DNO POLL: “Lions” should not be placed on new bridge

One of the 'Lions' or Foo Dogs on the bridge

The results from a Dominica News Online poll, which was patronized by 628 voters, have shown that a majority of readers believe the “lions” should not have been placed on the newly opened bridge in Roseau.

The results show that 62 percent – that’s 389 voters – believe the statues should not have been placed on the bridge while 38 percent – 239 voters, are happy to see them there.

The poll asked whether the authorities should have placed the statues on the bridge.

DNO’s poll is not a scientific one.

The bridge, named the Dominica/China Friendship Bridge, was opened on February 1.

Although many people simply refer to the statues as “lions” they are actually ‘foo dogs’ or ancient sacred dogs of Asia that guard Buddhist temples.

The 70-metre bridge was constructed over a 17-month period to the tune of EC$8-million provided by mainland China.

DNO I think It would be more helpful if you could find out what led to the decision of having Foo Dogs i the first place.

Did the Chinese take upon themselves to volunteer these statues or did the Gov’t give the Chinese the opportunity to place them there.

What is the Gov’t view on all of this.

I think you are stoking the fire in the hope that you can obtain info from the Gov’t or that you do not like it and therefore seeking support from the public.

Did France not make an exact replica of their tiny statue of liberty and give America the larger statue as a gift? Is that not one of the worlds most famous attractions to this day? Is there a problem in that? Did they not put there stamp on it? Do the two countries get along? Not really! It is called a gift.

I really have no idea what is wrong with Dominicans. They simply cannot accept any gifts whatsoever. If you all have a problem with those sorts of things then gather in the communities and donate to build what you need.

Hey you guys I need some clarification here . Are these ”Lion Heads” on the bridge or ‘DRAGON HEADS’
I am confused ; reason being I have never seen a single lion in China.
What I do know is Dem Chinee idolizing dragons, so my people relax . When I hit Da for my retirement an i start my zoo i going an make sure I have one female and one male lion and we good to go , so leave de lion head them alone , de bridge will be name after my zoo an my lion dem .
Tankx China for de bridge . Dominicans learn to speak Chineese so you all can curse dem back in Chinee when they curse allu . right now when they greet allu shaking allu han they may well be saying ”sarkway sot” in chineese and allu dunno , allu smiling back heheheheheh.

Passing through there today i noticed that all four statues are covered in something. Like someone through something on them. you know what i think of all the views from narrow minded people? why don’t you try get the majority of the young men of Dominica to stop throwing their life away? stop standing on the block and looking people that are going along their own way trouble, stop snorting coke which seems to be the new in thing among them these days and most of all stop trying to live a “gangster” life, like what they see on tv, acting tough and playing bad. and instead go to school and learn well. BECOME ENGINEERS and other professionals SO THEY CAN BUILD BRIDGES AND PUT FOUR PARROT STATUES ON IT! and not deface public property. then we wont have to seek help from else where because we already have people that can handle the job right here. The Chinese didn’t have to fund the road project and bridge, and if they didn’t all now you all would be crying that the roads so bad your vehicle paying for it, the bridge out of town old. *shakes head in disappointment*

Dominicans need to wake up and smell the cocoa tea!! The Chinese people put the statues as a REMINDER that THEY paid for and BUILT the bridge… The very Dominicans that are complaining about the bridge are the very ones who take their precious time to go see it just to criticize. Stop wasting your time on something that build and finish already. the bridge is here for a reason!! use it and shut up about it. you think the Chinese people care if you don’t like it or not? It build already! In my opinion, if you doe like it… suck salt boss!

I guess soon we will beable to put up elephants, gifaths, monkeys ect.. All over the place as deco to enhance the country, in an effort to promote tourism.

Before them Chinese leave don’t forget to ask them to enhance the public convinence at the Purple turtle beach. The other day I took my family to that beach on a lil picnic and it so happen my lil 8 year old daugther had to use the restroom and to my surprise the one on the beach area had been out of other. I turn to the resturant at the beach and was turned down by one off the employee who said ” there isn’t a public convinent at the resturant. Hmmmm! I actually had to take my daugther on a hike into the near by bush to popo.
        Don’t what to go on.
Remember tourism is our business Mr Dog Last! So please don’t forget to BEG a PUBLIC CONVINENT. It will go along way and maybe Dominican oversea would feel proud to enjoy the Purple Turtle Beach as much as the tourist in that area would enjoy this facility. And maybe you can make them put some more foo dogs in that area. It would really enhance that area.

