Today is National Community Day of Service

Today the populace will beautify and cleanup their communities for National Community Day of Service instead of undertaking the custom of road rehabilitation and infrastructural projects.

The Ministry of Community Development through its Local Government Department has provided annually to village councils and registered community-based organizations/groups/committees steel, cement and tarish at their request to execute projects within their communities.

However, based on a policy decision taken by the Cabinet, this form of assistance will not be delivered for three years.

An estimated budget of $250,000 was allocated yearly towards Community Day of Service projects.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit had announced in September that no one was authorized to use money to purchase materials, therefore communities should not wait for them.

The Dame Eugenia Charles administration in 1981 set aside the day to instill the practice of volunteerism among Dominicans, and allow them to participate in community work.

remember $250,000.00 was already budgeted for community day of service and they had to refund the treasury much more than that, so ppl open you all ears for next year’s budget……….see if there will be a requirement asking for another lump sum for 2011 community day of service…………….next level again.

when will the people of my beloved country stop stretching their hands for hand outs? im pretty sure that there are projects that Dominicans can undertake without any G overnment assistance.lets stop behaving like leeches ,wake our lazy behinds and do something for the good of the land.its a poverty mentality thats affecting the populace thats why they keep on waiting on assistanc from Government. No money doesnt necessarily mean no projects what happen to creativity? plant a tree, paint a wall, go assist the elderly and those who are physically handicapped .thats what community service is all about. thank you and God bless BEAUTIFUL DOMINICA

Community day of service is a day the people from the community should come together and contribute. Dont depend on the gov’t to do that… U guys should be able to raise funds to do different things, be it planting flowers, painting a church or public place, cleaning up the community etc. That is COMMUNITY SERVICE. WHY DUM-INI-CANS like to blame the gov’t and most importantly skerrit for every thing that goes wrong. Stop acting like leaches and be self dependent. There is nooo reason for the gov’t to be providing materials on CDS day, the people in the communities should be raising funds year round to go towards some kind of project today. Why we have that slavey mentality still i don’t know…

Why would the Skerrit adminstration seek to implement a policy that will decrease the enthusiasm and volunteerism of well meaning citizens to contribute in community development?

WE SHOULD BE PLANTING FLOWERS AND BEAUTIFYING DOMINICA ALL YEAR ROUND. COMMUNITY DAY OF SERVICE SHOULD BE FOR SAND, CEMENT, STEEL AND COUDE MAIN WITHOUT ANY SURCHARGING OF PUBLIC OFFICERS. CABINET OR SOMEBODY HAS CLEARLY LOST IT. LET US ADMIT THAT! I CALL FOR A STATEMENT TO BE MADE BY DOMINICANS ON THE FARCE AND SELL OUT!
