The President of Dominica His Excellency Charles Savarin yesterday welcomed the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner Designate to Dominica, Her Excellency Victoria Glynis Dean.

His remarks, delivered at the Office of the President, ranged over issues including the benefit Dominica receives from the UK and the EU, the lack of visa requirements for Dominican visitors to the UK and the contribution that Dominicans in the UK make to that country.

Describing the UK as “one of Dominica’s main traditional partners”, the President said that Dominica continued to benefit through “fruitful bilateral cooperation in human resource development, infrastructural development, security and the fight against crime, and poverty alleviation.”

Assistance was also channeled through the EU, the Commonwealth, and the UK Caribbean Forum. Significant EU funded projects in Dominica, he said, included the Air Access Improvement programme, Dominica Social Investment Fund, Waitukubuli National Trail programme, Eco-Tourism Development programme and the West Coast Water Supply project.

He made special mention of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) that was signed between Europe and the Caribbean Forum countries in 2008, to explore avenues to improve access for Caribbean exports of goods and services.

“We also welcome the fact that Britain has agreed to assist the Caribbean improve on food security, and its commitment to provide £2.9 billion for the period 2011/2012 to 2014/2015 towards the International Climate Fund. I recognize the potential of these programmes as effective means of complementing our national growth effort, including our adaptation to climate change and the pursuit of renewable energy.”

He noted that Dominicans in the UK made contributions to that country in many ways, up to and including the UK Cabinet and the House of Lords. He welcomed the UK’s reconfirmation in 2011 that Dominicans visiting the UK as tourists did not require visas.

Finally, the President hoped that Mrs Dean and her family might visit Dominica again. “Please enjoy your stay among us,” he concluded, “and accept my very best wishes for a successful tour of duty.”