Chinese guardian lions, known as Shishi (Chinese: 石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally “stone lion”) or Imperial guardian lion, and often incorrectly called “Foo Dogs” in the West, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. They have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits. Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance, in China and in other places around the world where the Chinese people have immigrated and settled, especially in local Chinatowns.

The lions are always created in pairs, with the male resting his paw upon the world and the female restraining a playful cub that is on its back. They occur in many types of Chinese pottery and in Western imitations.

Now this is what I have to say to all those ppl who are either ignorant to the facts of the entire situation or are just totally Dumb in my opinon.

    F
irst you all need to know your history and as a ppl know where we are heading. I read a few of the comments and some ppl use all sorts of illustrations to justify their reasoning about the chinese and the so called free gifts that they are giving so generously and that’s ok with me.
Dominica is a very small country compared to some of the countries believed
to have china towns. We only have 72 thousand people and a small town of Roseau. Can someone pls explain to me how can a china town form part of Roseau. My ppl get wise and wake up. There r more foo dogs to be placed at the state house and the state college. Chinese are taking over commerce in the country and that’s not good for our economy. Its only making life much more difficults for the native of this land to survive. Its only leading us into more poverty and countinuos beggers like our present administration is demonstrating. Simple senario to take into consideration:
When a native Dominicans have a business and make a profit , that profit is place in the bank which is avaliable to other dominica for business and housing developments. On the other hand when chinese, haitians, spanish and others make profit , its not banked in our bank rather it sent over to their bank in their country making it more difficult for locals to obtain financial assist for development. Also this scenario when large sums of money live our state makes it much more difficult for our banks to lower interest rates rather it forces them to increase the rates in other to make profit.
So who have will always have while the poor will remain poor.

I can go on and on but if ppl continue to be ignorant or dumb it makes no sence but keep my charm and I can garantee you, we will as see the end results for the gift that we receive for nothing.
My prays go out to all Dominicas. Its time we come together for the good of all Dominicans and not some Dominicans because you maybe benefiting directly from those who look for their benefits from this sort of aid.

      @ economist

There is no need to go through all this explanation which will be disregarded by faithful Dominicans wherever they reside. Those lions or foo dogs, whatever they are called should never have been placed on the bridge. They are conspicuous and offend the majority of sensible Dominicans.
You should know that Dominica is a Christian country. It is not a Buddhist country. Even though China helps Dominica and built the bridge, there is no reason for them to slap those lions or foo dogs, whichever, on the bridge which was constructed in Dominica. A small notation could have been made “Built by China, Dominica/China Friendship Bridge” but by no means their foo dogs placed on the bridge. It was inconsiderate of them who placed those things on the bridge.
Was the DA government aware that they would have been placed? The government should answer to DA nationals about that. This is taking advantage of Dominica’s acceptance of China’s help and ignoring its religious beliefs and heritage.
If you do not comprehend this, there is nothing else anyone could state which will convince you. I urge the DA government to take them out. They are offensive to Dominica and DA nationals. They do not symbolize Dominica whatsoever.
In God we believe and in God we trust. Our hope and protection lies in Him and Him alone. This is our faith and our motto in Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe that you and the economist are on the same trend just different words of expression…plus I do believe I appreciated that little history now when perhaps a tourist asks i won’t seem so dumb as to not know what’s going on in my own country. the government alas shall continue to remain elusive and not respond to the people and thus people make their own assumptions they bring it upon their own heads. What legacy are we leaving our younger generation?

      February 12, 2012

We in DA and in the Caribbean Islands need to open our eyes and mind: Nothing is given to anyone in this World “FREE” considering the Global Political Climate. China is already the #1 World Economic Power Leader, who continues to spread its wings and manipulates its way throughout the global hemisphere, by planting a seed(s) (i.e.), assisting with financial and medical support, building infrastructures, roads, putting in place Ambassadors/Representatives, piggy-backing on other planted Countries like Cuba, Venezuela, Libya, etc., etc.

