abiding Dominicans really voted for? My God! Where are the Christians, the educated people who are part and parcel of this land? Why are they silent about this atrocious disregard to our constitution?

With all the lies, contradictions and propaganda that are disseminated on the radio by the administration’s operatives, don’t they know by now that the truths will always trump the lies?

Only in our beloved Dominica this can happen. It is high time to vote these people out of office, and get them packing. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Why is you people are just based on the man’s age. It’s just like what you all did to Ms. Knight. But time will tell for all of you who thinks that Dominica should never get anything of “Quality” Standard. Ms. Knight was a very good person for the Presidential position. But know, you all had to put the lady’s life and that of her family “In Fair Of Danger”, and for what, because you all won’t be able to have it your way; POLITICALLY especially? Dominicans, wake up and see what the Opposition is doing to our beloved Dominica, just because they WANT POWER. Remember Edison’s statement; “I’M INCHARGE”?

a Real Dominican? awah you can’t be. Real Dominicans inform themselves on the rule of law and don’t blog on issues that surpass their level of understanding. If Pestina who was willing to serve and a natural born Dominican followed the Constitutional requirements and resigned because he had reached the age of service, how then can this man be allowed to serve? Politics have some of you dizzy and desperate. By the way like so many others have said, ignore DNO and just google him: in the search box type in his name and see what comes up, then tell me if it’s Dominicans that have done anything to him. It’s very telling on the character of some of you, who will do anything to get a leg up in life. Carry on

But I have to agree with the man. How will his decisions ever be seen as ‘good’ or ‘fair’ when there is already a scandal attached to his name.

When Dominicans learn that the negative we spew will hurt us, it will be too late. Not everybody takes kindly to having their names scandalized, something which we in DOminica seem to enjoy. We like the ‘beff’ ‘ scandal’ ‘ bobol’ and we like to point fingers, BUT not everyone will take kindly to these things. It seems everything that has to be done in Dominica must result in a scandal. Well i agree with you Sir. Just my two cents

Sorry you are so mislead! he is not causing havoc nor is becoming a concerning factor. He is by all proper analysis a nuisance, a troublemaker and a rogue. His acts of castigating, xenophobia and character assignation is meant to appeal to a few weak minded and selfish individuals who would rather see Dominica collapse like ancient Rome rather than support progressive development. People of high acclaim must find extreme difficulty in coming to this beautiful island and make a meaningful contribution to its development. The irony of all these events is that these obtuse minded people who blindly support the workers party like blessings and company lack the integrity, intelligence, wisdom, education and foresight to realise that lennox can only sink Dominica further and will not in anyway cause its improvement because he lacks not only the capacity but most importantly the humility to be fair leader for all of his people.

There is NO justification for this sort of behaviour on the part of our leaders and this is nothing short of absolute corruption in high office!! Ask yourselves WHY??????? Skerrit once called the UWP a mickey mouse political party. I am now wandering whether he was referring to himself and his Government. Maybe to be referred to as mickey mouse is not bad after all, however, for a Minister of Government to refer to himself as a Rottweiler in the jungles of Guyana must be scarry. Talking about being scarry, those of us who heard a Minister on the Matt hot seat this morning, must agree with the Minister who calls himself a Rottweiler.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! Yet another case of the government’s representatives showing either total incompetence or absolute disregard for the constitution and its requirements!!!!! We must ask why is it that this is happening so often. Is it that these guys do not bother to read up the constitution before making these appointments (extremely unlikely) or is it that there is some ulterior motive behind these particular persons being appointed despite the appointments being contrary to that required under the constitution? They seem totally relaxed about appearing to be incompetent over and over again and so I can only come to one conclusion; that it is a deliberate attempt for whatever reason, to contravene the laws of the state at every opportunity!I therefore ask yet again……WHAT ARE THEIR MOTIVES AND WHY IS IT THAT MY PEOPLE CONTINUE TO TURN A BLIND EYE TO THIS SORT OF PRACTICE????? Hmmmmmmmmmm

Why do operatives of the Civil Service always find and present opportunities for the opposition to “kill” government? If the present situation is because of his age, then there is no reason why such information could not be had earlier during the vetting process. I take the Ag’s word (an honorable man) that Mr. De Freitas was asked a straight question about his age. Where is our due diligence mechanism to spot these issues. If age is the issue at hand, then the opposition has a real cause to criticize the government for what on the surface appears to be sheer ineficiency – at least in this matter. No excuses. Only ill ness or a unilateral withdrawal by the Mr. defreitas could absolve the government from the media one onslaught that this case presents. After all, was Behanzin correct about theage. The Hon. AG ison record dispelling any such rumour? When the matter came up I though this was just politics, since a simple matter such as this could easily have been cleared once the application was received. Or was it a situation that those involved in reviewing the applications did not know what they were about or the gentleman hid his age? I have no evidence about that one. But the AG better have a good explanation cause he should be held accountable. Whatever the outcome though, I still staying where I am. after all we all miscalculate and we all do silly and often times costly mistakes anyway.
