Journalists under fire

Brian Meade
Brian Meade

Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Dominica State College (DSC), Brian Meade, has accused journalists on the island of twisting facts when presenting the news to suit their personal agenda.

Meade was addressing the closing ceremony of a six-week journalism skills course at the DSC Bath Estate Campus on Tuesday.

Meade said he is troubled because this alleged practice has tainted the profession’s image.

“Unfortunately these days I am very concerned by what I hear on the airwaves and what I see on local television, especially in the way our so-called journalists twist the facts to serve their own agenda,” he said.

He said in his opinion, this practice has negatively impacted the journalism profession in Dominica.

Meantime President of the DSC, Dr. Donald Peters, said he is “mortified” by the quality of news on the island.

“As I listen to the radio and read the articles actually written by journalists, I as a professor I am ashamed to say that most of them can’t even be used in my classroom,” he remarked.

Is Brian and Donald trying to confuse the people? because when the news is not twisted they get mad at the journalists for speaking the truth.

DNO, Not for the first time I’ve contributed what I think is positive criticism of your work and not for the first time you refuse to publish it. Quite instructive, I think.

I do not understand that I directed a simply comment to Brian Mead specifically, intended to humor the guy, and this fictitious people all went ballistic. When I wanted to contribute to the article I took time out to do so, if you guys were not so quick to draw swords you may have seen my second post.

Why create an issue when none exists, I am sure if and when Brian read my comment he will recognized the humor in it and perhaps simple chuckle, and say Francisco Who?

    Hahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahah!

You people take things too serous, some time it is good to be humorous, kid around some it is good for your health.

At least an honest assessment of the quality of “journalism” in this blessed land; it was also good to see that an exception was NOT made in the case of DBS; they too, distort and skew information to suit their personal agenda. And that too, is beyond dispute!

It’s not even the twisting of facts that get to me, it’s the poor command of the English language. I feel like I am the only person who wants to bring back “people” to Dominica. Suddenly, the plural of person is persons. sigh

What about youth? I always thought “youth” was a collective word but these days it seems acceptable to say youths. Even our Ministers of government say youths.

Yes ‘reader’,the Concise English Oxford Dict.does endorse ‘persons’as an acceptable alternative to be used in certain cases.People is the commoner and is more applicable in ordinary contexts as in eg…a group of people, whereas persons are restricted in the use of either official or formal contexts as in “this vehicle is authorized to carry twenty persons”.
The questions is of course whether our present media personnel are aware of these factors of usage?

Very interesting listening and reading. Sounds like competition among the media houses now. Where are the days of sharing information among the media houses. I think the statement was meant to get at certain media houses and that is bad. The statement should be said in a manner that would encourage more entrants into the media to sign up for the journalism course the next time around. The are media workers and not journalists until they complete one or two courses. On the other hand if the statement was meant to get at DNO,QFM,Chronicle KairiFM Voice of Life or radio En ba Mango or any of the others that is unfair because at each of these houses has one or two persons that know what they are about. Maybe the news ones are lagging behind with the pronunciation and enunciation etc. But do you know that even from the very college we boast about are several young people who cannot read. Papa Bonde Alas bring them in for interviews and ask them to read and you will find out. We need to go back to the days of Edith Bellot Alleyne of UWI who used to spend time teaching her students to read. Nobody is talking about that. It is heart breaking, the number of applications that are seen from the DSC and the poor young people lack Public Speaking or expression. What happened to the days of MWAD with Melvin Didier, Moses Rafael Junior, Tim Durand, Steve Vidal, Felix Augustine junior, Tania Green, Bernard Frampton and Steinburg Henry, Lazarus Samuel, Adina Bellot, Camela Bellot, Julian Morris, Charles James and Raymond Henderson Each media house should rather come together and see how they can help build each other as a team because at th end of the day these are the same people that congregate at important functions and press conferences. No one should try to spread bad blood among the media practitioners or the houses. It is not about making oneself look good. Its supposed to be different in the media. they can come together in collaboration with the DSC to strengthen each other. Some have the technical know-how (computers and editing programs) while others have greater advantage theoretically. Media people do not let that cause you to be perturbed.

