LIME gives over $50,000 to Forestry & NCC

Director of Forestry Minchinton Burton receives cheque from LIME’s GM Jeffrey Baptiste

The Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division and the National Cultural Council recently received the combined sum of over $50,0000 from telecommunications company LIME from gate receipts of the ninth edition of the LIME Creole in the Park.

The Botanic Gardens in the capital city has been the home of the LIME Creole in the Park since its inception nine years ago and General Manager of LIME Jeffrey Baptiste said his company had to find a creative way to support the Forestry Division in keeping the gardens in its natural state following CITP.  “And so we decided to collect a small contribution from patrons which would be used for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of the Botanic Gardens once the four-day event had ended”, said Mr. Baptiste. To date the funds have been utilized in the building of a Gazebo, entry & exit gates, benches and the purchase of lawn mowers among other areas as confirmed by Director of Forestry Minchinton Burton.

Last year the NCC initiated a request to LIME asking that they receive a contribution from the gate collections towards the support of Cultural enhancement and growth. As a company reputed for supporting Dominica’s culture and heritage this was an easy decision to give the stamp of approval according to General Manager Baptiste.

“I am indeed honored to receive these funds on behalf of the National Cultural Council. I am confident that the NCC will apply these funds in a most appropriate way to support the development of music and the arts”, commented Minister of Culture Justina Charles. She further thanked LIME for the gesture and the patrons who contributed by attending the LIME CITP.

Chairman of the NCC and Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence said the NCC was humbled by the fact that LIME agreed to assist from the earnings of this cultural event. “Rest assured that the funds will be ploughed back into the nurturing and development of our artists and cultural groups” confirmed Mr. Lawrence.

A total of $33,379.00 went to the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division while the National Cultural Council banked $16,689.00.

Minister of Culture Justina Charles & Chairman of the NCC Raymond Lawrence accepted on behalf of Culture while Minchinton Burton represented the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division.

LIME will host the tenth anniversary of Creole in the Park this year from October 22nd – 25th.

Great job guys! However, we need to seriously consider building an amphitheater in that area of the gardens. This would surely enhance and compliment this and other tourism product in that area; and avoid us from inhaling that ‘foul smell’ when rain falls during the event, which happens ever year.

WHEN THE IRRIGATION PROJECT IS COMPLETED AT THE BOTANICAL GARDENS, WE WILL THEN HAVE TO BUILD A “CONSERVATORY” AT THE GARDENS. The Conservatory will be the “building” for planting and nurturing plants and fowers and have them on display for tourists and locals to go in and view. That will be a great additional feature at the Botanical Gardens in addition to water features.
