Dominica’s ‘Whale Whisperer’ shares a remarkable story

Andrew Armour

The Grind TV Blog: Andrew Armour, who runs Kubuli Watersports on the Caribbean island of Dominica, has been called the “Whale Whisperer” because of his ability to communicate with sperm whales, particularly a young male named “Scar.”

“Once I’m in the water I try to reach them acoustically by making this noise in the water, and it’s the same noise all the time so they know it’s me,” he says. “So I’m talking to them all the time in the water, and they start coming.”

To be sure, had Herman Melville been to Dominica and swum with its whales, he might have had trouble finding the inspiration to write the classic novel, “Moby Dick.”

The primary school children of the Caribbean have been reading about this in the following school text book:
    New Caribbean Junior Reader 5 ISBN 0 602 25238 5
published by Ginn and Company Ltd 1994 079402

“Whale watching off Dominica….I have seen a Sperm whale Cow nursing three calves while the other Pod members dive to feed. One cow/nursemaid tends to as many as three calves while the other members of the Pod go off on their dives for as long as one hour and as deep as 6000 feet.
….The calves were anxiously nuzzling her until She responded by tilting on her side to begin nursing them.
…attracted to the drifting dive boat, both calves spent thirty minutes swimming around and upside down under the boat, competing to get closer to us…..the curious whales wanted a much closer look at us in the water.
These tours are not only educational and fun , but also give visitors the opportunity to contribute to fund raising to help conservation.
