“Lions” on new bridge cause controversy; participate in DNO poll on this matter

One of the "lions" on the bridge

The four “lions” gracing the newly opened Dominica/China Friendship Bridge have stirred up a slight bit of controversy.

Opponents of the government and some ordinary citizens have questioned why these “Chinese statues” have been placed on a Dominican bridge.

Some have suggested that it is China’s way of trying to stamp its mark on a Dominica it is assisting financially in a number of areas.

The 70 metre bridge was constructed over a 17 month period to the tune of EC$8 million provided by mainland China.

Among those criticizing the “lions” placed at both entrances to the new bridge are DNO bloggers – they have had mixed reaction to these Chinese “symbols”.

Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmoore took up the issue at Wednesday’s official opening of the bridge.

“A lot of persons have asked me, Mr Blackmoore, what are those dragons doing there,” the minister said, admitting that it had evoked some level of curiosity.

“I said to them, those are not dragons, they are lions, and lions are a universal expression of strength and courage and that is why we must say thank you very much to the Peoples Republic of China for the support and their help thus far,” Minister Blackmoore said.

However research indicates that the statues are ‘foo dogs.’  Foo Dogs are the ancient sacred dogs of Asia who guard Buddhist temples.  The association between these dogs and Buddha is one of great significance.  Foo Dogs have the appearance of a lion.  The lion in Buddhist religion is seen as sacred, and has sometimes been offered to Buddha as a sacrifice.

While the four controversial fixtures might be quickly forgotten as more important matters take centre stage in the near future, for the moment they remain a talking point for some, especially those who would have preferred that they had not been made part of the China-funded bridge.

Dominica News Online wants readers’ opinion on this matter. On the bottom right hand side of the home page a poll is located asking the question “Should the Dominican authorities have place the “Chinese lions” on the new bridge?”

Choose either “yes” or “no” and give us an idea of the consensus on this matter.

The poll is between DNO’s Facebook plug in and the LIME ad.

CHINESE GUARDIAN LIONS….EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE MEANING AND PURPOSE….., known as Shishi (Chinese: 石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally “stone lion”) or Imperial guardian lion, and often incorrectly called “Foo Dogs” in the West, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. They have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits. Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance, in China and in other places around the world where the Chinese people have immigrated and settled, especially in local Chinatowns.

A Ming Dynasty Shishi in the Forbidden City

A Qing-era guardian lion pair within the Forbidden City. Note the different appearance of the face and details in the decorative items, compared to the earlier Ming version
The lions are always created in pairs, with the male resting his paw upon the world and the female restraining a playful cub that is on its back. They occur in many types of Chinese pottery and in Western imitations.

People stay calm, keep taking as much as you can from China as they are the richest ecconomy state in the world they have very much to offer.Soon we may be build Cars in D/CA.Wouldn’t that be progress?.

Another way of containment is to offer them a square to live and work like SOHO as in London UK. In this way you all will be able to keep them under control. But keep taking as much as you can to making Dominica the most affluent state of the carribean.

Let me tell Dominicans that even the temple and the palace that solomon built had lions engraved or statues of winged creatures. Lions mean strength and vigor. The emblems on all coat of arms have lions. Better to be lions or any other animal than dragons or statues of budha.

They are not called Foo Dogs at all. They are Guardian Lions (Shishi). They would probably be better placed in front of the State Palace (maybe we’ll get them there too). DNO, Can you all guys try to obtain some statistics form the Ministry of Works about the bridge, for example: The depth of the footing for the pillars (heard it was 40ft), the total length of steel used in the project; the length of the bridge; the total volume of concrete used, etc etc. That could make an interesting story. And, is that Roseau Market Bridge, a.k.a. the D-C-F. Bridge our longest on Dominica now?

Foo Dog you make right! Why Dominicans fretting about these statues? I stayed in Dominica for ten years. I never saw a monument or statue to honor anyone in the history of Dominica. You have many people to be proud of yet you honor none! Everybody looking for fette. Well the Chinese people have pride and sence of self and they are not foolish. But if I could tell you what they think they watch you all like you foo foo and greedy and just lazy but they are too respectable to tell you that.

The lions are always presented in pairs, a manifestation of yin and yang, the female representing yin and the male yang. The male lion has its right front paw on an embroidered ball called a “xiù qiú” which is sometimes carved with a geometric pattern known in the West as the “Flower of life” The female is essentially identical, but has a cub under the closer (left) paw to the male, representing the cycle of life. Symbolically, the female fu lion protects those dwelling inside, while the male guards the structure.

I have no difficulty with the Lions on the bridge. As I have said before every country spending on foreign land will want their mark. Canada uses the maple leaf and China uses the Lions/dogs. Alittle word to Evangelist Peter R. Augustine: If this was in Eddison James Government, I can hear you shouting its idol worship. You remember when there was the Sun Rise thanks giving service on Jan 1st 2000, you went public to say this was Sun worship? I would like to hear your views on this one. But offcourse I know that all what was evil for you in Eddison James days is now holy and righteous for you. You are moo moo now on what you spoke about between 1995 to 2000. The Lord will judge.

