Mervin Paul to head DBS Radio

Mervin Paul currently heads GIS
Mervin Paul currently heads GIS

Reports reaching DNO indicate that a new person is expected to take up the post of manager at state-owned DBS Radio.

Reports are that at a Cabinet meeting it was decided that Senior Information Officer (SIO) at the Government Information Service (GIS), Mervin Paul will from June 1, 2014 take up that post.

Paul has been heading GIS since 2005.

He is an open advocate of the ruling DLP and has even expressed a desire to contest the Cottage seat in the upcoming general election over current MP, Reginald Austrie.

Paul’s controversial revelation so annoyed Austrie that he stated, “I will be the candidate for the DLP in the upcoming election and I will have no primary to decide who the candidate will be.”

Paul will replace Brian Meade.

When contacted for comments on the matter Paul said, “I can’t confirm anything and I have nothing else to say on the matter.”

Labor party continue to put unprofessional and incompetent people to head the states institution all because of politics. I don’t mind ou put your labor rites but when you put incompetent persons too run these institutions you are destroying the institutions all because of politics.

This is going to come back and bite Dominicans in the rear end because at the end of it all these institutions will loose their way become irrelevant and will be destroyed. LABOUR PARTY STOP DESTROYING OUR INSTITUTIANS.

I see a lot of people are not happy about the idea of hiring an open Labourite. Are we saying that the government should not hire Labourites even if they are qualified for the job?

Skeritt isn’t as dolt as some members of the opposition claim him to be. In the event Skeritt loses the General Election, he is fortifying certain top key Government positions with his allies. For instance, Savarin was appointed President for approximately five years. Charlie Jong was given a contract for twelve months. Mervin Paul will be given a contract maybe for five years. It is rumored, Kamala will be the one replacing Paul.

He was not even an employee when he anchored a show on Thursday nights. He would cancel the late night BBC broadcast to play reggae music. I considered this a rude and disrespectful act. Now that he is going to head the station I believe I should have to acquire a good short-wave radio…good bye to late-night DBS.

Mervin as we all know is a open supporter of the government . If he was not and open supporter ,I would not have a isssue with his appointment. Their will be no transperancy.

What about in the body of the article where Reggie says defan ‘I will be the candidate and I will not be part of no primary’ and no dog back. Isidore had back and forth until press conference declaway and Carlisle was at his best – but look how Regie scandal was swept under the carpet by Carlisle – I tell you monkey know exactly what tree to climb; good luck Carlisle according to MATT the one that always has the big stories; but big stories my foot.

If you all haven’t gotten the message by now, let me make it clear:

Democracy as we have known it in Dominica is completely over if the DLP is re-elected to office. Notice that the injustices they are undertaking are now in plain sight. They recognize that institutions in Dominica are so weak, they can do whatever they want with no regard to what citizens or the law says. The country is so polarized by party loyalty that half the population will support any form of injustice if the DLP does it.

Pay attention my people! The Chronicle was recently purchased by the DLP, they have Kairi, GIS and now DBS. They have won lawsuit after lawsuit against anyone who speaks against them. Earlier this week a magistrate even had the audacity to threaten media not to publicize the names of convicted sexual predators. If we can’t even speak out against a convicted criminal attacking our kids, what next?

Don’t sleep Dominica! Wake the heck up! Support who you want but don’t let them abuse you, give you a 6 for a 9, disrespect and denigrate you with a few $$ for the future of our beautiful land.

    Enough is enough!

He would not be the first neither the last to be hand picked from among political ranks for such position. He has done a remarkable job at GIS, hence the Prime Minister has full confidence in his ability to head the State owned radio station. I wish you well. Do you very best. Be fair, be just! CONGRATULATIONS!

Come on people! The fact that the guy is a skerritt lapdog is a non-issue and should not be the reason to oppose. Every ruling party has chosen persons who support them as manager of DBS. What is different about this one is that this person has no experience and no qualification, gained through work or otherwise to hold the office. The story says that he headed GIS but did he really? What has he accomplished in that position? Has he stood out as a performer? And why if he is that good is skerritt paying his friend Charles Jong $96,000 to be at GIS? This is the lowest we could ever get in Dominica, I say shame on those nut-less men in the cabinet who refuse to stand up to skerritt.

