Man rescues manicous in Roseau

It is not a scene you see every day in the middle of Roseau in broad daylight.

On Monday, April 24, passersby were treated to the interesting scene of a man rescuing some baby manicous from their dead mother.

An eyewitness said the man discovered the dead manicou in a drain near the First Caribbean Bank and close inspection revealed it had babies on its back.

And so the unidentified man sprang into action. He pulled the dead mother manicou from the drain and proceeded to rescue the babies, even wiping them clean with tissue paper and placing them in a box.

“I heard someone said they called Forestry Divison to come for them,” the eyewitness said.

The eyewitness stated that observing what took place was interesting and fun.

“Most times we see animals being rescued on TV. Seeing this one in town was fun,” she said.

Wait, a pregnant manicou walk all through the concrete of Roseau to FCIB without detection? So the whole of Roseau was asleep while manicou roaming the street going to the ATM. The police commissioner should have an investigation on how this breach of security happened.
I mean, the location of FCIB is not on the boundary of any bush, I can understand the State House or other properties bordering green areas but in the middle of Roseau, awa, things getting real rough in DA or things really nice boy, that even manicou trying to get it share of CBI. I was told it lost its way, it was really heading to the Red Clinic.

Please use the English name for Manicou. It is called a OPOSSUM.

This isn’t the 1800’s nor the 1900’s. Please lead by example. Teach one each one.
    Thank you.

    • April 28, 2017

Hush your mouf Raechelle with your English name. People like allu pretend too much. BTW, use correct grammar: It is NOT a OPOSSUM.,but, AN OPOSSUM or A MANICOU. I would slap you.

Lets hope that something more serious is not at play here. If manicou is coming into town with babies it means that something is happening in the forest that is affecting their survival and forcing them to escape. It is unlikely to be destruction of their habitat since there are forest reserves in and around the Roseau Valley area that prevents deforestation etc. Lets hope its not signs of volcanic activity. In Montserrat this was a very early sign that something was happening under the ground. The forest had become too hot for wildlife to live and they were seen prowling around town in broad day light. All this happened long before seismic equipment was able to detect any activity. Please take this seriously people. This is too serious for feel good sentiments …….

We have some walking on the security fence at the Hospital .They do not have to be in Rain forest they are thriving in Goodwill

    • yes
      April 26, 2017

Like you said, they didnt have the proper equipment to detect it. But Dominica has, and often researchers from across the Caribbean come to Dominica to study the volcanic activities

Kudos to you sir. Take a bow. This is further testimony to the work, though unappreciated, of the forestry division in continuing to raise awareness of the importance of wildlife and it’s sustainable management on the island.

It is news and a good story. A documentary or movie should be made of it with the rescuer. Some people never know they could become famous overnight by just performing a good deed. People love animal stories. This would be a good one.
I think the mother lost her way and, of course was weak after giving birth, hungry and dehydrated, what with the little ones on her back. She was a good mother who did not abandon her little ones. She died performing her motherly obligation.
They should not be returned to the wild so soon. They must first be nourished and grow a little. When they are strong enough to live independently in the wild, then return them there.
The one who rescued them performed a good deed, taking the time to clean them up and ensuring they are comfortable. He has a compassionate heart for animals. Laurels to you! Hope your future life goes well.

We live in Brooklyn NY. This morning about 12:45 there was a manicou on the sidewalk in front of our home. We see them here quite often. As more and more of their natural habitat is destroyed in the name of progress, they have to venture into the inner city areas to forage for food etc.
You all will see them more and more for the same reasons. We have to stop destroying the natural habitat of the wild.

    • April 28, 2017

Brooklyn full of manicou, the only difference is that they carry guns and kill each other.

There are always negative people all over , and always trying to infect others with their negativity, I love stories like that , let us love life , respect live , and appreciate the good people do for people or animals, I bet the negative people eating meat , but will never say thank you to the people killing it , preparing it, and sending it in the shop to sell for you to eat , shame one you all