Please bear in mind, none of these services are free even when they are performed on a humanity basis. Their intentions are good and physically demonstrated but their long-termed expectations and agendas are masked with unknown objectives. It’s all a political and economical leadership strategy, which will eventually make China an overall central power and force to deal with in the nearest global future.

China already has control on some Oil Producing Countries, plus its own production and reserves. It won the rights to influence control and operation of the Suez Canal, the U.S. owes it billions of dollars, it is hand-in-hand with Russia and some Middle East Countries to include several in South America and other countries world-wide.

Eventually, the next foot will drop on DA and various demands will be made by China considering many of the Chinese people in DA are already D/can Citizens, to include the babies who will be born there-after, hold political positions in the DA Government and eventually execute China’s long-term plan.

Next to come will be specific locations in DA called China Town(s) (as already on the way or established), which will completely wipe-out our local Merchants and Vendors efforts, since they will not be able to compete economically…. Hopefully, our Government will be able to encourage and demand that they employ a certain percentage of non-Chinese people from our local communities…Scary situation! We have not seen nor heard the end of this Chinese Caribbean Island invasion. Heads up!

Mental Slavery persists and would take a very long time for Domninicans to get back on track. Once the mind remains controlled, from within and without, the rest of the body is the controllers own for manipulation, de-culturization, turning citizens into beggars that they never thought they would entertain. The days of chattel slavery may be over, but enslavement of the mind is even worse. It manifests itself in many different forms. Many have become victims.

Our first inhabitants, the Kalinago Peoples, discovered Waitikubuli, settled all over the island, fought off the invaders and colonialists. They were given trinkets, bibles, promised a better life, while their land was slowly taken away. The same happened to the people of African descent. They resisted consistently, however. What lessons have been learnt from those struggles of our forefathers?

Today in 2012, sections of society defend those who would impose their symbols on us, with no questions. They would cause their own local symbols to be cast aside, walked upon, like our flag, and would not put up the kind of defence like what they are doing for the “FOO Dogs” on our Bridge (ours nuh?) in Roseau. It is not so easy to fully understand those things. Take heed of the popular saying, ” Money make the devil dance.”

Do not compare Dominica to those U.S. and Canadian cities. Consider their size and population in comparison to that of Dominica.
Dominica is a small country; Roseau for that matter, a small town. Can you imagine if they keep building and they place their symbols all over Roseau and Dominica? The first impression would be that the Chinese have taken over the town/island.

Drivings across the new bridge guarded by sacred male and female lions representing yin and yang,(male and female) which westerners denigrate by calling fu dogs, the Han Chinese residents of Roseau feel right at home. After all these ancient symbols, which once guarded Buddhist temples were later were adopted by the Han emperor to guard the imperial palace. It is impossible for Dominican businesses to compete with the entire business structure of the Chinese government. The formula is simple, they gutted American industry the same way. Sell below the market at a loss or sell inferior goods but extremely cheaply, even at a loss. This will drive your competition out of business, then you raise prices and get back your original loss and then some in profit. It isn’t the statues, it the price tag. Sometimes free can be very costly indeed.

The Canadian Prime Minister is presently in China and was given as a gift two panders for a while anyway. There colour is black and white and are beautiful and cute. They are now at the Toronto Zoo. SOme people are flocking to the Zoo to see them. When the weather gets warm in spring or summer a few of us hope to visit the Zoo; have not gone there for a long time although I do not live far from there. Those panders are welcoming than the lions/foo dogs. Maybe they should have built “panders instead.

  28. enslaved again?
    February 11, 2012

When ones hands are out BEGGING, anything placed in them is accepted. That is the stage Dominicans have reached. The hundreds of Years of Chattel Slavery demoralised the African people. Many still believe that their status is being subservient to foreigners, and those with power, wealth, assets. Today, those chains are on people’s minds, warping ones thinking. The body is like a commodity to be traded to all and sundry for a few dollars more. Massa day ain’t done.