What is Idolatry? Before the lions you did not know about Idolatry? Right infront of the bridge is KFC with a big lighted picture of kfc what do u call that.It seems to me because people dont support the government they have to much to say on matters thats not relaviant. As far as I concern i see no problem with the lions cause they make the bridge standard raise and it bring some enhansment to our city. But while many talk about Idolatry they live in places aroung the world where bigger statues are and they have no problem with that but because is Dominica they have a problem with it.All i can say as a greatful Dominican is THANK YOU VERY MUCH to the chiness government for giving us this state of the art brige at no cost to our tresury and beleive you me we all will benefit from it once again I say THANK YOU VERY MUCH and may God continue to bless your country.

How about they put our sisserou on the great wall of china. I think that would be fair. Its is disrespectful and quite tacky to say the least! But then again all skerritt doe do is kiss ass. Go read up the meaning of the Chinese Lion ( nothing to do with Voodoo, or China trying to take over Dominica). I would greatly appreciate something with meaning of prosperity and good will to stand 15 feet tall in Dominica. though we Dominicans were open to different cultures and beliefs. Just so you know we have Chinese living here now and they too have cultural beliefs.

How then are we to be grateful when we do not even know what our government has gotten us into? These things need to go. This “take a fish” mentaility we have in Dominica is just getting on my very last working nerve at present. These countries have no intention of teaching us to fish. They want to give us a fish to keep us coming back like dogs. What in God’s name are we doing with a bridge when our health care, legal system and school systems are in shambles? You know what Dominicans are so naive they travel to NY, Washington DC etc and enjoy China Town. The Republic of China helps the Country why can’t they have some type of symbolization. It is time we recognize these people for all they do for Dominica. I see no problem or issues with the Foo Dogs.. There are greater issues impacting Dominica that needs to be addressed instead. Change is good as long as it is in the best interest of Dominica and it’s citizens bring it on.

has anyone given thought to how this decision was reached.

We need the facts on this. I personally believe having the bridge is more important than the Foo Dogs considering that this is a grant.

Is it because it was built by Chinese or that they are budhist ???Would it be ok if it was USA, UK or France

If it was left to DA would there be a bridge today, tomorrow, next week, 5 years.

Are we now trying to dictate to those who trying to assist.

We have to accept we do not always get what we want, but to me progress is made when what we do get, which is functional, adequate, is a solution (sometimes partially) is much better than nothing

Change is always difficult to accept but its great that these discussions are taking place because it means that development is slowly creeping into my Nature Ilse. It has always been said that the Caribbean is a Melting Pot,where there is no discrimination of race, color or creed. Once our laws are NOT violated, we should invite all people and their culture into our land, as they do when we make their land our home.

Its time for the Chinese to be given the right to build their CHINA TOWN with Foo Foo Dogs, Lions, Dragons and everything else that is withing the legal prameters of our Constitution.

Common my people, we cry for development, yet, we are so enslaved mentaly.

    I LOVE YOU DOMINICA

Embracing this status has more than superficial mean. This is an insult to Dominica and Dominicans ” know to be a Christian Nation” .

They place there Idols right in your Face knowing that Dominicans will only talk for a while and then turn a blind eyes on it ( So predictable ! )

Well i know the true spiritual eyes of Dominica well understand the deep true meaning of these things but the normal man will continue in his ignorance. (as expected)

These Chinese lions have a meaning and they are pagan statues, I believe that they were placed there for a bigger reason than most people choose to argue about, something is unfolding in the world at this point in time and these statues are a pagan representation of that; most people have an idea of what is unfolding but they give other things priority in there lives, I think that the statues should never have been placed there in the first place and should be removed. People, just try and take time out and read these few verses from the Bible (King James Version) because the time is now and most people seem not to be taking note – REVELATION 13:2 & REVELATION 13:14-15 & MARK 1:14-15 & ACTS 16:31

The Chinese understand too well the meaning of symbols and the erection of those in strategic locations. Some Dominicans really do not understand the meaning of or the importance of having local symbols of social/cultural values to be also erected in strategic locations on Island.

Who cares? They do not and will never, unfortunately, undertsand the issue of MENTAL SLAVERY. A people without the KNOWLEDGE of its HISTORY is DOOMED. You cut off the roots of any tree and eventually that tree is bound to die. Just check and reflect on those comments about “is Chinese that build so……….”
BEGGARS are NO CHOOSERS? Because you have your hands outstrecthed begging for handouts, the giver should control your life? The giver should swamp Roseau and displace your local business men and women?

So in this new millenium, it is not a problem to be ENSLAVED again? If you all do not have the ability or intelligence to see, so be it. But I cannot be convinced that the new kind of sLavery IS THE BEST THING FOR DOMINICA TODAY?

    E. O. Leblanc and many other Dominicans fought too hard to get us to appreciate, love, promote and protect our unique local social/cultural SYMBOLS. Today, Dominicans in their Political partisan short-sightedness are quickly reversing all what E. O. Leblanc stood for.

What MAKAKWI !!! Road named after E.O Leblanc, but entrance of bridge/road adorned with foreign Chinese Symbols erected on both sides, instead of our local cultural symbols. What a disgrace!!!! Totally SOLD OUT. Mental Slavery aided and abetted by our own people. A people whose ancestors were enslaved(chattel slavery)) and humiliated. The impact is still visible. Today it is the MIND that is enslaved.

The foreign symbols on the Chinese-built bridge will further tighten that control of the mind of those unpatriotic Dominicans. That enslavement of the mind is like the thorns placed around Jesus Christ’s head on the road to being crucified.

