The group of men here known as CARIMAN says it is embarking on a series of projects, including one that’ll focus on the family structure.
It says the plan of activities was developed at a recent one-day symposium on violence.
“The intention is to address the traditional values. We intend to work with families, Ministry of Education and the community in collaboration with the Dominica Planned Parenthood Association. The private and public sectors will also be engaged,” CARIMAN President Thomas Holmes said of a Character Counts programme expected to be the basis for a value-oriented campaign.
It’ll emphasise Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
“We believe that inculcating these values in our daily lives will help reduce ill-discipline and violence, especially among our youth, and young males in particular. This will be piloted in two communities,” Holmes disclosed.
The group also intends initiating a prison project to work with young inmates to help them develop and maintain a positive self image.
CARIMAN says it also has plans to introduce an anti-bullying programme, one that will initially be piloted at a primary school.
And in keeping with a recommendation at its recent symposium, the group also intends utilizing music to promote positive relationships and also to promote “a message of respect and tolerance through positive lyrical content”.
Perhaps if Fathers were actively involved in the day to day raising and supporting of their children, there would be no need for a “Program” to instill strong morals and a desire to learn in the youth. I’m just saying.
Way to go
Very positive initiative by CARIMAN group. I congratulate you men for taking such an important step to stop the flow of criminal activities and low moral standard that are being executed by our young men of today.
The values of yester-years need to be pounded into these young boys to remind them of how peaceful D/ca was in the 60’s 70′ and 80’s.
What really is affecting our young men today is that they do not have much alternatives. They pretty much do and copy what they see on the streets.
So lets us form positive images and give them the chance to choose better.
I hope the Newtown community can be involved. Something must be done to save the minds of those children.