    May 15, 2014

This is the doing of a leader who is extremely insecure. He needs to have people who he thinks will sing his praises and more importantly PROTECT him in high offices. The question which begs to be asked is….with all that money why is he still so scared and insecure? Huh.

Square Peg in Round Hole. A Classic example once again. The cabal is unrelenting in its taking control of the media to fulfill their and only their political twists and turning of the truth. The cabal purchased the Chronicle newspaper, as part of its plan to prevent genuine. dissenting views and expressions regarding the mismanagement, corruption, bad Governance and so on.

Elections, without reforms or changes to the election process will never be Free and Fair. There must be a reason why any Govt. would stubbornly refuse to carry out Electoral Reform to ensure elections are free and Fair. Even though Dominicans have been pleading for Years, No response. Total disrespect.

No Reform. Is now DBS Radio will not allow equal time for all political Parties, especially in an election campaign. What about Campaign financing? Any big Time Mafia or drug Lord could put $$$$$$$$$$ into a campaign and control the country. Pay Back. Remember who put thousands into DLP campaign in 2005? Didn’t that Bajan get a Diplomatic Passport? Who gave it to him, nuh?

What about Voter ID Cards that the Electoral Commission recommended Years ago, but received no funding by Skerrit’s DLP Govt.? Is the Voters’ List cleaned or being cleaned? 65,000 names on the List in a population of about 69,000? Don’t we want to prevent Fraud and have elections Free and fair and open up DBS to all, since DBS is the Nation’s Radio station? But No surprise. They all ‘fraid. they cannot afford to lose the elections. They have too much to lose.

Further proof of the workings of a Few, who feel they have so much power, that they could impose on the people.

@ Dr B: have the lunatics taken over the asylum? Piece by piece, will they get rid of everyone with some degree of independence, integrity, and decorum and replace them with more ‘advocates”?

The appointment of an alleged “open advocate” of a political party as general manager at the Nation’s Station and the alleged earmarking of another for GIS are the hallmarks for a very sizzling narrative, indeed! It looks like the Kingmaker has been hard at work. And what a talent the Member for Cottage is! Seems as if his self-proclaimed jungle training is a gift that keeps on giving. Allegedly, his skills also played a role in the automatic appointment of an Ambassador from a neighboring constituency who he felt would become a threat, And what better way to preempt that threat than appoint him as an envoy? Yet the member obsesses over trivial things like “cow meat” . Like my daddy Sparrow sang about the Congo Man, I envy our jungle-trained man.(Not)

IT’S THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

    • Simply the Truth

Q95 is the most listened to Radio Station on the planet? This is an exaggeration. You are talking about D/ca and D/ca alone; not the entire world. Well, it probably transmits via the Internet and some D/cans listen to it.
I listen to a US Catholic Radio Station, 101.7 FM and I do think it is the most listened to Radio Stn on the planet. The programs are broadcasted on all US Catholic Radios which also transmit throughout the world.
The Holy Mass was just celebrated from Buffalo , NY and now the Holy Rosary is on which will be followed by Sister Shields. She is a great Nun. I love listening to her.
Some people from the US, Great Britain – Europe and Canada also listen to this Radio Stn which is an affiliation of the Eternal Word Television Network – EWTN Global Catholic Radio. They call-in and speak on the shows, voice their concerns and ask questions. It is also listened to by fallen away Catholics, non-Catholics, non-Christians, atheists and agnostics. They also call-in to the Radio Stn and are welcomed to do so. Catholics return to the faith and some non-Catholics, non-Christians do convert to the Catholic faith eventually.
On some programs Catholics are told not to call-in and that they only want to hear from non-Catholics. They do call in. Right now such a program is on. Interesting isn’t it?
Therefore, tell me, is Q95 the most listened to Radio Stn on the planet? I doubt this very much. This is not to debase this Radio Station but based on what you stated as I read, I had to inform you accordingly. In fact correct you.
There are times I listen to a Toronto Radio Stn which broadcasts only the news, the weather forecast and traffic conditions in addition to advertisements.
It is nothing like Q95. It does not lambaste the government but broadcasts the news as informed and heard. This is another Radio Stn I listen to but mainly as mentioned it is the US Catholic Radio Station. I consider it a faith-booster and builder. You are missing out on godliness, spiritual enlightenment and progess by not listening to (not being able to) such an excellent Radio Station.
I like peace and tranquility which is what I also derive from listening to it. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is peace, sweet peace.
I would think the broadcasters on Q95 will incite nationals to hate and a specific Party. You cannot get this type of peace and tranquility by listening to Q95. As you proclaim it, does it lead you to God and to eternal salvation?

