Roadblock in Antrizle

Residents of Antrizle mounted a roadblock in the area this morning in protest of poor road conditions. Reports are that the roadblocks went up as early as 5:00 a.m.

The action brought traffic to a grinding halt on the only roadway linking much of the northeastern part of the island to Roseau.

Reports reaching Dominica News Online are that there is a long line of traffic in the area.

Anton Laville, Chairman of the Atkinson Village Council confirmed that poor conditions of the road led to the protest action. He said police and other officials are now on their way to clear it.

DNO has learnt that residents of Antrizle, Atkinson and the Carib Territory have been complaining of the deplorable conditions of the road for some time now.

The Concord/Belles road, which links much of the northeastern part of Dominica to Roseau, has been closed for renovation and the only route to the capital city is through Antrizle and the Carib Territory.

Way PaPa DNO ou sa fe moon pale enitil eh!!! ‘creative’ just using words. If creative get in power today, she/he will only look after his or her immediatefamily first and not the roads or DA people. They all do the same thing..blah blah blah on the side with no input.

Very frustrating. This action is a veritable inconvenience but I do sympathise. Here we are, we are advised to go to Melville Hall airport using a long detour via Castle Bruce and the Carib territory because works are ongoing on the Point Case to Marigot Road. We have to accept that this takes longer and makes the trip more expensive. The least the Govt. could have done is to make sure that this alternative route is passable and in a good condition before redirecting the traffic. Not all of us go from Portsmouth or Veille Case to Melville Hall. As it is this road is a real torture and we should ask ourselves what impression this gives to visitors to our shores, never mind us long-suffering locals!

who the hell is that that keep trying to make caribs look like they dont pay taxes. every living body in the country pay taxes. the caribs deserve more. they deserve better roads. bad road should never be a tradition in a country. state house going up and our roads so terrible. everytime i have to go up to the country i get discouraged because of all the pot holes in the road. skerrit dont give people more to fix their vehicle and to buy tires. great job to the people of antrizle. tell them enough is enough. we cant even enjoy the ride when we taking a sunday drive.. to all those that hate caribs, keep hating we will demand for what we want..

I found the Kalinago Territory to have some of the worst roads in Dominica in terms of their maintenance. Now our govt. does not want to listen to the cries of its ppl but that should not be a reason for the ppl to take the law into their own hands. Blocking the road is an illegal act and robs the country of well needed dollars. The ppl responsible for holding up traffic should be jailed. It is true you want your voice to be heard but i believe that this is not the way. What if there was an emergency, someone could have lost thier lives as a result of this road block.
Think before we act, thats all i am saying.

      July 25, 2011

u want to be like the gov’t and the ministry of public works and pretend like you pass through the Kalinago Territory everyday? You quite sure what will be repaired?????When?????By Whom???? Every right thinking technican and engineer in that ministry even the CTO knows that when u have a major road project being undertaken you have to provide for traffic diversions….meaning fixing the alternative routes that u want vehicle drivers to use. That alternative route to the airport should have been taken into consideration by the CTO to provide limited diruption and inconveninence. This wording are in the terms of reference, the guiding principles of the project. Where are our values???? DO WE VALUE OUR KALINAGO PEOPLE??? DO WE VALUE RURAL COMMUNITIES? DO WE VALUE OUR FARMERS? DO WE VALUE OUR VERDANT BEAUTY?? dO WE VALUE OUR LIVES AS ONE PEOPLE???
Shame on the ministry of public works. The minister and project officers and supervisors are a disgrace!!!!! Where our chief engineer? I recently read about a beefed up road maintenence crew in the ministry to pick up after not giving PWC maintence contracts. SO WHAT HAPPEN OUR MINISTERS AND TECHNOCRATS THINK IS THEY ALONE THAT HAVE BRAIN?

DNO by general consensus it would be OK to disregard comments that are not worthy – for example the comments about carib paying taxes or caribs this or that. It is shameful to get on the site and read such stupidity. I am absolutely sure that the majority of us would accept DNO’s decision on this matter. I hate to say so but the people who write these comments don’t even understand their rights to free speech so whether or not DNO deny those rights these people wouldn’t even have a clue of what is going on- ignorance is a bliss effect? Once again DNO please consider omitting such shameful comments

Well as much as the disagree with the protesters in blocking the main road, I just am taken back a bit? Where do the officials pass when they travel. Maybe the shocks on their cars are changed regularly and they do not feel the holes. But what happen to a poor person that is trying to get by, we are broke and cannot afford the new shocks. So having some form of action taken, that should give them something to think about and start taking others into consideration. Keep the road block until you all see some action. Do again tomorrow and the following day and week if you all have too and let the voice of the people be heard.

ITS ABOUT TIME THE CARIBS STAND UP
THERE SHOULD BE A TOLL BRIDGE THERE TO HELP MAINTAIN THE ROAD.
THEY USES THE CARIBS ENOUGH IN THEIR SHIT
THAT TOLL AT THE AIRPORT SHOULD BE IN RESEEVED NOT AT THE AIRPORT.
DOMINICA IS THE ONLY ISLAND YOU PAY TO ENTER THE AIRPORT.I KNOW THAT YOU PAY FOR PARKING IN THE PARKING LOTS AT THE AIRPORT LOT.

Yes I agreee, the roads are in a TERRIBLE MESS!!!!!! It is a shame. The potholes are getting bigger everyday, and the grass covering the sides of the road is a hazrd to pedestrians and vehicles as well. I fear for the lives of the Kalinago children who are always walking the streets. I know that there is a certain group of men on a truck up there trying to patch here and patch there, and that is pure rubbish in itself, because today they patch tomorrow it is dug up again. Enough is enough. I am not one to encourage blocking of the road becaue that hinders progress and so on, BUT I do hear the cry of the Kalinago people. FIX the roads once and for all. The Concord route is a Gardakhan DISASTER, so we should have a safe alternative in Kalinago route.

In some way I agree with the people of Antrizle but on the other hand I do not think it is right to hold up that part of the country by blocking the road. After all for the time being that is the only accesible road and I am sure that when the Concorde and Belles road is somewhat complete, work will certainly be done on that road. Please be patient my people, I know how you all may be feeling.

I drove the the belles road recently and the undertaking in huge. If they patch the holes all you saying the wasting money. They making massive reconstruction of two main highway and is still a waste of money. When will understand that things happen in stages.

There is little money to go around. check the U.S.A. they might default on their payments in days if Obama cant get the budget to pass.

This is a lame excuse not to have your road in a motorable condition for all drivers. The road has been in this state and worsening long before the diversion. If roadblock is the only way to get some repairs done, so be it. Its unfortunate that motorists have to suffer the inconvenience. The next road block should be between Paix Bouche/Petite Savanne and Boetica……shame, shame, shame…

      • creative
        July 25, 2011

Patience what!!! The road just didn’t get like that, it got worse and worse, till the people could not take it no more, so all that time they were patient. We need to set our priorities, and do things in a timely manner so the situation don’t get so bad. Too many roads in DA in deplorable conditions, and that affects everyone, the local man, the tourist, the school children, the businessman, the bus driver, everybody. We need to see what is more important in the lives of Dominicans, before we decide on million $ projects that will have very little effect on day to day life of the population. It is the duty of any government to improve the environment, and that means better roads, bridges, housing, drainage, clean up, proper waste disposal, and so much more. We need to use tax payers money wisely to the benefit of the entire nation.
