“Concerned” Dominicans to protest at UN

The group is concerned over recent occurrences in the community of Salisbury

A group of Dominicans living in the diaspora, who say they are concerned over what is taking place on the island, have organized a protest on Saturday, June 27 at the United Nations (UN) in New York.

They say they want “to show solidarity with the people of Dominica” and to “bring awareness” of what has been taking place in Dominica lately, especially protest action and the response of the police in the community of Salisbury.

PRO for the group, Cherry Pacquette told DNO on Thursday that additionally they are willing to engage human rights groups at the UN in an effort to bring “an amicable solution” to what is taking place on the island.

“What the police have done is Salisbury is of primary importance to us because we know those are violations of UN human rights,” she said.

She stated that she hopes the global press will assist in creating an awareness and the government will respond to international pressure that may be applied.

Pacquette insisted that the matter is not a political one.

“What people seem to have a difficulty in distinguishing is between politics and governance,” she stated. “And so we all have our political views, we all have the parties that we support. But once a party is elected they now have to govern and they have to govern effectively because that is what they are paid to do. And the only way to ensure they are doing so is to hold them accountable..”

She added, “This is non-partisan, this is non political. It is about citizens demanding fair justice, accountability and treatment from their government.”

Pacquette said the reaction to the protest so far has been good, with responses received from Dominicans living in Florida, Texas, Atlanta, even Canada.

“There has been a tremendous amount of support,” she stated. “And again it is support across party lines because people are realizing what is happening is really unneccessary.

In a press release the group also said it is advocating for the following:

· An end to the government’s militaristic responses to citizens’ concerns;
· Greater transparency about its sales of the country’s citizenship to individuals from high-security countries such as Iran, and accountability to the people of Dominica for the revenues generated through those sales;
· Increased government role in protecting the rights of children against violence and abuse by amending legislation and allocating more resources to social protection programs; and
· The protection of Dominicans’ fundamental democratic rights to freedom of speech and assembly.

“Members of Dominica’s diaspora hope that this protest will prompt the government of Dominica to adopt policies that promote peace, dialogue, and transparency for the progress and prosperity of the Commonwealth of Dominica,” the release said.

I hope both sides protest peacefully, and not block any roads, because the US also has laws to abide by. Otherwise….. …. they will face the same.

there’s a big difference between protesting and rioting. so please be clear as to what you’re defending in Dominica. because throwing fire bombs at police officers, setting police officers on fire, blocking main highways, and pelting stones after local law enforcement officers sure isn’t protesting. sounds more like rioting to me.

Cherry and the rest remember, Do not try to free a people who don’t want to be free, they will hate you for it. remember you stand for the freedom of your country. do not be deterred. some in Dominica will not see what is happening to them and their country. They will remain blind until they are too old to fend for themselves and find that Social security has been destroyed too. Stand for Democracy, let the supporters of these exploiters fall for the scams of their leader.

Oh please if this is not politicaly motivated protest what is. No Government in recent memory has done more to better the living standard of Dominicans than the labour party. Know one gets everything they want all of the time. Come on people Rome was not built in one day. And yes Dominica has a long way to go but no one can denie the fact that this labour party government has done a tremendous amount of good to all dominicans and Dominica. I could not be more proud to be a Dominican than i am now since this labour party came to power. U all forget or memory has failed you, that it was Edson James and the UWP that was involved in the salse of Dominican passport. The reason why the DLP is in power today is because they know how to govern and they love all Dominicans. The election is over get over it.

It is heart breaking to see how DLP people view people in the diaspora who came home to vote for them and now are against their perverted policies. Folks like LaborOfLove, Listener, Righteous and KID ON THE BLOCK have shown how ungrateful this cabal has become.

When DLP needed their support they were prepared to kill all those who opposed then cominig in to vote but today they are calling them illegal and rediculing them for not being able to come home for a relative funeral. Wow!! How quickly we forget! Tanto-tanto my friends because he who laughs last, laugh the best.

    Assertive, NOT Aggressive!

Some poles seem to be shaking; talking about a so called protest. Sorry poles it is real and shall be effective in bringing some pressure on your despots and make a positive difference in your lives. Democracy has to be preserved at all costs; and the international body has to be reminded of the abuse of fundamental rights taking place in Dominica. Like was stated it is about governance not politics and crosses party lines. Some of you need to develop some testicular fortitude to tell your party leaders that you disagree with them sometimes. It is called being truly independent.

You obviously are an illiterate fool and the point went clean over your head. The point that was being made is let the duminicans in NY try to do the same nonsense that was done here in Salisbury and let’s see what the authorities in NY will do their tails. If you want to compare you have to recreate the same scene.

Let’s hope you ALL protest the very same way the Salisbury people did. Block Highways, Stone and pelt bottles at the Cops, set things on fire. Tell the authorities if you TOUCH ONE, YOU TOUCH ALL. Damage police and other vehicles and tell Obama come and hear and see what you ALL ARE DEMONSTRATING about. If THE ABOVE CAN’T BE ACHIVED miss Cherry your effort and your followers was in vain. You just wasted your time and others and you ALL should be charged. Then call LINNOX LINTON to command that the charges be dropped immediately.