Human manipulation have come a long way,and now it’s is being employed in every day life. When u have a nation who takes every topic and allow it to become such a big story and occupy their minds they tend to forget about the real problems that affects them and do not see beyond the manipulation.Right now all i’m hearing is about foo dogs on a bridge, what about the state house? What about the court rulling on behalf of the Pm?Why are so many issue that affect the country is being set a side. The goverment is building and building, but where are the investment to create jobs and give people the a normal life that they deserve, why should we have to pay taxes which will repay loans for inferstructure that will provide no income to a country. The day Dominica went to main land china and set a side from Taiwan, was it thought of knowing china is one of the biggest manufacture of machines of all types. So why by now we do have at least 10 manufactureing plants to process all the fruits there is in dominica.I guess this will not happen because it is not the goverment intention to allow the people to be finacialy independent,It is proven that when you keep people deprived of finance they will depend on the ones running the country.

You do not sound like someone who really understand what manipulation is,nice catch word. What makes you think that it is not you that has been manipulated into thinking about the issues you attribute to be the problems facing the Country, the issues you brought up do not sound like someone with an independent mind and own thinking but rather
taking on the rhetoric preached daily by people with a political agenda.

You reasoning is so absurd,You do not understand the importance of infrastructural investment. Why is it that you think that Government is responsible for making people
financially independent. You to need to begin challenging your own assumptions. Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while or the light won’t come in.

That someone below could refer to the lions as “imported demons” that somehow cause problems with Jesus just goes to show how painfully stupid some people can be. A statue of a lion/foo dog/whatever is now a demon that will destroy a country? Seriously? The people who think like this should be laughed at and humiliated for such embarrassing primitiveness. It is such people who actively want to prevent Dominica from moving beyond the version of the Dark Ages it’s currently stuck in.

As for the broader argument about the staues being there: well, if you hate foreign things in the island so much, why not start removing all the French names from Dominica? Why not get rid of Creole? After all, we are not a French country. Oh, but that was a part of history, you say. Just like these lions will be in the future, right?

You people who dislike the statues will need better arguements than that. The parrot idea I admit is good, and that would have been a good image of Dominica, but what’s done is done. And one day in the future, no one will care about these lions/dogs anymore, and this whole debate will have been virtually useless.

We are a God fearing people, and we are firm in our beliefs so the impact of these Lions should not be one of significance to us, so let us look at it in a different light. @ Humanist

There is a huge difference. Learn and know your history. Dominica once belonged to the French. Consider that the British did not get Dominica easily. They paid the French to get out of Dominica. This is how the British obtained Dominica.
Dominica will always be somewhat French and what with the French patois/creole language and names. No one can take that away from DA.
China is a foreign country and a non-democratic one at that. The Chinese government controls religion in their country. Religious people have been imprisoned and put to death for practicing their faith in China.
Let it be known that when governments decide to do business with such dictatorship foreigners, they should conduct an investigation of their human and religious rights.
Granted, the island needed financial assistance for their economical progress. China saw a leeway in all those islands and took advantage of it.
I am informing you and warning you that a grave error was made.
What is waiting for Dominica and other West Indian islands included Guyana in some years down the road, only God knows.
China will take over those countries. Already it is stated by some world powers that China is dominating the economy. This is a concern and a grave one. Do your homework.

      WHAT U WAITING FOR?

  75. Justice and Truth
    February 2, 2012

Viewing the pictures of the bridge, I concur that it is a beautiful one and appear well-built. I expect that there is a pedestrian sidewalk.
The DA government should install street lights. How will DA nationals and visitors be able to cross the bridge without them? May there be no accidents when they are trying to cross and that drivers may slow down for pedestrians. God help them!
As much as China assists Dominica and to build this bridge, I do think that Dominica has been short-changed and an injustice was done to Dominica, in that those four lions which are at the centre and front of the controversy.
First of all, Dominica is not a Chinese country and China must recognize that. If China assisted Dominica as in this case to build a bridge what should have done, there could be a notation that it was built by Chinese engineers. This should not be conspicuous as two lions which were constructed on either side of the bridge.
Mr. Blackmore, it is important that you include Dominicans who elected you in such matters. This refers to all DA politicians. You must reach out to the people and ask their opinion on naming the bridge and also offer a prize for the best submission and feasible one which would be chosen.
Did China or the Chinese engineers discuss with you that those lions would be built and conspicuously placed on either side of the bridge?
The norm should have been if you had utilized your basic common sense, given it a thought and include Dominican nationals who reside therein to reach out to them and conduct a referendum, a poll and/or survey and ask Dominicans for their views about “naming the bridge”.
The bridge should have been named either after a famous Dominican who contributed excellent service to Dominica or a present one.
Roseau already has two bridges. As I recall them, the old bridge and the new bridge. The new one, leading out of Roseau and the old one, to Roseau. Have those names changed?
If per chance you were notified that after completion of the bridge those four lions would be built on either end, you should also have consulted the Dominican people. After all, Dominica is a Christian country. It is not a non-Christian and godless one.
As a few of those who commented stated, it would have been appropriate to have some sort of emblem which reflects Dominica and its culture. I endorse that. I do believe that the Sisserou Parrot would have made an excellent emblem on those bridges. Rest assured that Dominicans would have been elated with them for I reiterate they reflect Dominica’s culture.
The lions do not reflect Dominica’s culture. In fact, even viewing them on this Website they are a sore-sight and should be removed. GET THIS? I STATE THAT THEY SHOULD BE REMOVED! They will always cause controversy between all Dominicans.
Last but not least, it is not that DA nationals are not grateful for China’s help but that China must keep in mind that Dominica is not a Chinese country. They are only assisting DA, I hope.
I pray that Dominica will never become a Chinese country and that China, while offering help be it in the form of a bridge should respect Dominica’s religion and culture and not force its culture on Dominicans and its nationals, all because it is assisting DA. Failure to do so will reflect a selfish and non-caring attitude for Dominica and its nationals.
The Sisserou Parrot – Apre Bon Dieu C’est La Terre. This is our emblem and our culture. After God is the earth. Respect for Dominica, its culture, religious and otherwise and for Dominicans.
Those of us who reside abroad must consider this too and cooperate with fellow Dominicans who are displeased about this disgraceful picture of a lion. To us who are Christians, we do not mess around with lions since they are capable of devouring us. They are dangerous animals. Why would Dominicans would be pleased to have those lions on their bridge even though the bridge was built by China through a loan or grant?
    God’s love, peace and protection!

