Garbage in Pottersville irks residents

Residents say the garbage has been uncollected for months

Residents of Pottersville have expressed frustration at the accumulation of garbage and debris in their community, especially where the Berean Church once stood.

Residents said the massive pile-up, which contains large appliances as well as discarded building materials, has been an eyesore for months.

A resident told Dominica News Online that the matter was reported to the Roseau City Council but the council said it should be referred to Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC).

It was then reported to the DSWMC but no action has yet been taken, according to the resident.

When contacted, Collection Manager at DSWMC, Shamara Daisy, stated that she was only recently informed of the situation and insisted that the corporation is working towards clearing the mass.

However, Daisy pointed out that the site is not a point for collecting garbage and thus would not routinely be scanned.

“That area is not a collection point, so the truck will not be going in that area; so it’s only when somebody called and said that that was happening, that is how we found out,” she stated.

She advised that members of the public must be more mindful of garbage collection sites, to avoid further pollution in their communities.

“They should not be dumping in that area because it hasn’t been a collection point for years now,” Daisy said.

Welcome to Dominica, tourists, where people dump their rubbish in the so-called ‘Nature Isle’ wherever ever they want, and then somehow blame it on the government

Honest question. Does Roseau have a mayor? Just wondering. I never hear him speak at all. It was Cecile Joseph, but is he still the mayor? If there is a mayor in Roseau, are they doing anything for Roseau?

ADMIN: The current mayor is Irene John.

Yes, Roseau does have a mayor in the shape of Irene John, a retired civil servant but what exactly she does for Roseau I don’t know. I am not saying this out of spite. I simply am not aware of any actions she undertakes on behalf of the city. She does not appear to have any presence.

Its disgusting and unsanitary to have trash out in open like that, especially so close to the water supply.

CLEAN IT UP! I don’t care who saw it when, the city needs to address the issue immediately and work with the residents to get them to stop dumping waste as well as with DSWMC to get them to collect the trash.

Then maybe put something beautiful or useful there, so people stop bringing trash to that site.

They know very well they should not dump garbage there. That is an eyesore. Dominicans have a bad habit. They dump garbage anywhere with no regard for their country. I want to see whats going to happen when that law against plastics and styrofoam passes what they will do. Do like people in my community. Call solid waste and remind them that garbage has not been collected in our area and let them come clear it up.

Only in FAILED STATES this goes on for months. Too many square pegs in round holes. These incompetent officers are always equipped with frivolous excuses. Dominica have become a land where misery abounds, a land where you are awarded plaques and ‘big jobs’ for ignorance and incompetence. It’s difficult to maintain your sanity in such a poorly governed place. In Dominica, stress and sorrow has become one’s best friend. Can’t escape the depressed feelings no matter how hard you try to look on the bright side of life.

People should be notified by posted signs this is not a legal dumping site, and violators will be fined if caught dumping. They should also be given some sort of community service sentence and or further prosecuted. Let us then see who will be dumping, with all the video surveillance there is today.

Good morning. Put together a community group, check the laws and regulations on garbage collection in your area, and file a legal suit against the one or ones responsible, be it a private or government agency. Maybe get after them all. Good luck Ms. Ifield.

  19. July 31, 2018

After close examination, I don’t see any legs on the garbage. So it is a mystery how it actually got there.. :-D

So whilst you are at it why don’t you let the people of that area know where is their collection point? It is obvious they do not know. Or where we can access a list of collection points in the country? That would be important informatoin

Ridiculous argument that “..the site is not a point for collecting garbage and thus would not routinely be scanned.”

The House of Assembly continues to be a point for collecting garbage but it is never scanned.

People need to be fined if caught for illegal dumping, use the money for clean-up. Makes a fine sight for tourists who when back home will tell their friends how dirty the place is, in this internet age the word will move very quickly and people planning a vacation will scratch Dominica off their list. Who wants to go on vacation to look at garbage?

Upon entrance to the climate resilient city of Roseau, this is the welcoming sight that tourist get to see. Our neighboring islands can smell our nastiness and poverty from overseas. Then when laborats hear of stuff like Sk Kitts record breaking tourism figures and St Lucia million capacity airport, Laborats wanna talk about “soon we’ll get there”? Castries st Lucia doesn’t look like this and neither would there population tolerate such nonsense from their government. In all d travel Skeritt traveling, doesn’t he take a page from their book and try to make his country more like the developed things he sees overseas? If is not a proper solid waste system Dominca can have is a climate resilient country we can build? Keep on dreaming. Sarckway sor sor laborats
