Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit participated in a one-day Caribbean Cooperation meeting at the Prefecture in Guadeloupe on Thursday, June 9, to talk about security with the French Caribbean.

The discussions were held with the French ambassador to the OECS, Eric de La Moussaye and the Prefect of Guadeloupe, Jacques-Billant.

Prime Minister Skerrit said, “We dealt with a number of subjects: the issue of security, the issue of illegal immigration, the issue of fisheries, areas of customs cooperation; we dealt with matters of mutual assistance, in legal mutual assistance, cooperation on fighting drug trafficking, among other matters of security concerns. We also discussed the issue of tropical storms and hurricanes. ”

Skerrit also thanked the people of Guadeloupe and the French Republic, whom he said were extremely helpful to Dominica, and to whom we will always be grateful for the assistance received after the passage of Tropical Storm Ericka in August 2015.

It was not just security that was the topic of this meeting. France-Antilles of 10 June reports that Roosevelt Skerrit was accompanied by Rayburn Blackmoore, Eveleyna Baptiste and Tamika Hyacinth-Burton (representing our A.G. Levi Peter). One of the subjects was “irregular” immigration and significantly the French authorities also met with the Consul of the Dominican Republic in Guadeloupe, Andrea Medina, on the same occasion. Do we have a problem in this area, perhaps with Dominica being used as a staging post for human trafficking, particularly to Guadeloupe?

Very unflattering pic of Skerrit. He’s not ageing gracefully.

Guadeloupe is very close to Marigot. Is it a coincidence that the people of the Marigot who are contemplating demonstrations against the Government because of the closure of the Marigot hospital, there is a meeting in Guadeloupe concerning security. The Skeritt led Administration has a Minister of Security who happens to be an ex policeman, Skeritt decided to attend himself. I hope Skeritt is not trying intimidate the people of Marigot. Don’t be surprised, by next week we will be seeing an influx of soldiers from Guadeloupe in Dominica to try to fool us that they are here to do jungle training. The Venezuelans cannot help Skeritt because they have their own problems.

The French government would never deploy soldiers to Dominica, not on Skerrits request anyway. You think the French don’t know what the Doctor is up to in Dominica?

waw… so if the Hospital is closing because the people that work there cant and don’t maintain it… its the Government fault?
If the Prime Minister has consultations with the neighboring Island on issues affecting the region and Dominica as a whole… it must because he want to send foreign troops to Mariogt which is on the Eastern not Northern side of the Island?
Where do you guys come up with this small minded foolishness?

Instead of spending time in Skeritt bottom why don’t you come up with ideas to fix or improve the Hospital and your community as a whole.

You’re thinking too much. The French, on their own, would never send armed forces to intervene in local conflict. The only time they would do so, is by UN mandate. The only other time is to assist in natural disaster relief and mitigation.

      • Me
        June 13, 2016

They do not need a U.N. mandate to intervene should their citizens, who reside here, find themselves in peril.

Typical again. Why does he say people of Guadeloupe and the French Republic when he jolly well knows that they all are the same French citizens, don’t they carry a French EU passport (…he should know!). He can’t leave it alone, can he, trying to drive a wedge wherever he goes.

Because Guadeloupe is the name of the Island and its a French Republic (Protectorate). He call it what it is.
If the sky is blue you going to say its purple because purple is your favorite colour?
Jealousy is a sad sad thing, does make people say and do foolishness!

You are a real dummy. Guadeloupe is a dept. of France, like a county in the United Kingdom
It is not a republic( It would have its own President if it was). Its citizens are French and carry a French E.U. passport (the same mr. Skerrit obtained), like French citizens on the mainland of France and use the Euro, like the rest of France. The laws of France apply in Guadeloupe and the French armed forces are responsible for their security. The official flag of Guadeloupe is the French tri-colour.
They vote in the general elections of France, like any other French citizen. I don’t know where you went to school but if it is Dominica, you either did not pay attention or the education system here is woefully inadequate. Please, do not embarrass other, more educated Dominicans with your ignorance.

all good but, what really happened to the coast guard base the USA gave funds for the Government of Dominica to build?

smh what a type of island dominica has become…but the blame lies fully with the citizens on island for allowing that poor governance structure..

      June 11, 2016

Oh yes it rest on the citizens on island but when election time comes around and we decide to do something about it people /folks from overseas maybe not you but maybe friends and or family of yours and others fly in to derail us and to frustrate the process. So those of you overseas engaging in that cannot escape the blame.

can someone tell me why building in dominica is so expensive..ok 1,040sq ft home per 250 a sq ft contractor labor, which is 260,000, pluc architectural fee which is 20,000.ok lets make a house 2000 sq ft architectural fees is 40,000.contracter fees is 520,000 in that small house plus if I have to buy land.
OMG only rich people lives in big houses in dominica

Most land in DA is inherited or owned and shared by the same families. Most houses are built with assistance of friends and family as well as professional contractors. Most homes in my Village are built by the men and women that live there.

Jeff, that applies to all countries as far as I know. The richer you are the bigger the house you can afford, and why not if it is your money and honestly earned? At least by spending it on a house of your choice you stimulate the construction industry, furniture industry, house furnishings industry, gardening industry and so on. Hopefully you will also enhance your neighbourhood and inspire others by building something of beauty to be admired. apart from deriving joy from it yourself. You can also spend your money on the horses or in the casino if your prefer but building a beautiful home is more desirable in my estimation. My advice is always build or buy the house you can afford, maintain it well and enjoy it. There is always someone with a bigger house, better car etc. so to try and emulate them, let alone beat them is an endless task that leaves you miserable and bitter. Good luck!

Remember, everything has to be imported, not least the cement, the price of which is regulated by govt. We have high import duties and transport costs. And although labour is relatively cheap, it takes much longer to complete a project than, say in the U.S.A. Frequent halts because of lack of material or weather are also not uncommon.
