Protest action in Salisbury

A section of the road
A section of the road

There is protest action now taking place in Salisbury.

DNO understands the main road linking Portsmouth to Roseau has been blocked in three places.

It appears the protest began when police arrived in the community on Thursday morning to arrest individuals, who were allegedly involved in similar protest action some time ago.

The action by the police is not going down well with residents.

MP for the area, Hector John, during a live interview on privately owned Q95, described the area as a “war zone.”

“The community has blocked the road,” he said, adding that five men were arrested and taken in the direction of Portsmouth.

He said shots, whether blank or live, were fired by the police.

He said the residents will not be intimidated.

“We have been victimized for too long and no level of intimidation or confrontation will scare us,” he noted. “We are there standing for our rights. The entire village is on the highway and we will not back down.”

On May 11, residents blocked the main Highway connecting Roseau and Portsmouth, raising concerns over the deplorable state of farm access roads in the area. The protest was eventually broken up by the police using tear gas.

That protest was deemed illegal by the government and there were warnings that “appropriate action” against those who either participated in or organized the protest, would be taken.

DNO is following this latest development and will publish information as it becomes available.

But please do so in a manner that don’t make your rights unlawful. It’s not a political problem. It’s an infrastructure problem. The government of Dominica is not shaming the country. The ppl are. Those by breaking the law you are forcing the hands of the law on yourself. Skerret didn’t make the law he met it there and have to abide by its power as leader of the country. You the ppl have to organize yourselfs get the necessary permission and have a proper demonstration about the problems affecting you. That’s the law.

My fellow Dominicans answer me one question, why is everything in Dominica political or religious. Lets look at a few things.
FACT: an unplanned protest in any global country is illegal. Yes even in our little island. You can’t just block a major road and think it’s ok. For those of us who have bee or living in another country should know that. If you think am wrong try it elsewhere.
FACT: Any such disruption would be met with the same result by the law or worst. You will be arrested and charged.
FACT: The farmers roads may be in poor condition, how is causing disruption and unnecessary cost going to help. There are so many ignorant ppl around and those that know better is fuelling the mess and standing on the wayside laughing.
My friends and family in Salisbury, I say this to you. Violence breeds violence. If you break the law, expect tobe treated as criminals. Do things right. And for those of you who say they have a right to express their anger,I say yes they bloody…

Was your farm access road not repaired? What now? What else do you want? Some of us know who is behind this. You people do not want peace. You are giving me a different perspective about Salisbury people.
You offend God by your actions. You better not pray to God or go to Church for your efforts are in vain.
You are not a peaceful people. You are troublemakers, disobedient and rebellious. Either that or you are ignorant, following a leader who is pursuing his own means and ends and your minister who are always out for trouble. God has taken note. You will pay for this and soon enough when you least expect it.

Hebrews 12:14 – Penalties of Disobedience – Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

The Salisbury protest was over a month ago. The police suddenly appeared at 5:30am today to arrest 5 or 6 men for protesting about their farm access road conditions OVER a month ago.
The rest of the Salisbury villagers were outraged that arrests are being made for exercising their constitutional rights OVER a month later, and as a result they took to the streets in support of their fellow villagers.
Please read carefully the above news article carefully before you make a baseless comment such as this.

and think of who is hurting in all of that melee? Someone name DOMINICA
it belongs to all of us.While the people of Salisbury has a right to demonstrate
peacefully. It is not fair to hold the people of other the villages hostage .I agree to demonstrate

Unite about what, to create trouble and lack of peace? Not everyone thinks like you. Some are peacemakers and want to live in peace; others are not. This is what I see in this protest and those who protest. They lack peace. They do not do this on their own. They have the backing of Linton and their minister. Their day is coming.

but who tell allu not to stand up for allu right…d same rights you have I have it to so you cannot want to protest for your right by infringing on mine…we all have right to pass on government roads freely so you cannot block my right while you protesting for yours…if you want to blame somebody for what happen to your grandmother blame your fellow villagers because they were the ones who instigated that response by the police today…the law was broken by the illegal blocking of the road and stone and bottle throwing therefore if you break the law you have to be held accountable…you talking about your grandmother what if a stone or a bottle had get me in me in my head then my child would be making similar statements as yours..allu don’t know nothing about rights allu just blinded by a colour…

Well stated. I am all for peace and happiness. As a D/can I was brought up in this manner.
There really is no reason for this protest. They also infringed upon the rights of other Dominicans by preventing them from going about their daily business.
They are lawless people who prohibit the police from performing their job. They should all be arrested and thrown into prison. It looks as though they are idle people who should get some work to do. If they were busy they would not have time for that.

