Late February salary for DSC lecturers

dominica state collegeLecturers at the Dominica State College (DSC) are expressing annoyance with the DSC administration, after they were abruptly informed that “they won’t be receiving their February salary on time.”

A letter signed by the bursar of the DSC, Catherine Abraham, to the lecturers states in part, “this letter serves to inform you that salaries for the month of February will undoubtedly be late…”

The letter apologized for the delay and states that the authorities at the DSC are working feverishly to have the matter rectified in the shortest possible time.

It also thanked the lecturers for their patience and understanding.

DNO was told told that staff members are very “upset and annoyed” since they had not been told the DSC was experiencing any financial difficulties and the letter gives them no clear idea as to how soon they can expect to get paid.

DNO unsuccessfully tried to reach the DSC Bursar via telephone but we were told that she was not prepared to speak on the matter.

President of the DSC, Dr. Donald Peters, is currently out of state and cannot be reached for comment.

DNO is following up on this story.

I am a lecturer at the college and do not say what you cannot verify… If I know who who are talking about trust me she is not “moomoo.” her mouth is opening loud. She is no respector of persons and she talks where and when she has to talk for her right. As a matter of fact she tells them at the top what she has to say with no disrespect. She is a frank, bold, independent person that can fight her own battles…..

God doesnt have time for greedy theiving evil lazy ignorant people. Too much real suffering around the world for God to waste precious time on Dominicans.

Leave God out of any conversation to do with this country. We are in this predicament willfully and deliberately. Dominicans put Dominica here. Its not now this nastiness started.

Every man jack on this island should be on his knees BEGGING God for forgiveness and repenting. Do you see that? God? stewps leave God out of this.

Only satan here and DOMINICANS invited him in. Leave God out of this nastiness.

If you think that it is Dominica State College alone facing that problem. Even UWI is struggling. Check it out yourself:

Even if we do not agree with something we should not lie about it. We blame politicians and do the same thing. Fees increase came about in September 2012.

By the way, what percentage of these fees are being paid? That would be interesting statistics.

the lack of funds has nothing to do with the president, bursar etc… as far as my experience when i worked at the college,as a former member of staff, i can tell u, it is the Ministry of Education that needs to be contacted on the said matter.

But again, those on the outside, will simply assume the worst, crucify the innocent, while the politicians are laughing and being merry.

      February 28, 2013

Really? This is so wrong. The Ministry of Education? Does the Ministry of Education pay salaries to anyone?????

I hope you were not at the state college as a lecturer because you are something of an ignoramus.

        February 28, 2013

as a professional, there are things i can put in public and things i should not… but believe me, the gov’t has something to do with college staff being paid… they have some share in it and has some responsibilities to it…. anyway i’ll leave it there… but if u don’t believe me then ask St Jean…..

      February 28, 2013

if strike is on Friday then these people head too full of education that they have no sense. They would prefer the letter the Marpin employees got?

Withdrawal of labour does not work when the supply of labour is greater than the demand. If you give some of these lectures (who are not qualified educators anyway even if they have experience) their matching papers, you will see how many more will be lurking to get the job at a percentage of the salaries. All that has to be done is keep them for one term before they get comfortable.

Financial difficulties? What will happen when the new state of the art college that is being built by China opens up? Will the government be able to afford to keep it running? Will there be sufficient funds to cover utilities, supplies, and pay the lecturers? Dr. Peter, let’s hope you and the board of directors are seriously considering alternate funding mechanisms to keep this institution alive. Tuition? Alumini Association? Friends of DSC? Fundraising? Grants from international donors? Continuing education programs? With all of your US connections you should be able to implement some of the measures that colleges in the US utilize to stay afloat. Everytime I turn around my US college is sending an envelope in the mail asking for financial support; newsletter with what’s going on, Meet-up with the President in my neighborhood with open bar and some silly little appetizers. Strategize, Dr. Peter, strategize before it’s too late. People cannot work without pay.

As a student before u even register on Orbund you have to pay 400 EC cash and delivered, a shirt is 60 EC cash, everything up @ DSC is money so somebody please do the maths. FEES went up i wondering where all these money goes too.

    • Anonymous
      February 28, 2013

you think 25.00 EC a credit can pay lecturers? Do the maths. If a class has 40 students (a big class) that is 3000 for 3 months. How many of you would work for that?

    • hhmmm

since imf put in regulations, dsc became a private institution. since that time everything has gone downhill. i think the college would be better off with the government in charge
students cannot pay the fees which keep getting higher, and when the college has to depend on this money to pay bills and teachers, here comes the problem. teachers always getting paid late in this college, so the letter stating that they were unaware that dsc was facing financial problems should be deleted.
did you know that on many occasions the electricity in the bath estate campus was cut because of lack of payment? and negotiations made each time to get it back on?
there is a lot more going on

  31. No hard feelings!!!

And I heard that the Doc was asking the Ministry of Education for an increase in his salary “because he is the lowest paid president in the Caribbean”, and they can not pay the lecturers who are also lower paid than anywhere else.
And what does “undoubtedly be late mean?” Are the salaries going to be late or not?
How is it that is it only since the Doc has become president that salaries are not being paid on time

its just the beginning! The PM will have to start printing the $Skerro. I heard 100 Skerros to a US dollar. After all Dominicans will have tonnes of cash in their pockets. Problem solved.

I really wonder what will drive the Dominican people to stage a revolution against this incompetent, corrupt regime. We have two choices. One, lets take the blows we get and keep our mouths shut or two, lets show the labour party what time it is. Silence is betrayal- is either you with us or against us. We needs boots on the ground people. Time for highs and glory days of labor are long gone!!!!!!

Are you crazy? You calls for the violent overthrow of the duly elected democratic government is totally uncalled for! The Dominica Labour Party won the most recent general election by an 18 to 3 margin, I think that should demonstrate to any thinking person that the VAST MAJORITY (over 60%) support our government and its vision for the future!

Boots on the ground – my foot! Its votes in the ballot box that you need and unfortunately for you the opposition cannot deliver, because they are just to old, lazy and incompetent.

I am sure all these staffers have yet to miss a day since the school year started. Some excuse…this is rather frustrating. Food to buy, bills to pay money to pay the bus to come to the same job, children to feed and send to school…school just sending over list after list as if parents were supermarkets, financial institutions not hearing it ni ho ni bas they wan t their money or interest double eh and he out of state. The bursar self know it have no money she waiting just before month-end to tell the people this crap news. Give people a chance to discuss with their creditors what happening so domlec can qwedie them some light, dowasco a can stretch it a bit…even marpin sending people home they I guess should be the most understanding of all and forgive the 10th of the month story and leave that alone.
