The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) is calling on Dominicans to avoid becoming complacent even though the hurricane season has been relatively calm so far.
In a press release, the ODM said Dominica is still not out of the woods and is far from being so.
The Tropical Atlantic Season is currently approaching its most active period, late August to early September, and according to the ODM, citizens should be strengthening plans and remaining steadfast in their preparedness and readiness for any eventuality.
In an attempt to assist in preparedness the ODM will be hosting a course in “Community Emergency Response Team Training” (CERT) for about 30 persons from selected communities around Dominica.
This CERT training is slated from September 9th to 13, 2013.
From July 29th to August 2nd the ODM held a CERT training in five communities around Dominica for the first time. It provided an opportunity for communities to become more self-reliant during disasters and also exposed individuals to basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
The training programme culminated in participants taking part in a number of physical outdoor activities.
The CERT training is supported by the Italian International Centre on Environmental Monitoring (CIMA) Research Foundation through the Enhancing Resilience to Reduce Vulnerability in the Caribbean Region (ERC) Project; and CIDA, UK Aid from DFID, AUS AID through the CDM-HIP Programme and is being implemented by CDEMA.
Thanks for the reminder, I was already beginning to become complacent. I will immediately re-check my emergency plans and supplies.
The ODM is being very proactive and on the ball, I trust that citizens are attentive and take heed….
Warns of complacensy or against complacency???????
I wish I could afford all those preparations. It is not easy to spend extra when you live from hand to mouth.
Very good point and timely reminder.