“As I listen to the radio and read the articles actually written by journalists, I as a professor I am ashamed to say that most of them can’t even be used in my classroom,” he remarked.”(Brian Mead).

You know if you are one of the same Brian Mead, I encountered in a distance past, I must say I am surprised that you feel this way about journalism, and the Dominica journalists in particular!

The journalists are supposed to collect information regarding a matter: one cannot be present as the incident occurs, therefore information are collected; scrutinized, and proved true or false when they are told before it is printed in newspapers, or broadcast over the Radio and Television.

On the other hand where it pertains to an investigative reporter (journalist), that is one who investigates difficult issues, cases that an ordinary reporter afraid to tackle and report on he matter, one still cannot say for certain these people twist the truth in their favor, to what purpose would that serve?

We have to be careful that our political ideologies do not blind us causing us to be bias in a sense. The journalists in Dominica are limited to local issues only, and since every issue in Dominica is political, the talk show host and their audience gets on the air, and deal with the political issues of the day in a political way.

Everything in Dominica is political, as such every issue is political, and has to be treated in a political manner!

The talk show thing; no one should compare to, or classified such as journalism!

Political talk show’s do not fall in the category of journalism and why would anyone want to use anything a journalist writes in a newspaper, or say on Radio, and Television in a class room as a teaching tool or material?

Every school from elementary kindergarten; to college, or university has a prepared curriculum, I do not know of any part of the world where the materials of any journalists are used in a recognizable educational institution curriculum; if that is happening in Dominica, that would be a first!

And before I hear the question as I heard so many times before ” where he get his smarts from” let it be know that I am elementary, secondary, collage, and university educated!

I earned a Bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering, one in Electrical Engineering, also an Associate in Science in Electronic Engineering, and secured an Associate in Arts in the Liberal Arts.

Armed with such scientific knowledge, I am certain that in my text bocks there was nothing written by any journalist. So, if we are to depend on the opinion, and views of a journalist as part of our junior college, or other educational institutions in Dominica, I suggest something is warped in out educational system.

However with all things unequal in our country, one never knows!

      March 15, 2013

But Francisco for all your talk, I thought you had a PHD eh.

A Bachelor’s Degree is almost like a high school diploma these days.

Go for your PHD man….I sure you will be able to make it even bigger in the world.

      • March 15, 2013

Don’t be ridiculous Dorival; it not easy to come by a bachelor in science degree in anything never mind in the field of electronics, and electrical engineering; which are two different discipline entirely.

Even an associate in science in electronics is not easy to obtain, my junior degree in the Liberal Arts, gives me the ability to venture into many different areas of the sciences, so just incase you do not know I have told you!

If you believe it is that simply, or easy to obtain anything that I have accomplished educationally; the road is clare to you, proceed, let’s see if you can accomplish what I have accomplished.

Mind you I worked more than forty hours per week while I was educating myself, so it’s okay for you to talk crap, and try to take me down into the gutter; but I doubt you have a single degree, perhaps you do not even have what we used to call the seventh standard school leaving certificate of long ago in Dominica.

Tell me how many GCE subject have you accumulated?

I bet you do not even have one; not even a tea spoon full oui:

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

By the way, do you have a PhD in anything?

Dorival for your information if I did not get burnt out educationally, and drop out of the medical program I would be a practicing medical doctor this day okay; so a PhD is nothing, if only I wanted to be called Dr. rather than MD., I could have obtained one. And let me tell you I have studied health science, and developed enough knowledge in medicine which I can use to save your very life.

If I want to I can take classes on a weekend, on Saturdays and secure one; that’s how simply it is to come by; it is not a big deal!

