Eleven non-profit organisations will have some early Christmas cheer as they received thousands of dollars in donations from the proceeds of the President’s Charities Dinner (PCD) held in July.

This morning, organisers of the PCD presented the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities, St. Jerome’s Ministry, House of Hope and the Mahaut Senior Citizens Home, among other organisations, with these cash contributions which will go towards supporting their efforts in helping the underprivileged.

A total of $19,000 was presented, bringing the PCF total donations for 2010 to $38,000.

The PCD previously gave $5,000 to the Dominica Red Cross towards Haiti relief efforts after the devastating earthquake in January.

Representatives from each organisation gratefully accepted the donations promising that funds will be used effectively.

Out of the many who received were the Mahaut Gospel Tabernacle – $2,000 – which will go towards purchasing a refrigerator. The St. Jerome’s Ministry will use its $2,000 contribution to organise a Christmas function for the elderly later this year.

The Mahaut Senior Citizens home, which has been going through a major reconstruction project, will inject their proceeds into that project.

Other recipients  were Dominica Council on Aging, REACH, St Vincent De Paul Society, Roving Care Givers Programme the Social Center (St Ann’s Day Nursery) and Irma Lafond-Joseph for an elderly support initiative.

The PCD will organise a Christmas party for 250 underprivileged children on the eastern part of the island later this year. The organisation will be soliciting contributions in order to fulfill this venture.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Public Service Union under the patronage of the President His Excellency J.O Liverpool.

During the independece season there was an ad on radio read by SGB stating when it comes to Gin, Gordon’s is the best. Did anyone read between the lines? was that a co-incidence or uncontrolable? I keep wondering.
