In a world where volunteer work sometimes seems like a thing of the past, members of the Leo Club of Dominica is shedding some light on volunteerism and community service through their work in various communities around the island.
The club recognized its 19th anniversary on Saturday 14th, September and engaged members in various activities for the week geared at developing Dominica and changing lives for the better.
The anniversary celebrations kicked off with a service at the Christian Union Mission Church in Soufriere where members gave thanks for seeing another year as a service club.
This was followed by a community service project at the Dublanc pre-school where the club donated stationary to the students. The donation included pencils, paper, crayons, paint sets etc. and stationary for teachers, charts, pens, manila papers, scrap books etc. and a supply of toiletry.
This was organized by the Early Childhood Committee of the club.
Members of the club also participated in a Wellness Walk to Screws which was organized by the Rotary Club of Dominica on Saturday 14th, 2013. The walk began in the morning on the bay front in Roseau and ended at Wotton Waven.
The Leo Club of Dominica culminated its week of activities with a train ride for the Elderly. This took place on Sunday the 15th along the streets of Roseau. The event was described as an enjoyable experience for the elderly who enjoyed the fresh breeze on that Sunday afternoon. Their minds were refreshed with what the town looked like as they were surprised with many of the old buildings that were still in existence as well as all the new buildings.
Residents got the chance to greet friends and family while passing along the streets.
The Botanical Gardens was one of their favourite stops as they sat and enjoyed the cool breeze and the chirping of the birds. It was organized by the H&GC (Health and Geriatrics Committee) of the club.
The Leo Club remains committed to providing service to those in need, in different communities across Dominica. One of the Clubs’ yearly activity is the Junior Calypso Monarch , which takes place as part of Dominica carnival celebrations.
See photos below of the various activities.
So proud of my Leo Club!
I see some DGS ole boys.
Continue your great service.
Can somebody explain why the LEO Club of Dominica is only 19 years old. I recall that in 1982 or there about the LEO Club was launched at a ceremony at the Goodwill Parish Hall followed by a parade through the streets of Roseau accompanied by the St. Alphonsus Scout troop with Rawle Leslie and jeff Joseph leading the troop. Personalities such as Oliver St. John, Mitchel Raffoul (now sick), Beverley Blackman, the Frampton girls (Clara and Edna), Carleen Roberts, Cheryl; Tavenier, Edmund Rodney, William Charles, Valena Jacob, Sandra Abraham, Joseph Raffoul, as pioneers. The first LEO Advisor was Akel Raffoul. Meetings of the Club were held initially at the home of Hannah Raffoul on Kennedy Avenue. 1982 to present is 31 years. What has happened to the first 12 years? In fact the LEO Club came into being before women were allowed as members into the local Club. Somebody should explain.
regardless if they were there 24yrs before. its good to see they still there and still serving the public/dominica as body. keep up the good work Leo Club and all the best for the new year and all the rest to come
yea but you shouldn’t ignore/forget your past
I whole hearteedly support the LEO and LIONs Club for all that they represent and are doing for the oountry. There work and dedication to duty is worth commendation at every turn. In fact I have contributed to the LIONS CLUB program of activities. Congrats to the LEO CLUB for keeping the fire burning
But what is wong with asking a simple question? Did the first grouping went into a dormancy period beyond the what is accepted in order to maintain its status within the code of conduct of LIONS Club International? This is a simple question that any current member of the LIONS club executive could answer. I do not see the need to “diss” the question. The names mentioned above were used just to prove that a LEO CLUB was inaugurated in Dominica in 1982.
DON’T MISTAKE LEO WITH LION.
Positive vibes! Congrats and all the best.
congratulations to the Leo Club of Dominica. do continue the great work in assisting the public where ever you can… may God bless you guys…
