Former national basketball player, Stephen “Homo” Bellot of Grand Bay, has died.
He passed away on Thursday April 26.
Stephen began playing basketball at the tender age of 12 with the neighbourhood boys like Lambert Henderson and Perez. By 15 he had made it to the Pro’s Junior team and by seventeen Stephen was playing on the Dominica youth team. That same year he was drafted by the Pros and subsequently made it to the National Basketball team…all in a year’s work.
His exceptional talent saw him represent Dominica for six years on the national team before migrating to Guadeloupe where he continued to excel in the sport, making it to the Guadeloupe national team in quick time.
While there, he was instrumental in organizing trips for his former team, Pros, to Guadeloupe for games. He also coached the senior team he was part of and the woman’s team of the basketball club to which he belonged.
During his six year stint with the Dominica National basketball team, Stephen travelled to Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Martinique and to the first CARICOM championship tournament in Guyana.
Upon his return from Guadeloupe, he travelled with the Pros to the island of St. Lucia twice for inter island games. He also organized for a youth team he coached to travel to Guadeloupe for competition.
Stephen coached basketball in Pichelin and Dubique and was instrumental in bringing basketball to the community of Soufriere. He also coached the Grand Bay women’s team among others for a period of time.
Stephen Bellot has contributed significantly to the development of the sport of basketball throughout his life.
He was 52 years old.
Sadly, another Mabouchez friend and legend has left us, he coached me on the pros junior team as “heater”-my condolences to cos Dave and the rest of the family, Jehovah’s blessings…….
Man that was so shocking and sad. People who knew homo personally know exactly what the lost. It’s tough to swallow but life goes on.

A loved one gone is never forgotten. Memories remain.
HOMO…..It is very sad to hear you have left us. Condolence to your family in this time of grief
I remember playing B/ball at the G/Bay churhyard come rain or hot sun. These were fun memories for me.
I view of what you have done for others in developing their game and the game of b/ball itself I believe something should be done to honour you,….The setting up of a foundation, a plaque etc
You shall be remembered
DNO Admin, Who issued that Press Release? I think that you shld state the source. Thanks.
“Homo” may have gone to the great beyond, to join some of this other Grand Bay b/ballers like Pierre-O and Lamby. Those of us who watched him play at Windsor Park, or played against him, or refereed games that he played for the Pros, won’t ever forget his cool composure, the “cool” way he dribled the ball up the court, and of course that mega 3-pointer he scored from about half-line!!
RIP my brother and my condolences to his family, close friends and the people of Sout’ City… The home of the first basketball team from southern Dominica.
Another legend gone again. Rest In Peace Homo. You taught me alot in basketball. May the Lord keep your family together during such difficult time. Gone but not forgotten. True Legend. R.I.P
Unquestionably,Homo you will be remembered by all. R.I.P.
He was one in a million & I am very lucky to have been a close friend. Lamby & Pierro, now Homo. REST IN PERFECT PEACE our BROTHERS – your good works will never be forgotten. ONE LOVE
Now you all got every kind of nice comments to say about a dead man. Majority of you all never said them to him when he was alive. Best condolences are sent to his family and stop that them he was a nice, discipline man and good basketball player garbage. NO SENSE!!! HE CANNOT HEAR NOW!!!
XXXXXXX
Many did not know him but it is as a mark of respect to him and his family. We are all human beings; all in it. One day our turn will come and people will be making the same statements. I do not know him and I will be offering my condolence to his family. He was a son of the soil who excelled in his undertakings. He deserves it. You should know that he has touched the hearts of many.
Furthermore, you never know what is occurring in eternity. Who knows? God may be giving the departed a view and a listening one to see, hear and know what is being said about him. I have always said that in their spiritual world they know who truly liked them or not.
You are chastising people for doing good? Be considerate, fair, intelligent and grow up. We are all fellow Dominicans wherever we may reside whether we know each other or not. All brothers and sisters in Our Lord Jesus Christ. You are in dire need of mortal and spiritual enlightenment.
In effect, we are not strangers as much as some people would think. Genuine Christians do not think in this manner. May his soul rest in peace. We leave the rest to God.
I think that was thoughtless comment and u should take that “crap” back, we all knew him and told him how great he was, I always made some time to visit with him whenever i back in DA.
sad day for south city, he truly played his part with great discipline ,when ever we talk about b ball in grandbay.your name and the church yard will be remenbered.may your soul rest in peace, looking down at the basket ball court.

No matter how great a team we were, he was always the man to watch whenever Cardinals played Pros. He was a kool player, not fancy but very consistent, and always gets the job done. Always pleasant and hardly got angry. Today I look at basketball and I am unable to see players as good as Homo and others who played in his time. Have a good rest brother.
What a baller this humble man was, Homo you will be missed. you can’t talk about Pros without mentioning his name, the Moore brothers are so sadden by that news. I remember the good times we had in ST.LUCIA, he was such a cool guy. May his soul RIP and may his family find comfort in their loss.

That’s right. Homo was one of the first batch of b-ball players on the court by the church in those days. He was on Pros Juniour when they won the championship. Homo, Yout, Balo Fontaine Tra Casimir, Hyram from Lawee Deyere, Peter Pokeson Blondell from Mabouche and Batu Bonti Liverpool was the captain.
Big up hyram and all the mentioned because these guys tried to change the face of grand bay and tried to bring more positive vibes about our sweet village.

he sould have gotten his awards before he died
i hope we recognise others and learn our lessson
its nice to hear a great stroy from grandbay again
i agree with you there . i am from Bagatelle and i am in my late 30’s and i have never heard of him . i always say give the people their roses while they a alive so they can smell it, not when they die .And there are many more like him out there.
@ my sweet dominica: The possibility that the face of PROS players had already changed. younger guys came on. This was not professional sports these guys kept jobs and had to fend for their family – people migrate. If you read you will have noticed that he coached in Guadeloupe and elsewhere. You are from BAGATELLE there was no high school in GrandBay at the time.
I would go watch PROS play on Sunday I love basketball not because of TV because I watched them as a child. Pokeson, Freeda, Fish, Hyram, Moore brothers, Yout, Marmas (RIP), Homo(RIP), Teacher Lambert (RIP) – Sorry for their NICK names
100% baCK UP. IM FROM SOUTH AND FIRST TIME I HEARING ABOUT MR
