Gov’t promoting a culture of self-reliance – Minister Gloria Shillingford

Minister Shillingford

While opinions differ for many on the opposition side, Minster for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs Gloria Shillingford has said that the government is promoting a culture of self-reliance as oppose to dependency.

Speaking during the opening of the 32nd Independence Celebrations on Saturday at the Old Mill Cultural Center, Shillingford stated that government is also stressing the importance of values such as unity volunteerism, and community spirit.

“We are saying that we will equip you with the means to advance yourself and provide support mechanisms to facilitate the achievement of your goals.

“However, the onus is upon you, citizens of Dominica to take advantage of these opportunities so that you can improve your standard of living to improve the development f your communities and thereby take this country to the next level,” she stated.

Are you all trying to subdue the monster that you created? It’s too late. The dependency syndrome to get votes will have to be continued if you want to remain in power. You know how most of our people think-THE DAY YOU CANNOT DO FOR ME OR GIVE ME, YOU HAVE NEVER DONE OR GIVEN BEFORE.Put that in your pipe and smoke it.SELF RELIANCE-MY FOOT.That’s how it was before remember?Until you all came along.

Your government has created a dependency syndrome and now you want to tie people hands?Who made people believe that they no longer have to work, they just have to beg?Too much on your hands now?

@Margeret Rose: Dont settle for the basics, expect more from your representative; that is the only way you will get what you deserve in your communities. Move on.

Govt.s these days are trying to make people dependent on them so that they can completely control them and everything that they have.
People have to remember that they ARE the govt. and that they have to only give power to people that will facilitate their will. People have to be willing to participate and help each other, otherwise nobody here gets ahead.

  9. More fancy speeches
    September 28, 2010

Dominicans it’s another year of fancy speeches from those Ministers. How many Ministers and advisers in that Big Govt. sucking up tax payers money with nothing to show. 32 years of Independence Celebrations, yet there is no vision, no forward movement as far as our Economic Independence and interdependence are concerned. Is the Minister being frank with Dominicans that government is stressing the importance of values? Check your cupboards and you would see.

What about all those allegations and factual revelations about Bin Bobol, fertilizer Bobol, Villas, acquisition of huge assets by people in public office, corrupt practices, lack of accountability and transparency with National projects and other Govt. business, disrespect for our constitution and……. so much more? The allegations of theft and huge assets obtained in quick time by some cannot even be refuted by those in Public Office. Our good moral values have gone down the drain. It’s evident in the increase in crimes, violence, hatred. Now, WRONG IS RIGHT AND RIGHT IS WRONG. To be TRUTHFUL AND HONEST are almost crimes. Begging mentality has been institutionalized and prevails. The values of working hard to earn a living eludes us and Minister talk about Govt. stressing VALUES?

Community spirit and togetherness are at an all time low. People no longer trust their Govt. officials. The situations with the community of Layou with the building of the asphalt Plant close to their community speaks volumes. People do not come first anymore in the development process. Everything is done to facilitate the foreigner and ‘BIG Man’ They have the influence of money, Big business and assets.

What do the ordinary people in the communities have? The majority are becoming poorer while the few are getting richer. Their standard of living of the rural folks has deteriorated considerably. Those people were once very productive in the agricultural field in particular. What has happened? Those nice speeches before have not solved their burning problems, neither will it this year of our Political Independence. What we need is the Vision, honesty, integrity and Political will to change for the better.

Well she is living in Dominica and trying to help us make a difference, unlike the last Parl. Rep. who lived and worked in The USA and was still getting a Salary from us the tax payers in Dominica. What did he ever do for Wesley?

The Minister should list the “support mechanisms” that her government and Ministry have in place or plans to put in place. The government is feeling the pressure that they cannot sustain the level on the dependency they created in the country and are trying to back-track on the monster they created. This is just lip service. What is the govenment putting in place to improve that don’t care attitude of resident who at this time will do almost anything for their basic survival. They dont have a plan but just winging it as they go along.

    My dear Madam Minister

Are you living in Dominica? Or are you on another planet?
My God or are you just plain mad!!!!!!
What could be more obvious than my government promoting begging
    and dependency on it?

You all suck up to the Chinese – but remember and live the Chinese proverb
“GIVE A MAN A FISH AND YOU FEED HIM FOR A DAY; TEACH A MAN TO
FISH AND YOU FEED HIM FOR LIFE”

In providing the “support mechanisms” we SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BEG
AND PLAY LABOURITE TO GET ASSISTANCE.

STOP USING OUR TAX MONEY AGAINST US WHEN IT SUIT YOU