I keep reading all these comments on DNO and on social media that the people of Salisbury were exercising “their rights”. What rights? Where did they get that right to block the main roads, prevent even pedestrians from crossing, and to stone the police when they attempted to unblock the roads? I ask that in the process of cursing me and calling me names that the”loyalist” .. opps, sorry, “patriots” tell me where to find these endowed rights.

The police came to enforce the arrest warrant for five individuals today. Some residents took it to a whole other level. #Don’tBlamethePolice

My good friend , the people’s problem at the first protest was not with the police until the police failed to maintain restrain . MP for the area, Hector John, during a live interview on privately owned Q95, described the area as a “war zone.”—News Article

Whoever is behind that kind of unrest in Dominica–it is not God. I do not understand how a member of Parliament goes behind a Radio Microphone–to declare “its a war zone” is that what he wants for Dominica?

None of this made no sense from the very beginning! The people of Salisbury are not hurting anyone but their own families–for it is they themselves who needs to go in and out to do their routines for the day.

Obviously Hector John would suffer no pain in what he calls the “war zone”; for he is well protected behind a microphone at a Radio station–somewhere in Roseau.

The fact is, while those who are influencing that uproar are hiding behind closed doors, you all are making things harder for yourselves–as you follow their orders– some of you may not even know why you are there, that too is stupidity!

ADMIN: John was live on the scene of the protest when he did the interview.

Elizabeth ignorance, and stupidity concealed to one self serves a better purpose than for a person to expose their stupidity for the world to see!

The people of Salisbury are treated by Skerrit government as if they are not part of our Republic. The commonwealth Republic of Dominica belongs to all of us who are born there, and those who became Dominicans by citizenship, and not through the passport racket!

Skerrit treats the people of Wesley, Woodford Hill, and Marigot as if we are in a foreign country, and seek to muzzle the voices of the people from those three villages because we reject him at the poles. The issue in Salisbury is about the poor conditions of roads, and neglect of the village infrastructure.

I do not revere men on earth, especially those who are week, and incompetent. My concern is about growth and prosperity. Any Political Party which can develop Dominica to a point where everybody who wish to become employed can find a job: that is my party!

Why should I support Skerrit, when Skerrit allowed Ralph Gonzalez to tell him do not build an International Airport in Dominica, because we would be better off refurbishing Melville Airport, and install landing lights that will serve our purpose; while he Ralph, was building an International Airport now in operation in St. Vincent.

I do not wish to appear as an agitator of civil disobedience; nevertheless, there comes a time when the people of the country must rebel; that was recognized by a former, and late President of the United States, he encouraged such actions. In a democracy the citizens have rights, and when their rights are violated by any government they are duty bound to fight, using every means necessary to get the tyrant government out of office! Blackmoore, the tyrant dictator Skerrit, and his pathetic so called AG, are arresting the victims of the government.

Weeks ago a lawyer advised the people of Salisbury what to do regarding the expired tear gas the police used on them. To this day we have yet to learn of a single law suite in that regard. Our Country has the most ignorant set of people I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Dominica is a democratic country and for that people should be able to express their concerns. Why should these people be provoked a whole month after an incident. So basically the leader of this country is saying no one should disagree with his work. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. They don’t feel their needs are being met by the government and have the right to stand up for it. It goes by saying, if anywhere else in dominica had road issues and they were unable to go to work to earn a living, they might be upset also. But the issue with most of the people home is that, they will remain silent because they need a favor from the government. I support the pal. rep, and his work. Maybe if more people would stand up the country would be better. Keep on going this way, the money earned by the leader will never be shared with all of you who claim his officers are doing right.

