Local Film Crowdfunding Project launched

Bouzai Productions
Harold Sealy (back) & Clement Richards of Bouzai Productions

Bouzai Productions, a Film Production enterprise operating locally for some 6 years now, has launched a Crowdfunding Campaign to finance its latest Documentary project.  Crowdfunding refers to an innovative alternative financing method through which individuals or groups (i.e. a “Crowd”) make direct financial contributions to projects of their choice on different websites, in exchange for various benefits or “Goods”.

Bouzai Productions has decided to use this route to obtain funds for the production of an exciting and informative Documentary series entitled “A Road to De Gaulle: Free French Fighters on Dominica and St. Lucia During World War II”. This 2-Part Documentary highlights the important (but largely unrecognized) contribution made by Dominica and St. Lucia to General Charles De Gaulle and the Free French Forces, which in turn assisted the liberation of France and the eventual Allied victory over Nazi Germany. It also brings to the fore one of the most significant Black Generals in history, General  Adolphe-Félix-Sylvestre Éboué, who was born in French Guyana (or Cayenne), and who is possibly the individual who made the single most important  contribution to General Charles De Gaulle’s elevation to political and military prominence. Because of his crucial contribution to the Free French Forces during WWII General Eboue is currently the only Peron of Color to be buried in France’s Pantheon of Heroes in Paris.

One additional, but equally important objective of this project, is to make the above information available to as wide a spectrum as possible, which will be facilitated by using the format of film, and making this Documentary available on the Internet for viewing and download.

Already some prominent individuals and entities have joined hands with Bouzai Production in support of this important historical filmic venture including the Alliance France De La Dominique; Cadence Maestro, Gordon Henderson (who has already contributed “Beyond the Call of Duty”!); Dominica’s Lady of Song Ophelia and husband Mark; local Historian Dr. Lennox Honychurch; Dominica’s Ambassador to the OECS, Mr. Felix Gregoire,  Tim Durand and Dominica News Online.

And although we do not wish to speak out of turn (as this is still not confirmed) it would be remiss of us not to also indicate that we expect the Government of Dominica to contribute significantly to this activity as well, given the importance of the subject material both to our history and future prospects.

The “Road to De Gaulle” Crowdfunding Campaign was launched on the RocketHub Crowdfunding website, which was chosen because it is one of the best in the business, and also because of its linkages with the US-based A&E Television Network.

We urge everyone to view the project’s Intro Video on the Bouzai Productions Channel on YouTube,  and to continue to the Crowdfunding Project Page at RocketHub to obtain more information – and possibly to make a contribution!

Meanwhile individuals with information, photos, /or mementos relating to the persons who travelled from Martinique and Guadeloupe to Dominica and St. Lucia between 1940 and 1943 (or about WW II in this area generally) are requested to urgently contact Clement Richards at (767) 448 5278or 277 2911; or email [email protected].

Let’s all come together to help Bouzai Productions build a “Road to De Gaulle”!

Martinique & Guadeloupe should also assist as their history is intertwined with Dominica’s & St Lucia’s. I also hope from this endeavour that the visa story to enter France will be a little less tedious! .

To be honest, I am a bit wary after all that hype last July about a fellow from London with Dominican roots, Richard Etienne, wanting to make a documentary about Dominica and looking for the public to give him £5,000.What happened to that? Guess mister just wanted a free holiday. Hope this venture does better.

Good initiative to showcase the importance of the islands in contributing towards the success of France. We should also encourage the documentation in film of the lake road experience of the people of the eastern district who had to travel for miles in the mountains of Grand Fond to Laudat and then to Roseau to sell their produce. This historic journey should be documented in the journals of Dominican history. I wish the group well and see this as a positive step in the right direction.