Mental Slavery causes negative thought. Sovereignty, dignity, self-worth, self-esteem means nothing. Everytime you pass on the bridge with the Foo dogs at both ends, you become mentally engaged with that symbol. After time, that foreign symbol is accepted as yours. It now has more importance to you than any local symbol. Subsequently, You would accept anything the Chinese are involved in Dominica, as coming from heaven, from God, from Buddha. They could do no wrong.

The bridge is named the Dominica-Cuba friendship bridge, but only Chinese Symbols adorn the bridge. Give me a break. For decades upon decades, the colonial countries enabled to force on us a culture alien to our own African heritage and indigenous way of life. What has been the impact? Devastating. What do we, as a people value? Moral, ethical values gone. Love for country and our local symbols declining, almost gone. Respect for what is ours, our elders, our environment, has taken a downward slide. Today, the BEGGAR policy is held high.

The allegiance of many Dominicans is not to Dominica and its beauty and unique culture, but to the country which hands out money, “FOO DOGS” or gives us a Coffee plant or rehabilitate some kilometres of road, and so on. Meanwhile our own people are treated with disrespect, their ability to produce, to create revenue and wealth is seriously curtailed. Today Dominicans are made to feel they are almost totally dependent on people from outside for their livelihood. The effects of mental enslavement is having its toll. Just check many of the blogs, implying that without China’s help we would ‘all starve.’

  29. February 11, 2012

    February 11, 2012

Now a days we don’t see the big picture in Dominica. Why are we making noise about statues we don’t even understand when we have serious issues going on. Why are all our local businesses failing while the Chinese are flourishing? How is it possible that the Chinese can afford to have rock bottom prices on the same stuff that the local businesses have. It is true that competition should be encouraged, but something smells like a fish market.
I hope the customs officers findings will be publicized. I see some stuff myself and it didn’t look good.
If we take a close look we will notice that while competing with the local business the Chinese prices a really low. As soon as the local business closes down their prices shoot up. All the stores have the same prices and the same goods. Not to sell out the secrete, but just check the serial numbers next time you’re browsing.

With all that said, I would like to thank the Chinese government and people for the work they have done for us especially for 2011/2012 and let them know that we appreciate these free, no ties, no obligation gifts. Mr.P.M. if I’m not right to say so please correct me.

I really wonder if Dominicans know what they’re saying or talking about? America has china towns everywhere in every state. These people invest millions in the states and canada and is keeping the economies of these countries alive. Blacks and Caribs in Dominica need to form a Cooperative to help their businesses strive, learn from the Chinese, work and make sacrifices.

They make the caribbean alive, without them in Roseau or st johns, what a boring place it would be. The Lebanese are not developing and they fresh with it, draining our countries. The Chinese developing the place and we should be thankfull.

If we say we a christian nation, start acting like christians and show them that god is love.

      @ Antigua

Why don’t we develop Dominica ourselves? Why do we have to bring in foreigners to do so, thats already a big no no.
Concerning christianity, being a christian does not mean one has to be foolish either. The chinese are by far a professed paganist country, and they show now way of wanting to stop. They respect no holy days whatsoever and are not in no hurry to accept christianity so mentioning that approachis pure hypocrisy.
China is much bigger than Dominica so it should be us going to china to get a better living instead of them coming here to conquer.

Please. If you have ever visited the US, you would know that certain areas are allocated by the government to this “China Towns”. Do you think the Chinese would invade Manhattan, Young Street Toronto, the Water Front Barbados like this? We can’t have our center of commerce becoming China Town to the point that Locals can’t even have businesses in Roseau as the rent now accommodates Chinese Government dollars (Rate of exchange: I’ll pay you double and a year’s advance).

And call me small towner if you like, but I do not support anyone posting their idolatrous icons around where my children and I have to pass.

        @ Hmm

I agree with you on this one. China Town in Toronto is far removed from Yonge Street, downtown Toronto, the main business and shopping area. If people do not live near China Town and really, no one does and they want to go to there, they have to go out of their way. It is as if it does not exist. I very rarely think of it.
A few years ago I planned a party for some T & T friends. Some of them are Chinese and Indians. I decided to cook Chinese Food. A Jamaican Chinese friend and I went to China Town and bought some Chinese vegetables to prepare the dinner. That was the last time I went to China Town. I must state that their vegetables are recommended and are nutritious. Today, some supermarkets sell them.