      • June 21, 2015

Are they planning to condemn the blocking of roads?

Are they planning to condemn the attack on the police?

Are they planning to protest against those who prevented people from going to work and school.

If not their protest action at the UN is pointless because they only want rights for one set and not all. Human Rights for All.

Except if they are informing the US that they are supporting terrorism in another country and could very well do the same on US soil?

Will they condemn that the blocking of the main highway was illegal?

What will they be protesting for? To allow people from preventing others to live in a peaceful manner and go about their daily lives in peace?

Will they be protesting to allow bloodshed on our island while they sit in the US? Should the US take note of that and who they are?

If the people coming from the North and South had to remove the barricades themselves, have they given any thought of what could have happened? Who is right…

Sometimes I wonder at the intelligence on Dominicans when such disgraceful and distasteful comments are made on a media page or even during personal conversation. Dominica is a democratic country and thus persons have the right to protest in spite of what government party is in power. Why are you allowing yourself to be belittled like this because of political affliciation? Stop it, grow up and get some sense. Also remember that is the same people out of Dominica that you all on your unhealthy seats on whiles they work in snow, rain, blizzard and scotching sun to send a barrel for you all because you all lovers of the country keep electing Judases who keep stealing thirty plus pieces of silver to make themselves millionaires while you lovers of Dominica become poorer by the second. Finally remember that these are the same people you all depend on to come vote you all government into office each election, yes them same people. That’s why it’s Jesus who is my sole ruler. God save D.A.

Some of the organizers should come home to protest. Then again they can’t because they are probably illegal in the US. Some can’t come home, not even fro a relative’s funeral. I hope they are ready to face the consequences when the immigration descend on the protest to round up the illegal aliens.

    Dominica will welcome you.

Way to go ,I wish to commend the efforts of the Dominicans living in the USA and by extension in the UK who are standing with the people of Salisbury, and Dominica against the Dictatorial, Arrogant,
Greedy excuse, who are selling Dominican Passports at will , to fund their lavish lifestyles and refusing to put a penny in the treasury. We must stand up to them now before they produce more horns,to destroy the Dominican people. I believe idea of the protest in the US is already bearing fruit as we can see from some of the comments that some of the die hard supporters are so angry that the evil works of darkness done in secret is about to be placed under the microscope. This is our chance all those who are able join us on June 27th in NYC.

  14. June 19, 2015

Labourites, comrades and friends, please rest assured that this so-called protest in front of the United Nations is nothing but a big joke. The United States have no power over the sovereignty of our blessed Island Nation. The Supreme Leader is not concerned, much less worried, about these Uneducated Wicked People supporters overseas. As any upper-level Labourite will tell you, all our projections shows that Labour will remain in power for at least the next 30 years. Labourites do not allow your hearts to be troubled, our blessed and ordained Supreme Leader can stand on his record of infrastructural development and direct investments through the Economic Citizenship Program. These so-called protesters are protesting Government’s response to an organized political coup which was brought to an end without the loss of life due to enormous restraint by the Police. The United States will applaud the great Supreme Leader. These protesters are backward indeed!

      • June 20, 2015

@drake stop telling untruths. The UWP and its supporters have been demonstrating non stop without permission and no attempts have been made to stop them. They block public roads at will and demand that the perpetrators not be prosecuted. I guess when the UWP protest no dog should bark as it would be considered undemocratic. It seems that free expression and the right to object is a franchise that is controlled by the UWP.

Look here. The French had military troops along side the UN in Africa. The french soldiers were accused of unlawful sexual activities with kids, both boys and girls as old as 9 years, the UN is yet to even launch an investigation into the matter. And to add too that, right now the UN troops in the very same Africa and in Haiti are accused of doing the same thing as the French soldiers, paying to have sex with minors and anyone else that comes their way,it also includes food, cloth, medicine etc.
Exploiting the less fortunate people that they are suppose to be protecting. They, the UN is yet to take any kind of action on the matter.

Citizens have a right to be concerned. The facts are very clear…if you look at Skerrit’s response to this crisis he has shown ZERO interest in showing respect and interest in a peaceful resolution. Similar to Judas, he has three times denied an opportunity to at peace…

First – He refused to meet or send a minister to meet with the people on May 11 which would have ended the protest.

Second – He promised a town hall meeting and has yet to even attempt to schedule it. Instead he sends in his goons to cause destruction.

Third – He failed to meet with the Bishop and opposition leaders yesterday.

So why shouldn’t people across the globe engage in protests to encourage the PM to sit down and take a diplomatic approach to this situation? Everyone is SAYING they want peace, but as always when it comes to taking ACTION…we find all sorts of excuses for ourselves and our elected officials.

That is what these controlled systems does to those who do not understand what life really is about. Stop living in a fantasy world and bring yourself down to earth. You know I told you before, that you believe you are an authority on God word, however, if you believe that Skerrit is anointed, perhaps you and him are anointed by the same demon of your father the devil!