      @ Justice & Truth:

I was reluctant to comment on this bridge issue, but as I struggle to keep up with ALL the comments, I feel obligated to respond. First of all, I am infuriated by the smarty pants who call others dumb, foolish and idiots for calling the art work ‘lions’ and not “foo dogs”. These art work are refered to by all of the above, in addition to ‘mythical lions’, ‘guardian lions’, ‘foo lions’, etc. So why insult people for usage of a name that varies according to the source of your research.

Secondly, these symbols are highly regarded and sacred to the Chinese. They are given as gifts to people they hold in high esteem. Ancient Chinese gave them to emperors as gifts because of their mythical guardian powers.

Thirdly, Mr Justice and Truth, Christianity was foreign to the Kalinago and African culture. We were forced to accept Christianity. Jesus was a Jew but the Jews do not embrace Christianity like we do. Those who speak of idolatry; look all around Dominica and see the massive crosses and crucifixes. These had some chilling effects on me as a kid. Berekua, (Tete Lalay), Tete Morne, Pichelin,Laplaine and many other villages in Dominica, have those crosses; some with crucifixes, as in Laplaine. Is that our original culture? Arguing against the Chinese symbolic art work given to friends held in high esteem is like arguing against the Pope mandating that a cross and crucifix be placed in a ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

Finall, it is hypocritical to argue for a parrot or crapaud. When, in 1978, the DLP government of P.R.Johh adopted the crapaud for the emblem of the National Commercial and Development Bank, there was a barrage of criticism and ridicule. Reference was made to “banq kwapo la”. It’s ok to criticize but let’s be civil about it. There were similar controversies when the Statue of Liberty was given to the people of the United States as a gift from the people of France. Some did not want a woman to symbolize American liberty. They wanted an American Civil War Hero instead. Americans have Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and others on their money. Who do we have?

They are Chinese Guardian Lions, commonly known as Foo Dogs. They are a symbol of protection and power both for the people using the structure they guard, and for the structure itself. Not an idol, more a superstition.

The Chinese have honoured Dominicans by adding their “blessing” to their work.

    February 2, 2012

Foreign Relations with any country does not mean Foreign Domination. It is about Respect for ones Sovereignty, respect for each others culture, Mutual AID and TRADE, Non-interference in each others domestic Affairs. Fundamental Universal principles as relates to foreign relations must be adhered to.

Symbols placed in strategic locations do have some impact on the minds of citizens. Local Cultural symbols, well exposed and erected, could play a positive role in helping the citizens to appreciate things local, and to love country more. The Chinese know that too well.

The trend is clear to see, otherwise we are blinded by God knows what. It is about a NEW COLONIAL scheme of things happening in Dominica, land of Kalinago, and Negre Mawon like Balla, Congoree, Pharcelle, Angelique, Pierre Colaire, E.O. Leblanc and all the other Freedom Fighters.

Certainly, the DLP Govt. seemed to agree with the Chinese erecting those lion statues on either end of their bridge (Chinese or Dominican?)
Couldn’t Govt. influence the Chinese to erect at least, a local symbol that reflects our local Dominican culture? A Sisserou Parrot or something local from our unique plant or animal kingdom that Dominicans could more identify with? Oh NO.

MENTAL SLAVERY is Rampant in our Land. As Dominicans get more and more accustomed of looking at those Lion statues, quick acceptance of those Chinese cultural symbols/icons as our own creeps in. Dominicans will become engulfed, appreciative of those foreign Chinese symbols. Mental control envelops the population, feeling the Chinese symbols are yours to embrace as if local. Of course, with the mind controlled, BUTTER-AROUND-CAT-MOUTH, the rest of the Body and your actions are all theirs. While you rejoice, Roseau is being swamped with Chinese businessmen and women. Local businesses/entrepreneurs are closed down and displaced. Some being immersed in that mental enslavement will claim that is not a problem, is competition or is locals fault, all kinds of nonsense in protection of the Chinese. A new kind of Slavery.

That new kind of Slavery is not about chattel slavery, but one of toatl control of the mind. In turn one becomes a ZOMBIE at the Mercy of the Master. ENSLAVED all over AGAIN and AGAIN. Seems some people have learnt nothing about our West Indian history of colonial domination, struggles against that Domination and the inhumane enslavement of our people and the impact that still persist today.