Its not the foo dogs allyou have to worry about it is the Chinese themselves.
The Chinese don’t do anything for nothing there is a price to pay and that price is Dominica.(Waitukubuli). And yes we have to thanks them for the works that they are doing in D/A. But we have to remind them that the island do not belong to them. This island is not TIBET and we will not be treated like the way they treat the Tibetan people. Some of you who love freeness and like to BEFF, you should be using your computers, Tv-news, and phones to find out what is happening outside Dominica, there is a big world out there. Life does not start and end on the Nature Island as some of you might think.

This is part of a Sky news report::: Recent Chinese immigration into Tibetan areas, and the large economic disparity between Tibetans and the Chinese majority, have also fuelled resentment.

in an apparent attempt to appease Tibetan anger, in recent years the Chinese government has poured billion of pounds into the region, building new infrastructure and settling nomads in newly-constructed homes……
(All the Tibetan people wants is for China to give them back their country).

Well, I can only assume the little monument to Simon Bolivar is also, according to some of the fanatics below, an “idol” that causes hurricanes to come during hurricane season, people to forget where they put their car keys, and children to do poorly on exams. After all, a foreign country put up that monument, and it isn’t of Jesus or a sisserou or a crapaud. Therefore, the Bolivar statue must be evil, and all hell has broken loose in Dominica since it was erected!

…oh, right. Just another monument everyone forgot about and that caused no harm whatsoever, just like these lions/foo dogs. In a few months, the fanatics will forget all this “idol” nonsense altogether.

The questions is: Do they come alive and prevent some people from crossing the bridge? Does it allow only Labour’s supporters from crossing the bridge? Does it attack UWP’s supporters? Would it ask me for an identification card when I go to see the cricket match at the stadium? I have a sense that this thing comes alive at midnight, and roams the streets of Roseau…

All joking aside, we have to pick our battles. Is it worth arguing over? I am sure it was not done unconsciously, because there is a motive behind everything the Chinese do. If a person gives you a gift, does he/she put his/her name on it to remind you that it was gifted to you?

        C’est moi

Have you been sleeping or were too young when this hospital was built? Dominica was then a British Colony of Great Britain. This is why it was named in honour of Princess Margaret. Who knows? She may have assisted with funding of this hospital. Ask your present Prime Minister or other Minister. They should be able to explain further.
Consider that Dominica was once a French Colony. Think of the names of villages which have French names. This is why Patois is spoken in DA. Would you or anyone consider changing that? I hope not! It is our heritage.

      @ Dubique 767

Your comment is beyond the point. Are you without understanding? They write their names on cards, etc. Do you keep the cards or throw them in the garbage? These are temporary matters. The discussion here is pertaining to those conspicuous lions/foo dogs in Dominica and not a personal, birthday or Christmas gift from one individual to another. This matter of those sculptures is permanent unless they are taken down. They represent China, its belief and heritage and not that of Dominica, to the eyes of those who see them and many will see them, Dominican nationals, DA visitors, other visitors as also tourists. They will ask, “What is going on here? Am I in China?”

  45. Not Easy

      February 11, 2012

so what if they put a lion on the bridge? a lot of folks making an issue over a bloody lion and missing the point- the point is you people got a dam bridge which will no doubt help the flow of traffic in the area. why can’t you just leave it as that? some of allu just too ridiculous u hear- roaring just like that same lion you have a problem with. get on with it and just appreciate the practicality of the bridge instead rather that being so fixated on some silly little non issue.

…and the catholic church initially came with good intention, carrying the bible in the name of God, right? If you are black, and a son or daughter of former slave, you will get where I am going with this. As I can tell, you are still trying to get rid of what was gifted to you by the church, because you still don’t get it. What was gifted to you was Christianity – which is what enslaved you…it was all in the name of taking you to a better place…where did you end up? I could go on and on, and you still won’t get it…

@ Admin: Chinese guardian lions, known as Shishi (Chinese: 石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally “stone lion”) or Imperial guardian lion, and often incorrectly called “Foo Dogs” in the West.

