Kalinagos take aim at child abuse

abuseResidents of the Kalinago Territory are taking a firm stand against the issue of Child Abuse by initiating advocacy programs to address the prevailing problem which affects primarily the young vulnerable population.

In continuation of the recently held Child Abuse Prevention workshops in the Kalinago Territory a special committee was put in place to design activities, forums, literature, and parenting sessions to further educate residents on the issue, its implications for victims and in the effort to minimize its occurrence. Counseling services are also made available to victims and their families.

The committee which comprises of local leaders, teachers, parents, youth and social workers work jointly with the Child Abuse Prevention Unit of the Social Welfare Division which provides the necessary technical assistance and guidance.

On Friday May 16th 2014 the Committee will be hosting a movie night featuring specific films on Child Abuse at the Salybia Primary School. This will be done in an effort to sensitize parents and other members of the community on the nature of the issue, effects, identifying and reporting cases.

A specific film will be showed to a younger audience after which discussions will be held and short talks will be delivered by the committee members.

Residents will also get the opportunity to sign the petition developed by the Lifeline Ministries/Victim Supporters Program in an effort to ensure that local laws on Child Abuse are amended, victims and their families receive justice and perpetrators are punished for their crimes.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6pm.

I think not only abuse should be attended to but also incest, incest is a form of abuse and all such persons should have to be dealt with, if we are serious in curbing these negatives in the society. i am only seeing now on this news item about the movies and the committee, looks like everything is done under the table. our cameras are watching.

    But it does say this:

    Proverbs 23:13-15
Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol. My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.

    Proverbs 13:24
Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

I think that they are talking about child abuse not discipline, there is a difference.

I know and understand that people sometimes take it too far when it comes to striking a child. its one thing to discipline a child and another to physically hurt the child and say its for discipline. People need to understand that… but I was only responding to Dan Tanner’s bit about the bible on sparing the rod and spoiling the child. The bible is very clear on discipline.. However we must be mindful not to harm or physically abuse our children in the name of discipline.. We have to love them and nurture them and treat them with respect, not instil fear and confusion in them.

I wonder how many people know that “Spare the rod and spoil the child” DOES NOT APPEAR in the Bible.

the first thing they should do is clean out the abusers between them – they all know or some of them know the perpetrators of this crimes – you all want to be effective? Come together, give the names of the culprits to the police and support the victims!