First of all this report is not truthful since it does not say the damaging actions taken by individuals the first time around nor give any real insight. Second I am to believe that every village without a good access road has the right to this kind of hostile behavior. Let’s be clear Salisbury is NOT the only village. There is much development in the country but it appears we are very delusional. The roads all around are far more awesome than they have ever been. The Grandbay road is amazing!! What are we really talking about? Every time we don’t yet have we want we should behave this lawless way. Unbelievable the supporters of this here. The Dominica rainfall far exceeds anywhere else in the greater Caribbean and we will be constantly be shelling out money on roads. Does EVERYTHING truly have to be political? Is this the ONLY WAY Salisbury can do things? Fair enough if one wants to stick to one’s convictions but this is NOT the way and it will not be tolerated.

Totally condemns actions of the police . This situation could have been handled in a more amicable way , by summons being issued to persons who they felt were part of the protest rather than the war-like manner . I feel for the people of Salisbury and feel that we as a nation in time have an obligation to call in to assist our friends , cousins , brothers and sisters , nieces and nephews , grand parents alike . This is a political war against the people of Salisbury as was announced by Mr Blackmore in parliament . Don’t blame no one for the out come , but the ones who is to blame .

The only ones who are correct are the ones who strive for peace and who do not create a disturbance and disrupting other nationals in their everyday business. They know how to address and handle a situation with dignity and class without creating a melee and protesting.

Ok. There is a warzone in Salisbury (Dominca) and the nation station is not reporting on it. It is as if nothing is going on in Dominica- is this place becoming a dictatoriship. Then Kimora talks of “empty pursuits” and to do something that matters. Maybe the people are engaging in something that matters by standing up for thier fellow citizens! I am hearing that there was some problem a month ago and an entire month later people are being arrested. What took so long and where is Mr Weeks (the policeman) to update us on what is happening???. At least Q 95 was giving us a little info – now they have shut them down – when people do not have access to communication of thier choice, that is a sign of dictatorship. What is happening in Dominca????

How will the UWP govern if it gets in to office using violence and intimidation? The leader has already surrounded himself body guards, is that a sign of things come. One would be foolish to believe that with a UWP administration all oppossition and civil disobedience would cease and that everything would be Utopian. How will a UWP administration deal with civil unrest, because there will always be issue. The bullishness of the UWP would indicate that itwould not stand for anything that would appear, to challenge its authority and it would be safe to assume that a level of oppossition suppression would be part of their rule.

Its working together that creates a team structure. BOTH PARTIES ARE WRONG. June 11, 2015

Mr. Skerrit, I am calling on you to intervene in this situation before it is too late. If you allow this to continue and it turns fatal, the blood of the country will be on your hands. What is so difficult about having a dialogue with the people? You promised it and never delivered. Instead you send the SSU to arrest citizens thus adding more fuel to the fire. Good leadership would have met with the people and not allow the situation to escalate to where it is today. We do not want a repeat of 1979. You are in the best position to prevent this. Stop using the police to deal with a situation that calls for dialogue. You are putting the police in an uncomfortable situation since they have to obey your government’s orders. Show that you are a leader by calling off this assault and go meet with the people. You have the authority to diffuse the situation. This is what true leadership is all about.

Looking from the outside I feel a lot of anger and tension in your tones. Let’s all calm down and think critically. Agriculture was murdered! Marigot, La Plaine, Wesley, Salisbury, Woodfordhill, Calibishie, Coulibistrie and many other farming villages have suffered over a decade of misery. Already farming has no support and to add salt to the wound, the roads are totally dilapidated. Their homes to support, loans to service, vehicles to license, fuel to purchase and now because of the bad roads parts to buy! You are unreasonable Dominicans. The only reason you talk like this is because you are not in their shoes. While i do not support violence, how much can one person bottle up?
What went wrong on the day of the first protest is that no one showed up to represent the government on time. Hence it escalated! Who is to be blamed? To show that the people have no voice, a convoy comes to arrest already angry people! You get the point? What would make it worst is to bring outside forces.