I’ve heard a lot of stories about these. people say they are lions people say they are dragons. While people with nothing to say criticize and give some deep dark superstitious meaning.

They are actually imperial guardian lions (commonly called “foo dogs”). They are paired, male and female. As you face the entry, the male is on the right with a ball under his paw, and the female is on the left with a cub beneath her paw. Symbolically, the male guards the stucture of the home or building, while the female guards the family inside. The ball is the “flower of life”, the cub is the “cycle of life”, or heaven and earth.

It is a Buddhist symbol true, but who are we to judge the the religion of a civilization that has been together as one ever since the beginning of their existence. While we in this Christian land worship the same God, yet the many denominations cannot see eye to eye, and are always Bashing each other. Its time to stop taking politics to the next ‘negative’ level and instead take our home to the next ‘positive’ level.

Open YOUR EYES IT IS A FOO DOG, A DRAGON AN EVIL THING. THEY WILL COME FOR YOU in the night and steal your freedom and then your eyes will be opened way too late. I can’t believe this is my country. Soon they will be bringing drugs in the country, maybe it is already there especially if there is no tarif for their goods coming into DA. Man you guys are asleep. WAKE UP MY PEOPLE AND SEE YOUR FREEDOM IS PROBABLY ALREADY LOST. Get rid of these people, no one in the world wants them why should we. Kick them out of DA NOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!

a stone statue we making noise about? if we used to place statues of our parrot on our infrastructure maybe the chinese would not have placed them at the entrance/exit of the bridge.every nation likes to put it’s stamp on things,up to now england have their stamp on our currency so i don’t see what the big issue is about a piece of carved stone

I am one of the 38 RED percent here online who voted “YES”.
We all know that the “blues” are in the majority on line, but on the
ground, the REDS is in the high-ups.

I say, leave the Lions where they are. Because they fall in line with the “One China Policy”

Mass, mass play mass, till you hear de devil pass. Hear what Red-She say, we go work always, we go work pass all ash-Wednesdays! :-P

RED-SHOE,u are one of those idiots who does not have a clue as to who u are and what u should stand for.U are one of those sell out to whosoever like those who helped sell out black people into forced slavery.

Ur so right. The blues are in numbers because they r the more educated ones who can use the computer for information to educate themselves on issues, whereas the red are in majority on the ground because the majority depend on rum shop talk and are considered more ignorant in our society. Don’t u realize that we have an extremely high percentage of illiteracy on island and to be honest its not some ppl fault. We r a ppl with a deep history. My advice to REDS is to stop the ignorance and start to educated these ppl on matter of interest. There is a lot to learn in this world rather than knowing truth and not accepting.

The LION came for Africa, the Chinese adopted it becasue of it’s strenght, so why is it not good for Dominica, the UK has a Lion on it’s Sport Flag, USA has Lions on their State houses, The LION is AFRICAN and NOT Chinese!

Dominica is multicultural. Chinese all over? You think a statues from china takes away from dominica culture? We just got a million dollar gift and the conversation is about statue? Ungrateful. I’m sure the chinese didn’t force it there. They proposed and we agreed cause it it too minor a detail.

As a Dominica living abroad, when I come home i’d reather have something more symbolic to that represents us. I agree, that it should be replaced.

I am also a Dominican loving abroad, and I would prefer to see a wonderful bridge with Lion, tigers , foo dog or foo cats than an old broken down bridge constructed in the 70s or 80s. We love assistance but do not want to appreciate the people that provide the assistance.

you live abroad how many statues of different things do you see?? hundreds. does it take anything away from what ever country you live in ???NO!!!! Is a statue of a lion taking away from DA’s beauty?? NO. Look at the big picture, we have a new bridge that will ease traffic congestion in the city. Be happy!!!

You are blind and I feel sorry for you. DOMINICANS LOVE FREE. BUT ANYTHING FREE FROM THE CHINESE WILL TAKE YOUR FREEDOM AWAY. What does the Chinese want from us? What is in DA that is of interest to them? What have they discovered in DA that is so important to them? I mean we have a lot of granite but who doesn’t? Dominicans must band together and get rid of them otherwise America WILL COME after the DA Government. Just keep watch!!

    • February 11, 2012

It will not be replaced, just accept it