Emancipate yourselves from Mental Slavery. Free your Minds from third-class citizen status. Free yourselves from that Begging Mentality, hands outstretched, selling your Sovereignty and Dignity for a Few Dollars more. Where has our pride and love for our beautiful Nature Isle gone? Never again Slavery. None but ourselves could FREE our minds. Fear No More.

when you mentally enslave your self with the fear of other people, not understanding them, how sad that can be and by the way one of the things that can enslave humans is the holding on to old traditions. One more thing it is not outside forces and things that enslave humans

When I was at University I was doing a course where they explained to us the powerful influence group opinion can have on others…that basically most human beings are sheep..

They gave an example, that Coca Cola had introduced a new flavour which was initially well-received, until certain people who were against it started a campaign which gained momentum to the point where suddenly, most persons who had been ok with the new taste…suddenly decided that it was horrible . Coca Cola were forced to go back to the original taste…

My long-winded point is that many Dominicans are sheep and their shepherds are the UWP pundits with their anti-gov’t agenda on Q95. It also says, faith without works is DEAD! We claim that Dominica is a christian nation, can we ask for signs that Christianity is the order of the day in our country? People, we need to stop fooling ourselves, if we say we are a Christian Nation, we need to start acting like it is and stop saying that it is!

I am waiting to see if there will be any Chinese nationals rising to defend the meaning of those idols on that bridge. Their work is done and as far as they are concerned, they may even be onto the next project…while we sit and mull over this fork in the road. STOP TALKING! WE TALK TOO MUCH IN DOMINICA.

anti-hate what you were taught about coca-cola is half-truth… which makes it wrong…. go and research… i’m telling you what i saw and heard from a history channel documentary… coca-cola introduced the ‘new’ taste… which was different from the original (which they got rights to from a lady known as the coke lady lol)…. when they put out the new flavor in NEW cans which were white… the public was dissatisfied with the new taste… it wasn’t a group thing… yes a group started a campaign but it was because most consumers felt bad about it and they decided to organize simple pimple… it wasn’t a monkey see monkey do scenario…. in fact experts said it was the colour of the white cans which people are not used to which really sparked the controversy… since then coca-cola has never gone back to white cans again.. this was back in the 80’s…. so your professor used a half-truth example to state humans are sheep… my boy you should know that in life there will always be leaders and followers… you decide what you want to be…. even some leaders have to follow b4 they got to lead… peace

The following is a description of the “Lions” taken from WIKIPEDIA:
Chinese guardian lions or Imperial guardian lions, often incorrectly called “Foo Dogs” in the West, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. They have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits. Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance. The lions are always created in pairs, with the male resting his paw upon the world and the female restraining a playful cub that is on its back. They occur in many types of Chinese pottery and in Western imitations. Reference to guardian lions as dogs in Western cultures may be due to the Japanese reference to them as “Korean dogs” due to their transmission from China through Korea into Japan. It may also be due to the misidentification of the guardian lion figures as representing certain Chinese dog breeds such as the Chow Chow. The lions are traditionally carved from decorative stone, such as marble and granite or cast in bronze or iron. Because of the high cost of these materials and the labor required to produce them, private use of guardian lions was traditionally reserved for wealthy or elite families. Indeed, a traditional symbol of a family’s wealth or social status was the placement of guardian lions in front of the family home. However, in modern times less expensive lions, mass produced in concrete and resin, have become available and their use is therefore no longer restricted to the elite.

These Chinese lions have a meaning and they are pagan statues, I believe that they were placed there for a bigger reason than most people choose to argue about, something is unfolding in the world at this point in time and these statues are a pagan representation of that; most people know that but they give other things priority in there lives, I think that the statues should never have been placed there in the first place and should be removed. People, just try and take time out and read these few verses from the Bible(King James version Bible)because the time is now and most people seem not to be taking note – REVELATION 13:2 & REVELATION 13:14-15 & MARK 1:14-15 & ACTS 16:31

These complain about the dragon-like lions are ridiculous. Dominica is a country in the process of development and need all the assistance it can get. Presently China has stepped-up like they have been all over the world because of their superior economic power. China is not obligated to assist Dominica or any other country for a matter of fact. However they do so but with an agreement that they get something in return. If the season is for having a market for their goods and employment opportunity for their people on the projects, what is the basis for objections? Why should China provide assistance for free? China government has to think in the best interest of China and so they base their diplomatic relationship on what they can get in exchange. The great thing for China is that they planned their strategy well. While US was busy targeting oil rich countries under the auspices of war on terror, China was using it financial power and human resources to position itself worldwide by targeting underdeveloped countries. Note China did the same to developed nations. Many provinces in Canada have a China Town and China Malls. There are street signs in Chinese etc..It is the same in some American states. There is nothing wrong if China put their stamp on the bridge they provided it. They were involved in many other larger projects in Dominica which they did not place a stamp on. Bottom-line Dominica needs assistance for development and China is a willing party and it isn’t going to be for free. Therefore the focus should be to have a proper balance that allows survival of local small businesses while China can also get its own in exchange for assisting. It is salient that a happy medium exist.. That is a tall order but can be done it the government include/ included that in their developmental plans for Dominica. Many countries today are engaging China to create a partnership; Dominica is one of the fortunate to be taking advantage of this partnership. Dominicans look around you and see how much have been accomplished since the inception of that partnership and maybe then there will be a better appreciation and understanding of the importance in maintaining diplomatic relations with a world leading power. The North Americans and European nations have significantly cut funding for developing countries and the little they give today, demands we go against our morals and beliefs to be eligible. People stop with the negativity over China and Dominica diplomatic relationship it has thus far been fruitful. The oppositions are desperate to gain credibility and regain your trust but they have offered nothing better and thus far have proven to be more harmful to the people with their political approach.