You need to look after Elizabeth; go visit with a psychiatrist to make sure you are normal, because the fart you talk assures me you have completely lost it! Sometimes we live with mental and psychological problems, and never realize that until the day we self destruct. I do believe that something is wrong with you psychologically.

They need to protest what is also happening in the US with the TPP and TPA, which is a glo3bal take over by the elite and bankers. If these bills pass, there will be no more US or the rest of the world as it gives all of the power to the corporate elite and bankers. They try to pass off these treaties as something that is “good” for the people. NO. it is good for THEM and bad for the people. This is a power grab and it may be the last one necessary. The PM has already sold out DA and the people are going to have to participate to get it back.

    June 18, 2015

Ms. Pacquette you said according to DNO: “we know those are violations of UN human rights”. Which legislation would like to be amended? What charter of the UN convention was violated? And please tell me, if the matter is not a political one, then what is it? Although I support the political action taken by the people of Salisbury if it is their determination to undertake the decision they did: Disrupting the regular activities is consistent with protests; but that does not necessarily make the protest legal. I am hoping you are not suggesting that the police should just stand by and allow this to continue indefinitely. I believe the dialogue taking place is sufficient and not some farfetched UN protest.

We the diaspora are trying to shape the outcome of what happens in the country, and it is to an extent why Dominicans so reject the show off-ers. My advice is UWP should learn from their mistakes and develop a plan on how to win elections.

Are you cynically suggesting that my legal non-sense could not have been written by a woman? My first research paper taught me to be careful of those types of reasoning- and yes, legal studies taught me how to reason logically and analytically, so I can look at the broad based picture, and not within a one dimensional spectrum.

While people have the right to protest, the government has a responsible to maintain civic responsibilities. How they approach the responsibility is an entirely different question.

They do not represent every D/can worldwide, who are not all disrespectful, disobedient and rebellious. I know D/cans who are on the side of the present government. They are displeased with the protesters.
Those who support the DLP government also have their opinion. Most D/cans, wherever they reside have common sense and intelligence and cannot be deceived.
I could write the UN and inform them of my views also based on what I have read especially on DNO about the Salisbury protests, what transpired, the disrespect for authority, the PM and for the Police and their rebelliousness.
It is easy for me to get the address and email of the UN by telephoning my MP’s or MPP’s office to get it. I could also get it from other sources.
The UN will know who are behind their protests and rebelliousness. Read DNO’s articles and they will know.

They would also be better off living a godly life of genuine worship and fervent prayer that God will bless D/ca, its residents and themselves in the US. Otherwise, all their efforts will be in vain.
They should also cease being bias against the government of Dominica, namely the PM. So much more could be stated.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is not amused and pleased with civil disobedience. St. Paul who spoke according to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit said, “Obey authority.” Let God deal with authority in His time.
They are demanding. They can achieve nothing good by their disobedient and rebellious protests.
The police did their utmost under the circumstances. They exhibited restraint amidst refusal to move and not to obstruct traffic and nationals and their stone throwing.
This is what the UN should be told; not what is based on their disobedience and rebelliousness to authority.

It is the manner in which they acted by protests.
They had no right to disobey the Police. Can one imagine that Salisbury residents throwing stones and whatever other weapons at the Police and the Police did not even touch them?

Dominica have nothing that America wants. eg oil. And keep complaining about investment in Dominica and then object to the PM trying to bring investment. I would like you to give me the list of Dominican billionaires abroad that invested in Dominica. I just need you to name one for me and i will sign up every Dominican i know to join your protest. We as a people need to stop complaining and come together. Dominica is one of the most peaceful and relaxing places on this planet. Keep trying to turn it into a Libya and see if America will loose sleep over it. All these people complaining resides overseas and visits Dominica every blue moon but wants to dictate the policies of the country. Remember Only a fool trips on what is behind him. Stop complaining about yesterday and last year that’s behind us.

I if you are so concerned about Dominica why would you have given up your citizenship and adopt another one? And now you don not another person to have Dominican citizenship. I am fed up of some of you who looking for fame by creating some false group just to bring attention to yourself in the name of Dominica. Stop making the rest of the world believe Dominica is a war zone or we a fighting like pigs. As a matter of facts the only fighting happening here are the people who are power thirsty fighting to gain power. Plain and simple……………………………just like that.

If you ask me, this is just a ridiculous move which will produce absolutely no fruit for us, or if it does; bad fruits will be the harvest. I do not support all that is done by the Skerrit Government, but at the same time the people of Salisbury can’t violate the rights of others in seeking to attain their rights. While they were seeking their right to earn a living that were infringing on that same right for thousands of Dominicans. I am of the view that the government ought not to neglect them simply because they are staunched supporters of the the opposition, but at the same time this does not authorize them to use violence against ordinary citizens going about their daily activities. The educated men and women in the United States are fully aware of the principles of international human rights and know better that to support the actions of these people.
