As controversy continues to swirl over the arrest of two gay men in Dominica reports have surfaced that they were actually engaged in sex on the balcony of the ship that was docked in Roseau last week.
Gay website Queerty.com. published what it called an ‘exclusive firsthand account’ of the incident when Dennis Mayer and John Hart of Palm Springs, were arrested on buggery charges.
According to the website a fellow cruise passenger gave the following account of the incident:
“My boyfriend and I, and a busload of other guys, did see what was happening on the balcony of the Celebrity Summit as we waited for our excursion to depart.
At first, I wasn’t paying attention, until I noticed a few Dominican females near the security gate of the pier where the ship docked, waving their arms and hands towards the ship, and talking loudly about something on the ship. The others on board the bus also looked, and we noticed one, then two guys on the balcony walking around naked. My first thought was, ‘If we can see them, can they see us?’
The ruckus at the dock became more excited when it appeared, at first to me, that they were engaging in oral sex. The two guys in front of me then said, ‘No, they are f*****ng!’ As I leaned forward in my seat, I noticed that they were f****ng, and in a standing position. It was very, very obvious that they were engaged in f****ng. We were not that far away from the ship, maybe one half to three quarters the length of a football field. Again, did they know we could see them?”
The alleged eyewitness account continues:
“When the girls pointed to the balcony for the police officer to see, he then, himself, noticed the guys f*****ng. The police officer started to walk towards the ship, as other police officers also started to observe the action on the balcony. The balcony was just above Deck 5, where the lifeboats are stored, and only two or three staterooms from the elevator banks, on the port side of the Celebrity Summit facing the town.
As the police officer walked, then stopped, then walked again toward the ship, the two guys on the balcony were still f*****ng. By this time, we could see many people on the pier and onshore taking photos of the action taking place on the balcony.
As the police officer was walking towards the ship, many of us were thinking that these two guys would soon be going home. It’s the notion of f*****ng in plain view of those on the ground that was the shocking thing. It doesn’t have to be a gay thing since straight couples shouldn’t be doing that as well.”
The charge of buggery was eventually dropped and the men were charged with indecent exposure and fined EC$2,400.00 each.
They left the island last week Thursday.

Indecent exposure is indecent exposure. Performing sex in public is also part of indecent exposure. It is too bad that the other charge was dropped for it is a serious one. This article should be sent to the international Media which should clarify the situation.
Those men were not ashamed of their lewd acts. Instead they lambasted Dominica saying that they were treated horribly. This is all they could say but nothing was mentioned about their sex acts. They projected that they have no personal respect for themselves and for others.

This is my opinion on the matter. I do believe that the guys were being defiant. I do beleive that they knew Dominica’s stand on homosexuality as it relate to the law of the land. I do believe that they were well informed and all these stories that the white man was telling on the america news is a lie. The tow men meant to openly defy the countries law. Its like all you doh want gay well look it in your face. There was no reason for them to do their business openly like that unless they wanted to prove a point. Looking a a mountain in its tranquility would propel someone to read a book, admire nature etc not have sex in the open.

If all these witnesses where watching and taking photos. Then I want to know, why not a single photo made its way into the court, to have the charge of buggery stand. One of these witness could have told the court what they saw. First hand witness goes a long way, when charging people with a crime. Because to substantiate such evidence takes time and we really didn’t want these guys here causing international outcry while they play the gay persecution card. You can’t just bring a photo to court it has to be analyzed and deemed authentic as opposed to being a picture edited in photoshop, gimp or another image editing program. At the end of they day they’re out at least 2 gran US (1800 in fines plus whatever they paid their lawyer). Now let’s move on because this isn’t news anymore since we already knew they were having intercourse and they’re gone.

I appreciate the report to provide more evidence….but I hate to say it it still has me wondering a few things.
Anyway, this is a past issue that has been dealt with so let’s all try to learn from this unfortunate incident, move on and help promote our island.
I think that DNO should start a poll asking about homophobia in Dominica. It is my opinion that many of us hide behind the fact that the two men in question committed a crime.
If there had been no such incident, just 2,000 gay men hugging, kissing and holding hands in our streets, I doubt that we would have behaved “as normal”. Many of us would have been appalled as if they were having sex in public.

Someone you would think would not break the law..These guys know what they were doing was WRONG..Had it been a man a woman, the couple would have still gotten arrested..Engaging in sexual activity in PUBLIC is just simply wrong or illegal!!!

@Jamin… you are right, but they having sex (or not) really wasn’t an issue for me, especially since they weren’t even charged for that crime. Now that another tourist has confirmed that they were fully engaged in buggery I do not feel any better about the situation.
What always concerned me was the perception we gave the world by (1) having the buggery law on our books in the first place and (2) what some have described as “clamoring” and alleged mobbing of the cruise ship berth and the court house.
Add in name-calling and the alleged refusal of a few bus drivers to go on tours and we’re depicted as a homophobic country. Is that the image we want out there?

Very well put! I have no issue with the two men being arrested for indecent behavior in public, same as if it had been a hetero couple. But the blatant gay bashing, antediluvian buggery laws, and ridiculous moralizing about gays in general appalled me. It makes Dominica appear incredibly backward and narrow-minded.
Those two clowns deserved to be arrested and fined. They were either stupid beyond belief or deliberately trying to offend by their actions and have no complaint coming about being punished for their actions – but not for being gay. They didn’t choose to be gay, but the did choose to commit an offense. Punish the act. Don’t punish the whole gay population by making sexual orientation a crime in itself.

I think people should read your link to see what other people are saying. I am totally against that lifestyle, but who am I to judge. It was nice to see that people both straight and gay saw this act for what it was BREAKING THE LAW and not a PERSECUTION of gays.

Well well, if that is the case then hmmmm. And yes people need to understand that this is not about not liking gays. Its wrong…whether it was gay couple or not. And its good to have passengers like this tell the world what actually happened cause the said men themselves are telling their own stories and trying to put a bad light on us. I saw on the USA news that they said they were paraded around town. SMH!!

Now to all those Dominican, who cannot stop but criticize their own country and fellowmen as well as those foreigners who bash our beautiful Country,STOP your WRONGFUL accusations admit that you like those men were wrong and repent.