Personally, I do not have a problem with the lions/dragons, whatever they’re referred to as, on the simple premise that they signify a contribution to the development of Dominica by the Chinese people. I think that’s great, this bridge was badly needed.

But let’s face facts – the real foundation of this discussion is the influx of Chinese in Dominica and they’re displacement of local businesses. Are there overwhelming amounts of Chinese? In relation to the entire population of indigenous Dominicans, no, but they’re conspicuous and insular and parasitic, and they’re taking over of traditional “mom and pop” businesses is rubbing people the wrong way. But my brethren and sistren, the fact remains they would not have been in a position to do that if we didn’t have a pliant population and a government that is complicit. The government is complicit because they want the Chinese money and they want to appear to be working on the development of the country. The population is pliant because, no matter how much they complain, they go to these Chinese business to shop. The laws of supply and demand in full effect – Dominicans demand the goods the Chinese have and at the prices they’re being sold, the Chinese happy to meet the demand at these prices. To the Chinese, making 10% profit on an item is fine, he/she can live with that – for a Dominican merchant, that may be ridiculous, and demands nothing short of a 20% profit. What’s going to happen in these situations? People are going to shop where it’s most cost-effective for their pockets, no matter how much they complain. Therefore, it is a bit disingenuous for us to complain – we cannot have it both ways. Reminds me of a situation a few years ago when, I believe it was Stop-n-Shop, opened and was selling fruits like grapes, apples etc, at what was then fairly reasonable prices, way below what they were being sold for at the time in other establishments. Oblivious to the fact that Stop-n-Shop is linked to a large US supermarket chain which allows them to benefit from the considerable leverage to negotiate volume prices with suppliers, leverage Dominican small business do not have, Dominicans protested, somehow implying that the fix was in, and that the prices were wrong and was going to drive other businesses out of business – in effect, demanding they pay more for these fruits. That was an incredible thing to witness. At times, we’re our own worst enemies.

First foo dogs then what buddhist statues. I have no issue with the foo dogs but Dominica is a nation of our own beliefs, rituals and culture that the young generation cease to uphold but embrase everything seen on tv. Why wasnt the statue of the national bird of Dominica? The 8 million dollars it took to build the bridge could have came from all the money the magistrate and law enforcers of Dominica charge and confiscate from offenders and druge dealers. Grand Bay I come out.

When a burgeoning nation like China invests money in another nation, it is within reason to expect some sybolic gesture affixed to a new structure built by the Chinese.
I really don’t care whether they placed a chicken or duck at both entrances. Bottom line is: this will definitely improve traffic flow in and out of Roseau. It also adds to the aesthetic of the area. Who cares?

    • Truthofthematter
      February 2, 2012

Just a symbolic gesture? A prominient aspect of Chinese culture, religion and national pride erected at one of the main exits of the capital but yet you look at it as merely a gesture? If dominica had received this as only a one time gift with no strings attached I would gladly appreciate your reasoning. But this is more than what most of us perceive.

Be thankful the bridge. It is a good thing. Way too late for this. These statues were in the design-should have been addresed then. Furthermore, beggers are not chosers-take the bridge and all that comes with it – but remember the good old Book says the borrower is slave to the lender (they did not lend us the bridge, but this situation is also quite fitting). All you aint see nothing yet. What you all will say when Dominica gets its own “China Town”? There is a China town a fews miles down the road in DC, and one in NY, and many other places. Chinese like to make their mark. If it was Dominica that gave the bridge to China wouldn’t we love a see a piece of Dominica art on it? I really don’t see the big deal with the statues. If you don’t worship them, then you are not performing idolatry. Some of you actually perform idolatry with your fancy cars.

Even though they help Dominica they have no right to impose their beliefs on DA and its nationals. Those lions sculptures do not belong in DA. They are also foreign to the Christian Faith. One glance at them and the majority at least will frown on them and abhor them. I will.

Dominica needs to wake up and smell the coffe and whats could really happen to our unspoiled Island. Can’t the government apply for grants like other countries do?? Why depend on one only, such as china to take over, has any of them taken the time to study the environment issues that plaques china, and countries like Canada, and U.S are not allowing them to carry their bad habits into their countries.Wake up DA wake up. There’s always a price to pay with them, but I guess some in authority already know and some of us are left to wonder. What beauty. As it is said, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” The lions are no beauty and by no means on a bridge in DA.
The help that the Chinese gives to DA, they have exceeded their help and ignored what Dominica stands for. It is a deliberate action on their part to place their stamp, their non-Christian beliefs in DA as if Dominica belongs to them. Dominicans who object are wise. In view of this, it is my opinion that a curse has been placed on Dominica.

