A member of the US-based Parents Family and Friends for Lesbians and Gays (P-Flag), John Otto, in Philadelphia, has blasted the Roman Catholic Church in the United States for what he claims is “unequal treatment” and Church hypocrisy against lesbians and Gays.
Otto was speaking to journalists who were on a US familiarization tour on gay and lesbian issues, including DNO’s Carlisle Jno Baptiste.
“I have two (2) sons and I have been a practicing and devoted member of the Catholic Church for all my life but for two years plus now, I have stayed away from the Church,” he told the foreign journalists.
“I am mad with the Church….I grew up in the faith and expected them to give me some support. I have spoken to my local priest about the matter he is very conservative and says he supports the Church’s views and doctrines as it relates to “same sex marriage,” Otto stated.
According to him, the priest did not try at all to sway him in any way as to his views but did say that he “respects my position”.
“He told me that nothing is wrong with my son and God still loves him and he was happy that I was there with him to give family support,” Otto remarked.
He stated that there have been lots of problems within the Church itself over the years but they (the Catholic Church) are just “hypocritical” about the same sex marriage and gay and lesbian issues.
“The Church can do much better than that, they are selective on issues and when it suits them they speak out on others. “It is wrong and I am not happy about it….I no longer go to church I consider myself a “Christian,” Otto stated while expressing his dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church in the United States.
He said his son has had a hard time at school, was “bullied” and even went through severe depression after disclosing that he was “gay”.
According to Otto, his decision and views are very personal since it’s all about rights of spouse, medical benefits, survivor benefit and the like.
He says P-Flag is not a political organization and has no religious leanings.
“We are all for a common purpose and that is to support our son or daughter who is “gay” or “lesbian”.
Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is described as a socio-political group of family members and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.
P-FLAG has more than 350 affiliates throughout the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 11 other countries.
The organization has been in existence now for over 40 years.
The fact that a man has a son who has “come out” does not mean he should expect the Roman Catholic Church which claims a history of 2,000 years to change its position on homosexuality. While I do not agree with much of the theology and practices of the Catholic Church I must admit its stance on homosexuality is based upon the clear teachings of the Holy Scriptures. Romans 1:21-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:9-10, and Jude vs. 7. This is the Christian position not only the Roman Catholic position and is held by all those who follow the historic faith. Civilizations that accepted homosexuality as normal did not do well. Greece was famous for its man-boy sex before it fell to the Romans. One historian said “Rome conquered Greece with its military but Greece brought Rome down by its immorality.” A health care professional who was himself a homosexual told me “All alcoholics are not homosexuals but all homosexuals are alcoholics.” I do not agree with this statement but he seemed to be sincere. We do know there is an higher rate of mental health issues among homosexuals and more suicides. Statistics show homosexuals have a shorter life span. The good news is homosexuals who want to change and make the effort to change can change. Genuine conversion to Christ (not to a creed or a religion) followed by qualified Christian counselling has marked the beginning of a new life for many. We do not help our loved ones by affirming the in the thing that is desroying them. Those with a son or daughter who is involved in homosexuality are too close to the problem to be able to be objective. Their emotional ivolvement leaves the vunerable to gay activists and organizations like P-Flag. But for those who have a head clear enough to think rationally I hope they wiil (a) hear the voice of God (the Holy Scriptures) and/or (b) consider the science that is available. Unfortunately when people turn God off they lose the ability to apprecate science as well. St. Paul in his day commented on this in Romans 1:21 where he wrote “… when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, … and their foolish heart was darkened.” For those who are able to evaluate the facts I recommend the book HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE POLITICS OF TRUTH by Dr. Jeffrey Satinover, M.D. Dr. Satinover has practiced psychiatry for over twenty years. To be honest I don’t think anyone cares about what gay people do. How they live or anything. If the. Catholic church does not support your sexual preference then start your own church. What you say is absolutely right. Do you know why homosexual activists throw words at us like “hate” and “homophobic” that are completely out of context and do not apply? It is because they know they do not have the facts on their side. In a Gay Pride Parade what do they do? Instead of drawing our attention to the accomplishments of gay people in the arts and sciences they march gays and lesbians down the street with as little clothes on as the law will allow, and roll open trucks by with men wrapped around men and women wrapped around women. A man comes down the centre of the road in fishnet stockings with a whip in one hand and a man on a leash in the other hand. That’s their way of telling us their lifetsyle is normal? But the worst is only now coming to light. When people cross the line out of normal human relationships into this dark world of perversion they are frequently looking for something new and different. The temptation is always there to take things to the next level. That is why so many homosexuals are found involved in behaviour so gross – so scary – so criminal – I will not even mention it here. Right here in the UK we are – and by we I mean the Anglican and Catholic church – battling against the legalisation of gay marriage by 2015. The sacrament of holy martrimony is an institution that is sacred and the invention of the Holy Church so why do homosexuals want to be ‘married’ when they lambaste and criticize the Church for everything else? I often question why members of the GLBT community and their supporters demand that everyone should accept / respect their point of view and lifestyle as a matter of human rights, whereas they are not prepared to respect the rights of others who do not share their point of view and lifestyle.
