When visitors to Dominica from Germany lost their bag at the Titou Gorge recently, little did they know that they would get it back intact with all their valuables untouched.

Kilian Pankert and his family, who were guests at the Birdwatchers Rainforest Cottage in Sylvania, property of Harrigan and Tina Alexander, made it all the way to Portsmouth on Wednesday to thank their good samaritan Thomas Dixon for his good gesture.

Apparently the visitors had visited Titou Gorge and lost their bag. The bag contained money, credit cards, ID and an iPhone.

The bag was found by Dixon who promptly took it to police headquarters in Roseau.

The police began making calls in attempts to locate the owner of the bag.

Tina Alexander was contacted and she, in turn, contacted neighbours at Birdwatchers Rainforest Cottage, Fiona and Tony Xavier.

The two then drove to the cottage to alert the visitors their bag had been located.

The visitors were impressed.

“We are so happy that we got it back and nothing was lost. We’re really impressed about how honest, helpful and friendly the people are here,” they said.

Alexander said, “Amazingly they did not know they had lost it until the police called us and we contacted the neighbours up there and had them go round to tell them. Even their iPhone was in the bag! – That’s why I love Dominica.”

Dixon, Dixon, Dixon….I should have known! A man of real integrity. I first met Mr. Thomas Dixon at Ross back in 2000, which was before the paved road from Rousseau to Portsmouth and other infrastructure. I was a young man from the U.S. who was adventurous and he was a young man from Guadeloupe, who had made his home in Dominica and was wise beyond his years. We first met at the school gym. I told him I wanted to learn all about Dominica. After a long pause, he said on one condition. I said, what? He asked me how do you act as a guest in someone’s home? I said, with respect. He then said in his then typical response, NO PROBLEM, you’re in good hands. We soon became good friends. He taught me how to move and how not to move on the Island. He not only showed me the breath taking beauty of Dominica, but also taught me the culture of the Dominican people of which I will always respect. I even met my wife of 15 years there! You’re the Best Bro!

  3. “Let this story go out of Dominica and around the world on DNO :!: This is the Dominica you want potential tourists to know about :!:” Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill”

Reverend Hill I have to let you know, on behalf of us in Dominica–who have accepted your participation, if not all of us–that we appreciate you interest in the welfare of our Dominica and her people; we thank you so much for your interest!

As a man of God, you know that He has work for you/us to do in both Ministry and Mission. Your work with us, Dominicans, is part of your Mission from God, thank you for allowing Him to do this work through you for the sake of our people, who needs Him.

You and I both know that there will be “negative respondents”, but we also know that God is in charge; His work must be fulfilled, Just continue to do what He calls you to do–for His glory. ,

  4. DNO without you we may not have heard of this beautiful story –especially us in the Diaspora.

I am aware that Mr. Thomas Dixon is the hero of the story and yes indeed! He played a marvelous role; but without you that beautiful story could have remained untold to the world–so you are the reason for its highlight; just look at all of these positive comments here–praise God!

Thank you so very much! And is there any chance that you could have one for each month of the rest of 2016? Good heavens!

They must have placed their bag down and forgot it. How could they? Did one of them not realize that he was missing something in his hand?
They were fortunate that someone honest got it. This man is to be highly commended and with a citation.
They are fortunate that they were nowhere that brazen thief in Roseau. They would never get it. I hope this one is caught soon.

”Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.” (St. Paul in Philippians 4:8)

It is refreshing to read good news. In spite of all the bad in our world today, and all the crime that gets reported by the media, there are still good people in society.

Here we have an article about honest people in various walks of life taking time to go out of their way to help somebody who would be in great distress and was about to suffer significant loss.

This is not about one person alone. It is about a co-ordinated effort of various honest people of good will each doing the right thing.

Let this story go out of Dominica and around the world on DNO :!: This is the Dominica you want potential tourists to know about :!:

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill…

Nice going Reverend Hill! And as a Dominican, on behalf of fellow Dominicans I say thank you for a beautiful compliment.

I agree with you, this is the Dominica we want the world to know, and yes she is just that. If only our negative minded people would let her be, and to show gratitude and praise to God for His blessed gift to us!

To the same extent that we deliver praise and commendations to Mr. Dixon, we should also dispense stern verbal chastisement and stiff corporal punishment to villains, thus establishing the basis for public policy (that which we stand for). Mr. Dixon did not have to return the items but he did so ___therefor, ‘kudos’ to him; to the same extent, killers does not have the right or freedom to kill the innocent; conversely let punishment be their reward. My conclusion is based on the premise that the real meaning of the word ‘freedom’ is the ability to do what one ought to do and not do what one ought NOT TO DO.
It is expedient that a wicked man be punished, as that a sick man be cured by a physician; for all chastisement is a form of medicine.
Mr. Dixon you are have earned the title, the ‘Good Samaritan’.

Dixon is a dear friend of mine. I have known him for many years now through Ross. Dixon is a credit to himself and Dominica because this is were he lives. However he is not Dominican but from Guadeloupe… From
Reading all the terrible events to plight Dominica lately (murders, theft, rape… Committed by Dominicans against foreigners and domestics), I am not sure these tourists would have gotten their bag back if not for an honest Guadeloupean man…. food for thought !

I was once travelling from the airport to Roseau and my wallet fell out of my coat’s pocket. The wallet was returned promptly with all its content the morning after by the taxi driver. Great and solid guy and probably representing the good majority of Dominica’s population.

That’s good news! That’s the type of message we need to send to visitors. We need to stop making our visitors think we don’t like them, because we do. What we do not like is the idea of Skerrit selling our land and deplomatic passport to just about anyone, while he secures a bright future for his family in the USA.