Islandboy, please read on China and Taiwanese relations. Yes, the Chinese needed Dominica, St.Lucia and some of the other Caribbean votes in the UN to squeeze Taiwan so they wouldn’t get independence or lose their set in the UN. That is exactly what happened. Dominica had a Taiwanese Embassy when Eugenia Charles was PM. Then the Chinese bought their way into our Country for the UN vote and many sinister things to come. Be forewarned that there’s more to come.

Why are some people so hypocrite? If it was the Dominican Government that built a bridge in another country, we would have as well appreciate it and maybe even demand that some symbol(s) of ours be placed on that bridge. so what’s the whole thing about the lions. I find that it even uplifts the beauty of the bridge. And as one person stated, i am just interested in the traffic congestion decreasing. and you know what, that bridge is of better design and quality than the first bridge up there. yes the one they build too low and doh even give a space in d railing for in case the river get too high, so it will pass through.

I think that as Dominicans we have a right to questions what goes on in our country. We are not a communist state and therefore we are able to ask questions. We must understand that it is not because someone gives us something that gives the individual the right to do what ever they want with us.

It is only fair that we know why these statues were place there. We all know that the chineese are not a christian nation and as a result a statue being placed on our island should definitely make us ask questions.

Are we going to loose who we are because of assistance being received from China?

Out political affiliation should not limit our ability to question things that we see need questioning.

We are a democratic country and I therfore applaud the many persons who have questions. Having questions mean that we want to be informed of what is going on within our country.

Let us respect our fellow Dominican’s right to ask questions, express their views and make comments. It may sound silly to some of us but we must remember that we are all Dominicans and must agree to disagree sometimes.

Some of you talk as if blogs were not meant for debates or discussions. I’m just saying. If somebody makes a point and it’s not in keeping with a certain group then all hell breaks loose. The advantage of an education is not to be hidden under a bed or step over others but to be applied. While someone might see the Foo Dogs and call them harmless lions, others may choose to delve into the symbolism behind it. Why can’t DOMINICANS grasp the concept of discussion? It’s dishearting to read the ignorance that comes from so many people, simply because they are offended that someone makes a comment they percieve to be against their party on either side. Half of you here I guarantee had no idea what the symbols were muchless the meaning. I could care less myself, raised in Dominica, born in the UK returned to the UK, but I have family and friends on Dominica so it’s in my interest to keep up with the island. But alas it can be an embarassment when one comes here to read the crass and low down steez that comes from people who have long been toted as brilliant and informed! Now go ahead dig in

What I am getting is that, in our own country we are settling for china making Dominica look like them – WE ARE LOSING EVEN OUR IDENTITY AND WE SIT AND APPLAUD.

Porthmouth, Londonderry, princess margaret Hospital are all british names, their brand to remind us that were were colonies of the crown, our forefathers were beaten and bruised to build their empire… thses were gift aint they? worth lot more than the bridge but still we fought for abolition of slavery and independence. We were on the road to rename major schools and roads after our national heroes and patriots… a symbol of patriotism and hope for our future generation and development..
now for a mere gift of a bridge China has to impose it brand in Dominica while our tax payers pay back by buying all their worthless good, packing up our wastage disposal site(labas). this is the new form of colonialisation my country men, that script was written many years ago… dont be blind to it because you are a labourite, emancipate yourself from mental slavery. I do think that those lions are unnecessary and do not project Dominica’s heritage. DNO, the poll question will lead to an arbitrary result.

Why ask us if we think the Dominican authorities should have put the lions on the bridge?

They could have put anything on the bridge. They could have put nothing at all. So if I felt personally, that I would rather a cat, I would answer NO, they should not have put the lion. But that does not say anything.

The fact is they put the dogs, it’s a dog not a lion. A more suitable and relevant question would be whether the dogs bother me. I would say NO.

If it bother most of us then put a sisserou, a manicou, agouti, jacko, whatever. It will still bother us.

In Chinese Mythology, Fu Dogs or Foo Dogs, also known as Chinese guardian lions are said to have protective powers. Foo Dogs are traditional guardians of temples, palaces, tombs, offices, and well-to-do homes. They always appear in pairs, the left side representing the female and the right side representing the male.

    What Are Foo Dogs?
Foo dogs or fu dogs are considered to be sacred dogs that used to guard the Buddhist temples. Foo dogs have a close relationship with Buddhism as they have an appearance like lions and were considered as protectors of the religious buildings and defenders of law. There is a conception associated with foo dogs that these can shun away evil spirits from a place, this is why one can commonly find their statues at temple gates and tomb doors. As foo dogs are closely related to the history and tradition of China, they are given in the form of statues.Foo dog statues are in two common forms, stone foo dogs and jade foo dogs. Stone foo dogs are considered to be a feng shui item that prevents all the negative energies from entering any premises. Stone foo dogs are available in different materials such as marble, granite and other stones. The carvings present on the stone foo dogs have a great relevance as many people prefer to buy the ones that have religious Buddhist carvings in form of mantras carved on these.

Traditionally these foo dog statues were either made up of bronze or jade. In most of the jade foo dog statues, the male Fu Dog holds a globe under his right paw, which signifies control over his domain/protection of his home. The female Fu Dog holds a cub under her left paw, signifying strong maternal protective instincts. Jade foo dog statues are also considered as a symbol of elegance and power. There is one more thought related to buying a jade foo dog statue, it is believed that always a pair should be bought as this brings in power and stability. Usually the male statue is bigger than the female one for easy identification. The make fu dog is a symbol of yang whereas the female one represents yin. The complete pair tends to balance the energies, allowing only the positive ones to make an entry into a home.