Now if you say to me an BA (Bachelor in Arts) these days has very little value I will agree with you, because here in California, and some other States in the United States they rate that at the same level as an Associate in Science, or an Associate in Arts, depending from what discipline it derives!

For you to claim that a bachelor in science degree is similar to a high school diploma, tells me that you are kidding, or perhaps you are a fool who does not know anything about the modern day educational system: it takes more than four years of university education to obtain that!

So have fun while you critique, I expect nothing less from a Dominican!

What a difference a few years make; the two last time I saw Brian was forty plus years ago, first occasion was at ZAL Television, when I took some Finlaters Whiskey to him to be used in a commercial (advertisement), for O. D Brisbane who was the agent of the product.

I worked for Brisbane in the position of Tariff Clerk!

The last time was at Courts Guess House also in Antigua, the man looked like a fully developed six feet four giant, solid as a body builder, now he looks like a shadow of his youth!

This only goes to show that nothing lasts forever, land mark changes so to do the body structure of humans; when we begin to get older there is no return when the ageing effect takes precedence!

We must be prepared to become little old men, and women all of us even the pompous who walks around with their nose in the sky.

I am also beginning to age also eh!

Life is an ongoing aging process until we die. Do you not know generally as people age they lose their normal height; get shorter? I have known this ever since I was a child.

While I fully agree with Mr.Meade, I would highly appreciate if he would now turn his attention to cleaning his house first (DBS) and then help the neighbors do the same in good faith. Also, he must advise Skerro to fire the DBS board of directors because they have assumed personal ownership of DBS which as far as I know is the property of the nation.

    March 14, 2013

Mr. Brian Meade is mistaken by the statement he made as regards Newspapers and journalists in Dominica. This statement does not pertain to DNO or Q95. When a news item is reported and people either call the talk show or write a comment on that particular news item does not make the news item reported or journalist who has reported the news irresponsible. For instance a few weeks ago it was reported that many sums of money were paid by the Prime Minister’s lawyer on behalf of the Prime Minister and up to this day their has been no response to that news item, is that irresponsible journalism. We also heard on Q95 that a popular lawyer was responsible for disclosing important comfidential financial documents of the Prime Minister and to this day their has been no response by the lawyer or Prime Minister,it that also irresponsible journalism.I would like Mr. Meade to tell Dominicans which newspaper, portal or journalist in his opinion is twisting facts when it comes to news reporting.I have had issues with DNO as regards certain comments that are posted, but I must give them a thumbs up when it comes to the accurate reporting of news. Their is a saying, you must remove the beam from your eyes first before you remove that of your brother.By the way who is the General Manager of the so call National Radio Station.

    CHUPES

MEADE so everybody who talks on d radio or hosts a program is a journalist ? There are so many persons who don’t have any professional training and don’t have any paper to show yet they call themselves journalist. Its those persons that bring the profession into disrepute. Hence when all those foolishness taking place on those TALK SHOWS and POLITICAL PRGORAMS don’t blame it on journalist. There are so many fools and political prostitutes parading as journalist in Dominica…its not funny !

I know that DNO is making a difference in the way it goes about its journalistic business, without fear of favour or ill will but DNO tries to be as impartial as possible to bring out the information as accurately as possible.

There are some so called journalist write poorly and speak badly. Its so embarrassing the way they go about abusing the English language.

Trust me if the English language was a minor a lot of our so called journalist would be imprisoned for statutory rape, for the way the English language have been violated.

I therefore commend the DSC for a job well done and I do hope that more media practioners take advantage of this the next time around the said programme is offered. But some of those practioners are so………….they will not follow the course, I guess they are afraid of exams and don’t want their inefficencies to be further exposed, but that’s a naïve way at looking at it. I believe its an appropriate means to help them sharpen their skills and get some much needed academic credentials.

DNO…NONE OF US IS PERFECT FOR ALL HAVE FALL SHORT.
