Kalinago Chief, Chairman of Atkinson and Antrizle Village Council support roadblocking protest

Joseph

Although no word has surface yet of exactly who orchestrated and executed a road block in Antrizle Monday morning, Kalinago Chief Garnet Joseph and Chairman of the Atkinson and Antrizle Village Council Anton Laville have both come out in support of the move.

Both men indicated that the road running from Castle Bruce to Pagua has been in a deplorable condition for the last five years. “It is the worst piece of road in the entire road network in the country,” Chief Joseph indicated. “What is happening necessitates protest.”

The leaders of the North Eastern Communities pointed out what adds to the frustration is that government officials are fully aware of the poor state of the road but nothing is being done. “I am aware that the Parliamentary Representative (Ashton Graneau) has been making representation on our behalf with regards to the road but we haven’t been able to get a solid response,” the Kalinago Chief said.

Anton Laville pointed out that the government is most responsible for the protest.  “It shouldn’t have gone that far, all the men in authority use the road to travel to the airport, the people wants to show the government that enough is enough and that they are fed up with the road conditions,” Laville stated.

The Kalinago Chief believes that the ‘lack of finance’ explanation coming from the government as a reason for not fixing the road is not credible. “My main concern is the quality of road. Tarish and water are not adequate for repairs. If cost is an issue and the quality of the work they are doing necessitates repairs every six weeks, then they are overspending on the work they are doing,” he said.

The poor condition of the nation’s road network is so visible commentators of the recent West Indies versus India test match remarked about it.

Attempt to reach Parliamentary Representative for the area and Minister of Kalinago Affairs Ashton Graneau proved futile.

The road block protest brought traffic to a grinding halt on the only roadway linking much of the northeastern part of the island to Roseau.

That part of the road has been out of their minds for yrs…eveywhere else getting attention, so why can’t we get the same too..The only time people form the government come to that area is when they need our votes….and thats a place where lots of people come to when ever they visite Dominica. So if is that we got to do to get some attention, we go do it. Water and tarish alone won’t work. We need the entire road form castle Bruce to Harton Garden Resurfaced..ASAP…You Wanted Our votes, now we need you to fullfill your promises…

I am not for making Peter pay for Paul but if this road is as bad a he is saying i understand. It rains in Dominica every 5 mins i honestly think we should have a better system on road up keeeping. It makes no sense to fix the road and 3 months later you let the grass cover the road that u just fix. Just in case you guys don’t have a clue. ROOTS WEAKEN CONCRETE…IF YOU DON’T FIX THE PINHOLE IT WILL TURN INTO A POTHOLE.

Call me rebellious, call me a trouble maker or anti government – blocking the road should be part of an island wide campaign to express our disappointment in this lame government administration.

Go to Hell, Go to Hell Go to hell. the frustration is at its peak now. We need to mind our damn business now in Dominica. Block roads like hell.

lets forget the 27 million dollars mansion with golden toilets and spend the 27 million for the benefit of all dominicans not for a choosen few…
and i have no doubt that the way inwhich this money was negotiated with the chinese along with the construction contract is that the malice/mansion will not cost 27 million but less so a few millions will vanish in thin air

This is one of the most impressive comments I have read. Chief Joseph, I commend you on your intelligent response to this situation. If we are cncerned about costs, we need to spend one good money rather than shoddy patchwork. If tourism is our thing, the kalinago community has been a pillar of tourism in Dominica for ever. People want to come to the territory to see the indigenous people and buy their craft work. The road also serves to link the airport! What are we doing!

One piece of advice I have for the kalinago people; stop being easily swayed. It is time to stop the trend of being fooled by politicians. Now you see, I hope you learn.