In both the jade and stone fu dog statues, the heads are tilted inwards, demonstrating that a close eye is being kept on evil spirits, assuring that complete peace is maintained.

God, the Creator and Ruler of the world, at the helm, the top, sideways, in-between and below. By no means lions which are dangerous creatures. They are worthless in protecting anyone.
The only protection and from evil spirits Dominica, which is a Christian country is in dire need of is God’s protection. Lions can never protect them. You know what lions represent. They eat humans as prey. They are no protectors.
If a Christian is in danger, will they think of and call on a lion? Oh my! They will be devoured by the lion.

Chinese guardian lions, known as Shishi (Chinese: 石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally “stone lion”) or Imperial guardian lion, and often incorrectly called “Foo Dogs” in the West, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China.

Dominicans tend to miss what’s important and turn trivial or non-important matters into controversies. The lion statues is not the issue. The issue is whether the bridge was a priority. I maintain it was not. It does not address a critical need. The $8 Million should have been spent on priorities like repairing farm access roads, stabilizing areas prone to landslides that put people’s lives and property at risk and providing low-interest financing for heavily indebted tourism facilities to help safeguard jobs in the sector.

Dominicans, let us focus on the substantive issues like jobs, protection of life and property, and productivity improvements.

I find this highly offensive. First of all the bridge is NOT a GIFT to the people of Dominica it’s part of a LOAN PROJECT so that in itself is grossly and deliberately misleading. Our Journalists so lazy why don’t they ask the real questions.

2ndly UNLESS a building is owned by Chinese even in the US they can’t put their symbols on it, what is Dominica doing with lions head chinese symbols on it’s bridge. Dominicans hate to read, and those who do feel empowered not to address these issues, but to keep information to themselves. This is not just a symbol. It’s highly offensive and should be taken down. If it’s one time I will encourage vadalism is for this. We have our own national symbols..FOO DOGS are aka Shishi are stamps of ownership and submission by Chinese imperialists. Wherever they establish a china town, they erect two guardian Foo Dogs. So what does this mean that ROSEAU is now a CHINA TOWN? and people are tolerating this rubbish and listening to uniformed Blackmore. Long after the PM and Blackmore and his cabinet departs from this earth and those of us who because of political affiliation hold on to denial these symbols and chinese invasion will take root on Dominica.

Tell them try it in any other place. Why not our Sisserou? why not two slaves with the chains at their feet showing we are liberated? why not trees to represent our forest? I Agree, when you give a gift they have a right ot place their symbols where ever they want but IT IS NOT A GIFT… so please take this Lions… out of our bridge… I am grateful for the job they have done but the Bridge nor Roseau is theirs… It is ours and our childrens, children to come… TAKE IT DOWN… VANDALIZE IT I say…

reading this comment gives me a tat of hope. there are minds in Dominica who still think alike…At least there arre people on this country who recognise that we are children of the most brutal and inhumane history ever written….
We will not tolerate it modern version..
Amen my brother. I will join in praying, GOD HELP DOMINICA

So what if it was a donkey? Stupes. Just be thankful for the bridge so you can head home after work quicker.

Do your homework jenny, please READ and use a dictionary. If you only knew what those symbols were you too would be angry. So the next time you see these dogs or dragons you will think twice. Go find a library or a dictionary and LEARN SOMETHING PLEASE!!!!!!!

    Much ado about nothing.

I’ve seen other nations place their symbols on projects all over.

Dominicans just like to shoogonay caka as they say. Have to make an issue about everything and anything, but can’t simple appreciate something.

There has to be a bit of give and take. Are the statues going to prevent you from driving/ walking on the bridge/ I think not!

I wonder if all those who complain would have agreed to pay higher taxes to fund the $8m in construction cost so as not to have the lions at the entrance to the bridge.

  207. As it is
    February 2, 2012

If Dominicans have time to sit and complain about lion on bridge. I give up.

  208. Hmm

Can you read the Chinese lettering on the entrance to the “Chinese” state palace? And you really think that that palace or the grounds belong to the people of DA anymore? Get wise.

Ignorance runs rampant in Dominica, Really!!
Ignorance is bliss down there. Dominicans are in real trouble. The Chinese are not in Dominica for any simple reason you know; they are there because there is something they want and that thing is the country of DA and slavery of the people there. I just have a bad feeling that I will not be able to retirre in my homeland of Dominica. SO SAD!!!

You are writing this comment and calling people ignorant is like the devil telling other people they are evil, how more arrogant can you be. Oh that bad feeling you you mentioned you got of returning back to your home land well it is not a bad feeling at all, it is just that you who cannot differentiate ignorance and reality.

@Ka Yes, lions mean strength but, who’s strength? Dominica or China? We are such ignorant and hungry people. We abandoned the land and waiting on our family that live overseas to support us and crooked Politicians to beg the worlds most hated Dictators to build roads, bridges and and whatever else we beg for. I am so ashamed of the Caribbean Islands. People in politics want to get rich fast and the country be damned. They are not stealing our money because there is no money to steal. They are just selling our Islands to the highest bidders and pocketing the cash. Lord Help Us!!!
