The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has donated two DelAgua Testing Kits to Dominica for monitoring the quality of water quality on the island.
One Kit was presented to the Ministry of Health while the other went to the Dominica Water & Sewerage Company (DOWASCO).
Following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika in August 2015, Dominica’s water supply was severely affected and the water quality was compromised.
“PAHO continues to assist Dominica in the area of public health and today we add to that list two water testing kits for continued monitoring of water quality,” Country Programme Specialist for PAHO, Shirley Augustine said at a press conference at the Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) building at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) on Tuesday.
According to her, the kits contain all the necessary equipment for both chemical and bacteriological analysis of water.
She said after the passage of Erika, PAHO assisting the island in many ways including “the deployment of a water engineer to work with DOWASCO and the Environmental Health Department, supplying water purification tablets and also establishing a rainwater harvesting system at the health facilities that would help to ensure that the services are not disrupted anytime we have some type of disasters.”
She stated also that PAHO hopes that the equipment will be put to good use.
The cost of the equipment was not disclosed.
