PM calls for greater responsibility in terms of security

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt has made a call to the society at large to take command of their obligations, specifically as it relates to their security and that of the greater community.

Skerrit

The call comes after a number of incidents which required response from the Police during the Independence celebrations. One such incident included a stabbing on November 4 during the ‘Street Jam’.

“People in the society must take on their responsibilities. People cannot leave everything to the Government. The Government cannot regulate every behavior of an individual. Are we going to say to stop the Carnival next year, because a few people want to fight in the streets?. Are we going to say to stop all public activities because people keep fighting at these activities? Are we going to stop all fetes? What is the root of the problem? Too many people have abdicated their responsibility,” Skerrit stated.

He added, “Parents need to spend more time with their children and to take greater responsibility for the children’s future and well being. The society must take greater responsibility for its behavior. When we have a constant diatribe of attacks and lack of tolerance among ourselves as people, what do we expect?”

Additionally he conveyed the need for all factions of society to grab hold of their responsibility towards the preservation of peace in the country.

Skerrit said, “We cannot leave the security of the state only to the Government. What is the responsibility of the media, church, schools and the business community? We all have a role to play in the maintenance of law and order and peace and tranquility in our country,” he argued.

The Prime Minister does not believe that the activity was the cause of the stabbing incident but rather it is a culture of misbehavior that has been allowed to fester among a few deviants of Dominican society.

“We need to hold those people who have committed those crimes. By blaming the ‘jump-up’ we are saying that these people who have cause themselves to be in trouble are not responsible,” he concluded.

Stop hating, and support something when it is good. Do you all love our youth? Do want the best for the youth. The PM have not said anything wrong. Parents have to take responsibility, church leaders have to take responsibility, neighbours have to take responsibility. It takes a village to raise a child.Well done PM.

Since when is security of the state not responsibility of the Govt.? Man, mister not easy. He is saying one thing and doing another. Isn’t it the same Govt. that’s taking care 24/7 of his personal security or not? So we lesser mortals have to look after ourselves then?

I would think that after these many years in a position of leadership one would be better able to address the crime problem. Are we all to take up arms to personally defend ourselves, should we form vigilante groups. Yes, as individuals we have a responsibility to conduct outselves in concert with social norms and the law, but when that fails what should the society do. That is the question at hand. Clearly the the Prime Minister has not addressed this issue in his statement.
This statement of the Prime Minister is another indication of the mediocrity of his governance thus far. Is this all that he can say about a worsening crime problem in Dominica.Platitudes and generalities are not going to work. We need mature leadership.

It is so sad that our people have become so shallow. Where is the patriotic pride? I know we are not dumb people! So why are some of our expressions so dumb! The Prime Minister is simply asking that we help each other to be responsible in our behavior, that we protect each other and do not behave like we are in the jungle!!! Is that too much to ask? Come on people!

The PM is not at fault but someone needs to bring forth to Parliament to start to amend our laws. Year after year we show by example that we need to have facilities for juvenile offenders. The criminals start somewhere. One doesn’t grow up and decide that today he wants a life of crime. We need to address all our minor problems that lead to the big ones.

All I can say is “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown,”according the Shakespear. It is not easy to run DA. And Mr. Skeritt should be lauded for his temrity to attempt to do a good job at it.

Man, … he volunteered for the job! He was eager, did not want anyone else to have it. To be lauded for temerity? You better look up the meaning of that word because Mr. Skerrit would not be amused.

I don’t blame anyone but I try my best to talk to the young persons about their violent and temper problems. Some of you instead of turning a blind eyes in your communities and then blaming someone, why not speak to some of the troubled youths. Who know you might make a difference in someones life. You will hear some of their problems too and can offer some advice instead of playing blame game!

At least you thank him for the good he has done. But why on earth would you want him to resign? Are you the only one who voted him in and how do you come to the conclusion that he has overstayed? You will have to wait for the next election or perhaps the decision of the Cour on the dual citizenship issue. Why are you all so hating and jealous of one of our bros? Remove that hatred from within and let us pray and continue to love another as God loves us.

when a leader has become dishonest and entangled in so many legal and financial mess it is a signal that he will destroy the POSTERITY of our people.

Glad that you recognise that we are thankful for the good that they have done as all government must; but We think that enough is enough and he must go.
      But you know what?

Give thanks that you are not part of a group of people whose consciences will haunt them until they spend time for the crimes they have done to the fabric of our society…..performing by deception and grand charge

      Say?!

Who ever is jealous of such personalities really has a problem with the Creator because he warns us not to drink from the cups of liars and deceivers.

Dont be surprised to know that all we have is sympathy for those in so much folly…..

Mr. Skerrit, the fish starts rotting from the head, “no law, no constitution,” “win, loose or draw.”

From top to bottom lawless in Dominica, how are we going to restore rule of law. By asking media reps to stop operating like there is freedom of press, or to separate judiciary from executive?

People are more easily persuaded to do crimes when they are of the view that they can get away with it….this is Psych 101.

Too many times it appears that politics and other factors that has nothing to do with the course of justice interferes with court system.

If this is how you intend to keep it and so you are encouraging citizens to get licenced fire arms to protect themselves, then say that. Otherwise persons will be looking for protection from the police and justice from the courts. Which is just the way it ought to be.

Well I guess parents bear all the responsibility for what goes on in society. So then there is no need for government or church or judiciary. Come on!! We all have a responsibility and it begins with setting the right example. Parents need to be good role models and so do prime ministers. We need to show respect for the law so that civilians can respect the law. We also need to provide rehabilitation and proper punishment when these crimes occur. We cannot cover up crimes and free people because of their rank in society. We cannot make video tape evidence disappear so as not to prosecute people. It still remains a village effort. These young people will continue to stab and kill, why? Because they go unpunished. When was the last time a young person got a good punishment for one of these crimes? Most of them go free to kill again.

Mr. Skerrit, stop giving your responsibilities to every one. We as parents can do so much. The rest is up to the government to provide proper facilities with counseling and rehabilitation, the church to condemn the wrong behaviours and set the right example to society that you do not condone a thing because your party is in power and the judiciary and police to prosecute a crime no matter who the perpetrator is or who is his family.

We will do our part but you have to do yours. The security of our nation is everybody’s responsibility. It is not all yours neither is it all mine.

Clean up your own backyard first by laying the blame on the PM. You should be first exammple to your children at your own homes and not blame someone else. Teaching people to demonstrate and not take up their responsibility but lay everything on the Government moreso the PM.

The Father is watching on those of us who Calls ourselves – Citizens for a much better Dominica but in truth we just want to ride on the back and minds of the masses so we will be in power and we do not mind to get there even if it by demonstration but God forbids. We will have to adhere to the wishes of the Creator and the general election.
