A meeting later this evening will determine the fate of the seventh annual St. Peters Fisheries Cooperative Eat Fish Day in Colihaut.
Eat Fish Day was to take place on Sunday, November 9 but organizers say the announcement of general election on Wednesday has put a damper on it.
This weekend the two political parties on the island are planning major events which could put a freeze on all activities for Eat Fish Day.
Organizers held a press conference on Thursday and said the election announcement has rained on their parade.
“What has happened now is this press conference was supposed to bring people up to date but yesterday’s announcement has placed sort of a damper,” Francis Paul, president of the cooperative said. “Because conventional wisdom is if you have two political parties having major rallies at the same day if would affect whatever you are doing.”
He said the the committee will meet to chart a way forward. “So what we intend to do is the committee would be having a meeting this evening to assess the whole situation and see whether we should go forward with the Eat Fish Day,” Paul said.
The event was expected to feature a wide array of fish prepared in different ways, cultural performances and on-stage performances by two major acts.
A 15-man band from Switzerland, who wanted to perform since last year and has already booked their airline flights, and Tripple K global were expected to be the highlight of the day.
The event was a collaboration between the St. Peters Fisheries and the Colihaut Village council.
Several major sponsors has also vowed their support, including Kubuli, LIME, Ross University, Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and Gardarkhan, among others.
This event is always part of the calendar of events for the independent season every year and is always held on the first Sunday after November 03rd. The reason being to allow those visitors who come in for the independence season to enjoy the different type of fresh fish recipes and dishes before heading back to their respective countries. Therefore the government should be blamed for the failure of this event as lots of time and money was spent in the planning of this event as is customary each year.
You are right, but as stated the two political parties are planning events this weekend, who will go to the Eat Fish.
Dominica will be divided this weekend.
when all the foreigners come down to vote? REALLY?
This is nonsense. Why should the announcement of general elections which will take place a whole month after eat fish day affect the event in any way. I can in no way blame the government, PM or any politician for this if it is so true. I blame the Fisheries organisers and the other people involved in eat fish day. Eat fish day has nothing to do with politics and this only shows how the minds of dominicans work. am i going to say that the dampening of any function or event that i plan between now and general elections is because of the calling of general elections? never. Do better preparations, better promotions, build up your fisherfolk and communities for the event, get corporations involved as stakeholders. but don’t blame the government for your lack of planning and preparation. If this is really the case, this is an example of how politically motivated we are. We rather chase and follow politicians around like lost sheep than celebrate a national life sustaining resource. In the end they will still be hungry after the motorcade and rally then remember “oh yes, colihaut had fish day, i dont mind a steam fish now.” non the less Mr. Paul i wish your organisation success in the event.
Well take turns one day go by DLP function then the next day go by UWP function more money more exposure, problem fixed.
Sadly, i have never been to Eat Fish Day but despite the Election madness, i will be there. Wait for me eh, Mr. Paul.
I am not surprised, Skeritt does not think of the people’s welfare. We have seen this behavior on several occasions, when the Government puts itself first. For instance, creole in the park popularity fight against the renaming of the airport.
Some people have been saying that the Prime Minister thinks he is a god but it’s people like you who is trying to make him god.The PM doesn’t know what is being planned in every village.(WHAT’S YOUR POINT??????)If he has to consider every activity that communities have planned, election will never be called.
Not you that say ,”call it nuh”,so what you vex for????
sound like you were forced to go to the airport instead of going to the park.
Mr Paul stop trying to blame the government for Eat fish day not taking place. An event is scheduled for Sunday and no promotions have been made and today is already Thursday. You guys are not prepared and looking for someone to blame. Not everyone is interested in following the campaign trains. I am more than willing to come to colihaut providing the fish dishes will be different from what I eat everyday and cheaper because over the years I haven’t been impressed and I’ve been to colihaut every year for eat fish day
I did not see anything written there is seeking to blame anybody. It only state a fact that if there is an event in Dominica when two major political parties are holding rallies, there will be an effect on the event.
No he is not blaming anyone but as usual everything is left to the last minute , so maybe they need a little more time 365 days to prepare is just not long enough
you are right. he was not blaming the government. we need to learn to read and understand
Read, understand then comment not the other way round. Strange you have been to Colihaut every year for Eeat Fish Day when it’s not held in colihaut every year.
cancell and save for a later date instead of making a lost
well hold it after elections or on a saturday where there are no rallies thats all wi….. smh….
I would advise you to move it to the following Sunday, that way you will get all the foreigners who come down to vote to enjoy the FISH DAY
Sad