Let this go in one ear and come out the other. People could be hypocrites. Who is dictating to whom?
The lives some people live, if they do not dictate to one person or one particular person they dictate to others such as their wives/husbands and for years. In brief, this has caused some to get sick and go insane if they do not separate or divorce.
There are many dictators among the public than there are in the government, the latter, if none at all except for the warped minds of some people who assume that the government is a dictator, some of whom who think they are more intelligent and can run the country better. They forget that they are not the government and do not know their place. They lack humility.
Go to Russia, Cuba, Iran, the Middle East in general and the likes and you will note and experience what dictatorship is. It may be what some of you need so that you could appreciate what you have in Dominica. Ingratitude is a hell of a thing. There is a price to pay for ingratitude which will come in time.

Three tables, all the same size and covered with a blue, green and red tablecloth. I did get the message, very strong. We are one people no matter what political party we support. Personally I don’t care about what colour T-shirt you wear or whether you show saw ora shoe. It is DOMINICA, all of of Dominica I care about. We are too small to be divided and whoever does the best for ALL of us will get my vote. Simple.

“Paul will replace Brian Meade who after two years was sacked over alleged differences with the board chairman and deputy.”

If is one thing I am certain of is that Brian Mead have a solid background in Radio, and Television, and journalism, and without a doubt he was never going to become a “yes man” to anybody. Chairman of the board, and deputy of the devil it would not matter, the man has been around; I doubt he would become a poppet to any politician, or anyone else in Dominica.

I remember him when he was a News Anchor at Radio Antilles on the island of Montserrat, and he was very loved by Dominicans then. I met him when he worked for ZAL Television on the island of Antigua, no longer called ZAL since the Antigua has taken it over. He anchored news there also, and I am sure he was capable of handling advertisement, and commercials: it was on such occasion I met him when I worked of O. D Brisbane in Antigua, and went and gave him an advertisement for Finlathers Scotch Whisky.

That was more than forty (40) years ago.

I suppose what you have experienced in the place of your birth is the reason many of us professionals would rather die in places such as the United States, England, Canada, and even Antigua, and Montserrat, a hundred time plus, rather than return to Dominica, and die there once!

It is a fact that DBS listenership has gone down drastically, and I do not believe it revolves around Brian Meade. The contents in radioland have undergone many changes in recent years. Radio is now more instant. We want to know what happens on the hour every hour and DBS has not been able to shed its bureaucracy and micro-management by the State in order to bring listeners what they wish to hear. It’s a joy to listen to the other radio stations. They bring you so much of what is happening out there while DBS continues like a BIG immovable icon. Mervin Paul does not have the liberality and diversity of mind to make any meaningful change at DBS. The State Radio needs to open itself up to the residents of this country who need to share their stories. Confining DBS to the releases of the DLP is stupid. The station continues to lose more grounds to the private stations.

We have Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). It is government owned. You should try listening to it sometime, probably over the Internet.
How about BBC – British Broadcasting Corp.? They are all government-owned.
What do you expect of a government-run radio station? Surely, you should know better than that.
I think you people do not like a “cool broadcasting”. You like loud talking and laughing and what which will keep you awake, deafen you and disrupts your mind to the extent of dislike. Such radio stations are not all the best ones and better broadcasting ones. They also incite nationals to hatred.
Furthermore you have the right to listen to whichever radio station you wish just as viewing TV channels. Why criticize the PM’s decision to appoint someone else and DBS? I really do not see your point.

I agree with regards to the content of DBS’ programming. DBS is boring to listen to. No new programmes that excite the ears of the listeners. There are not even lively debates among different groups on public issues. The only programme I listen to on DBS when I can is the creole programme.

Apart from academic qualification and experience there are other intangible qualities employers look for. I have seen employees challenge these hirings and lost.
