The 2015 Nature Island Literary Festival (NILF) & Book Fair was officially opened on Friday evening at the UWI Open Campus Grounds.

The opening ceremony which started at 7:00 pm, featured special presentations from both visiting and local talent. The Book Fair was also officially opened last night.

Activities continue today, Saturday, August 8, 2015 with free workshops by internationally acclaimed authors, playwrights, poets and publishers including Oonya Kempadoo, Vladimir Lucien, Christopher DeRiggs, Jean Barfluer, Faizah Tabasamu, Travis Weekes and Dominica’s own Alick Lazare.

On Saturday afternoon, there will be dramatic readings, presentations and films as well as Open Mic sessions throughout the day.

On Sunday morning, patrons can look forward to important discussions on maroon history & geographical sites and discussions on the issue of sustainable development.

The Festival, under the theme: “Beyond the Green: Nature, Environment & Caribbean Literature,” kicked off with a Book Launch and Play event on Thursday, August 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Alliance Française.

The play, directed by Alwin Bully, is based on the book, “Your time is Done Now – Slavery, Resistance & Defeat: The Maroon Trials of Dominica 1813-1814” edited by Polly Pattullo.

Thursday’s activities also included an event dubbed “Word, Sound & Power” which featured many local poets and musicians at the Anchorage Hotel at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon, the Festival moves to Purple Turtle Beach in Portsmouth for more exciting activities, presentations and music by Ti-Orkest Band.
