Gov’t committed to eradicating pit latrines in Dominica

pit latrinePrime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said there is a need to eradicate pit latrines in Dominica despite the ravages of Tropical Storm Erika.

On Monday, the Mahaut Village Council received $275,000 for sanitary washrooms in the district from Skerrit, who is also Finance Minister.

“We need to eradicate pit latrines in Dominica and notwithstanding the challenges which we are experiencing from Tropical Storm Erika, we are committed to continuing that project… So the Mahaut area will receive in excess of $275,000,” he stated.

He noted that the constituency on Monday received “four dollars short of $1-million for various interventions” including road rehabilitation and youth entrepreneurship.

“So, let us continue to work together,” he stated.

He said residents of the Mahaut constituency will benefit not only from the systematic and consistent road rehabilitation but from proper sanitation as well.

“I have walked every part of Mahaut and I knew the condition of the constituency when we came in. If every one of us is honest with ourselves, we will admit that Hon Rayburn Blackmoore and the DLP have done tremendous work here in this constituency,” Skerrit said.

I suppose this article was not explicit. The plan may be to eradicate pit latrines for a better “toilet – washroom” one which flushes and with a bathroom sink/basin for washing hands. I assume this would be a better and proper replacement for the pit latrines. Anyone of the readers ever thought of that?

I had some dasheen trees planted 10\’ from our pit toilet, and when I would sell my Dasheen at the market my customers would always tell me that my Dasheen was the best they ever ate. Full proof organic dasheen. I\’m not getting rid of my pit. No PM or AM making me \”eradicate\” it. It\’s my blasted property!!!!!

Those people do not know about it. For health reasons, you should not grow edible foods near it. Is the government not aware of it? If I know about it I would not purchase your Dasheen.

I have been saying and will emphasis again that this corrupt Skerrit Labour party regime know nothing of social development and the impact of decent policy in creating more poverty in the minds and environments of vulnerable and desperate people. A place like Mahaut, strategically located we have A DULL Prime Minister now talking about communal public convenience in 2016. What madness thinking is this? This again is an attempt to quiet and buy poor and desperate people that “something” anything to quiet and appease them that “something “is happening whereas this is fast food politics with a diet to poison the minds of vulnerable people living in a filth of labour politics.

All well and good to improve sanitation facilities and in so doing, achieving the MDG, Goal 7 in Ensuring Environmental Sustainability. However if we truly understand the goal’s principle then we see that this so called war on pit latrine is yet other means of breeding on the ignorance of the populace and a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    http://mdgs.un.org/unsd/mdg/Metadata.aspx?IndicatorId=31
According to the UN’s definition “The proportion of the population using an improved sanitation facility, total, urban, rural, is the percentage of the population with access to facilities that hygienically separate human excreta from human contact. Improved facilities include flush/pour flush toilets or latrines connected to a sewer, -septic tank, or -pit, ventilated improved pit latrines, pit latrines with a slab or platform of any material which covers the pit entirely, except for the drop hole and composting toilets/latrines.

How the heck does a government take up the respondibility of eradicating Pit Latrines. As soon as people begin to do better they will upgrade their trips to poopville. It was in the 80’s and 90 that we got rid of the most pit toilets.it was simply because the peolle were more financially independent. Today it is a toulet per vote

In 2013 The Roosevelt Skerrit said he got money from ALBA to eradicate pit toilets and it is 2016 and he comes back with his “pit toilet talk” Is it that Dominicans are known to fall for this “Pit Toilet” chat from this machinery of deception.

Speaking negatively about a good initiative is the number one sign of ignorance, you turn the topic into some thing else to give you an excuse to hate and criticize.

The concept of pit latrines is a sanitary issue as well as providing running water in every home. You are not in jungle and there is no need for it. it causes diseases.
No one in Dominica is so poor they cannot have running water in their homes or a toilet. If that’s the case then you should move back in with your parents and shut your mouth.
Its not the government job to make people rich, people poor in DA either because they lazy or they stupid, they chase women and alcohol and party more than they focus on their future, investing in their minds, closing their mouth, opening their eyes and ears.
You cannot say its racism because its a black country so you blame the government… the only person to blame is you.

Skerrit, to eradicate pit latrine just add value added tax on our poopoo and you will see how fast pit latrine or any toilet will be eradicated. And you know what, the way I see Dominica heading there I will not at all be surprised to hear you add some type of poopoo tax on us, just as Israel did when their evil king made life so difficult for the people, to the point that mothers had to kill and eat their children and dove poopoo got so expensive -2 kings 6:25-29. There are lots of similarities between that evil king back then and our current prime minister. That evil king had bought the prohets of God, as we see in Dominica toad with the evangelist, pastors, priests and bishop all bought and, back then the king had created a culture where the people had to look to him for their next meal, as seen in 2 kings 6:26-27, just as we see in Dominica today with Skerrit. So just wait and we will see a poopoo tax added that will force us to not poopoo, and pit latrine will be eradicated

This is great news but it would be greater if the gov’t would make it a priority for the sick elderly and handicaps to get these toilets first.I saw an old lady with one leg and her husband is very sick in bed ,it is too difficult for this little old lady to struggle with a stick on one leg to through a potty every day many times per day,i am sure there are more and i hope that the public will let the gov’t know who they are …
