As part of celebrating 30 years of existence the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) has launched a magazine.
The magazine which is dubbed “Persevering in Adversity” was launched at a press conference held at the DAPD office on Tuesday afternoon.
Speaking to reporters at the press conference DAPD Secretary, Irma Raymond-Joseph, said that the magazine gives readers an inside look at how the organization has persevered despite many adversities over its three decades of existence.
“There are examples oof how we persevered in adversity, highlighting both the experiences of persons with disabilities as well as organizations as a collective body. We invite you to read stories of ten individuals whom you will discover, epitomize what resilience, tenacity, conviction, faith, courage, determination and sacrifices really mean,” she said.
She added that the magazine also highlights the struggles that the organization encounters and the steps that were taken to remain relevant and current in the absence of stable finances.
Articles include a commentary on “the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, a feature on Special Education, essays from the winners of the Primary and Secondary School Essay Competition Winners, messages from the President, Prime Minister, Minister for Social Services Community Development and Gender Affairs, the Leader of the Opposition and JICA.
“Our Unsung Heroes is another interesting article that you shouldn’t miss. We are pleased that we could produce this educational and resourceful material on this special occasion. We hope that you will enjoy reading its contents. It should be an additional collection in your archives or in your library,” she said.
In the meanwhile the DAPD announced that Louraine Bedminister of the Newtown Primary school and Lyn Fagan of the Dominica Community High School were the first place winners in their 30th anniversary Essay writing competiton.
Administrative assistant of the DAPD, Ann-Marie Nantan, explained that the organization was disappointed in the response by the schools. Only three essays were received from the Secondary schools and six essays were received from the Primary schools.
Primary schools were asked to write on the topic “What can I do to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in my community” while secondary schools were asked to submit essays on the topic, “My role in creating an all inclusive society for persons leaving with disabilities in Dominica.”
In second place in the Primary school category was Shanice Rolle from Laudat Primary and in third place was Cynthia Charles of the Convent Preparatory School.
Shazzie Lewis of the Dominica Seventh Day Adventist school came in second, while Shakira Bramble of the Pierre Charles Secondary emerged third.
A talent show with a difference is another major activity for the DAPD 30th anniversary celebrations.
Executive Director of the DAPD, Natalie Murphy, revealed that the show will be held on Novemeber 30th at the Arawak House of Culture.