I am a strong advocate of principle of separation of religion and state. Whereas I do not support the ideals of the GLBT community based on my religious upbringing, I respect their right to advocate their point of view with the hope that they are prepared to respect my right not to accept theirs. I do not support discrimination of individuals or a group of individuals based on what they believe. However, certain human activities must be regulated by the State and others left to the church. In some cases the law and morality may merge but in other cases they must remain far apart as day and night.
What are human rights? What makes them universal? Is it because the US and EU say so? No! Human rights are inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. How does one compare the right to life, for instance, with the right to be gay? What if the Americans pass a law that it is legal for a man to marry his cat, should this legal right in America become a universal right?
The issue that often boggles my mind is whether gay rights are really human rights or universal rights and conversely whether human rights include gay rights? According to the arguments being advanced by the GLBT community, the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama they are all the same. Mrs. Clinton has directed all U.S. agencies to “promote and protect” the rights of gay people, and challenged nations around the world to recognize that human rights includes gays rights. This argument has its supporters on both sides. However, it is clear that the US invitation to media personnel is part of its active efforts to spread its position around the world. Traditionally, the US has always used aid and funding of projects to spread its ideology as it did against communism and the so-call wars on terror and drugs.
From the perspective of the State, perhaps there should not be any discrimination against guys but that should be different from the position of the church. This, therefore, is my ambiguous position that is informed by the theory of positivism, which states that law cannot draw its legitimacy from an alliance with morality. The issue of whether gays should have equal rights is a legal issue- not a religious one. Law should possess its own rationality, independent of the teaching of the church and morality. If and when we allow politicians to fuse the law and morality, this undermines the rationality of law itself. For that reason, I do not support the position of the United Sates in forcing the acceptance of gay rights as a universal fundamental right- putting aside the issue of differences in cultures and religious teachings around the world.
In light of the above, the GLBT should not expect the support of the church. I can understand the expectation of the GLBT community to have the full support of the president of the United States but not the church. The church is responsible for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which condemns sins. (all sins). As per the teaching of the church (irrespective of the mistakes of some of its leaders and followers) is that homosexuality is sinful. The church cannot be for and against the commission of sins. We are taught that God loves all of us irrespective of sex, gender, colour or sexual orientation but he does not like our sins. The church cannot do better than it is doing by condemning the act homosexuality. I have difficulty accepting that one is preaching the gospel and at the same time openly and actively promoting homosexuality. The state ought not concern itself with sins of citizens but compliance with the laws of the state. Hillary and Obama could advocate for gay rights and for equal treatment before the law but they should not push this down the throat of the church. Sorry!! I do not dislike or disrespect gays. I respectfully disagree with their lifestyle and aggressive agenda. This is just my view and I hold steadfast to it. If you feel so and it was stated, then everything you eat should be in moderation. You do not have to eat a big piece. Eat chicken once or twice a week; fish, meat, liver (if you like this one), shrimps, if you can get them and so on. You do not have to eat the same thing day after day. I love a variety. If you clean/wash them, season them very well with an ample amount of garlic, onions and lemon, then cook, bake, broil or roast, it should not affect you or anyone.
