Residents of Antrizle mounted a roadblock in the area this morning in protest of poor road conditions. Reports are that the roadblocks went up as early as 5:00 a.m.
The action brought traffic to a grinding halt on the only roadway linking much of the northeastern part of the island to Roseau.
Reports reaching Dominica News Online are that there is a long line of traffic in the area.
Anton Laville, Chairman of the Atkinson Village Council confirmed that poor conditions of the road led to the protest action. He said police and other officials are now on their way to clear it.
DNO has learnt that residents of Antrizle, Atkinson and the Carib Territory have been complaining of the deplorable conditions of the road for some time now.
The Concord/Belles road, which links much of the northeastern part of Dominica to Roseau, has been closed for renovation and the only route to the capital city is through Antrizle and the Carib Territory.
Way PaPa DNO ou sa fe moon pale enitil eh!!! ‘creative’ just using words. If creative get in power today, she/he will only look after his or her immediatefamily first and not the roads or DA people. They all do the same thing..blah blah blah on the side with no input.
To all my People out there, North, South, East and West of Dominica ‘Rome was not built in a Day’. Have patience.
if we don’t pay our vehicle license we get ticket,so fix the dam road, its long overdue.
Tell Peter pepper Delices next
Very frustrating. This action is a veritable inconvenience but I do sympathise. Here we are, we are advised to go to Melville Hall airport using a long detour via Castle Bruce and the Carib territory because works are ongoing on the Point Case to Marigot Road. We have to accept that this takes longer and makes the trip more expensive. The least the Govt. could have done is to make sure that this alternative route is passable and in a good condition before redirecting the traffic. Not all of us go from Portsmouth or Veille Case to Melville Hall. As it is this road is a real torture and we should ask ourselves what impression this gives to visitors to our shores, never mind us long-suffering locals!
who the hell is that that keep trying to make caribs look like they dont pay taxes. every living body in the country pay taxes. the caribs deserve more. they deserve better roads. bad road should never be a tradition in a country. state house going up and our roads so terrible. everytime i have to go up to the country i get discouraged because of all the pot holes in the road. skerrit dont give people more to fix their vehicle and to buy tires. great job to the people of antrizle. tell them enough is enough. we cant even enjoy the ride when we taking a sunday drive.. to all those that hate caribs, keep hating we will demand for what we want..
I need a serious tour of my country..WHERE IS ANTRIZLE? I am lost.. but from reading other people comments it seems like a horrible road..lets hope this problem gets solved.
I THINK ITS AT THE JUNCTION OF CONCORD AND RESERVE AREA ON THE WAY TO MARIGOT.
Blocking this important section of road traffic is the only way to draw attention.kalinago you right.doh give up
Please leave the Caribs, sorry Kalinago alone. They are special people and should be preserved…
TELL THAT TO THE CHINESE THEY IMPORTING BY THE CARTOON EVERYDAY
antrizle not in carib reserve dumbass
I found the Kalinago Territory to have some of the worst roads in Dominica in terms of their maintenance. Now our govt. does not want to listen to the cries of its ppl but that should not be a reason for the ppl to take the law into their own hands. Blocking the road is an illegal act and robs the country of well needed dollars. The ppl responsible for holding up traffic should be jailed. It is true you want your voice to be heard but i believe that this is not the way. What if there was an emergency, someone could have lost thier lives as a result of this road block.
Think before we act, thats all i am saying.
HuSh ur asssssss
Don’t you think it far more likely they could lose their lives because of the dilapidated state of the road?
it’s quite shameful, driving around Dominica SUCKS!!
too many pot holes…
Yeah, no matter how you try you cannot avoid them, there are just too many. Damage to vehicles, scared and sick passengers, including tourists and visitors.
Its really not that shameful…i LOVE driving around Dominica compared to where I am right now..they call it US TERRITORY but if you see the conditions of the road you would bawl.
Well I like driving around Dominica too, and there are bad roads everywhere, but we in Dominica have to strife for better, we cannot sit back and say other countries roads are bad too. Everywhere have to manage their own business and strife for the best.
what is your point? take up your issue with the US govt nuh…
but wait????? you don’t have a voice up there….. you must be just another “unnoticed” immigrant.
Is Chris-thief-er Columbus that make our roads like that for us so leave them alone. Enjoy the bumpy ride, it’s good for high blood pressure and for dizziness too.
Dubique to Petite Savanne next.
“Oh your prophetic soul!” One week after you posted comment there is a Landslide in Dubique.
i am quite sure that this road will be repaired once the ongoing road projects are completed. Its good that you inform the gov. of the conditions however all cannot be done at once. Lets be patient.
u want to be like the gov’t and the ministry of public works and pretend like you pass through the Kalinago Territory everyday? You quite sure what will be repaired?????When?????By Whom???? Every right thinking technican and engineer in that ministry even the CTO knows that when u have a major road project being undertaken you have to provide for traffic diversions….meaning fixing the alternative routes that u want vehicle drivers to use. That alternative route to the airport should have been taken into consideration by the CTO to provide limited diruption and inconveninence. This wording are in the terms of reference, the guiding principles of the project. Where are our values???? DO WE VALUE OUR KALINAGO PEOPLE??? DO WE VALUE RURAL COMMUNITIES? DO WE VALUE OUR FARMERS? DO WE VALUE OUR VERDANT BEAUTY?? dO WE VALUE OUR LIVES AS ONE PEOPLE???
Shame on the ministry of public works. The minister and project officers and supervisors are a disgrace!!!!! Where our chief engineer? I recently read about a beefed up road maintenence crew in the ministry to pick up after not giving PWC maintence contracts. SO WHAT HAPPEN OUR MINISTERS AND TECHNOCRATS THINK IS THEY ALONE THAT HAVE BRAIN?
I AM PROUD OF MY KALINAGO PEOPLE!!!!
That’s the next level
No palace. Fix the roads.
DNO by general consensus it would be OK to disregard comments that are not worthy – for example the comments about carib paying taxes or caribs this or that. It is shameful to get on the site and read such stupidity. I am absolutely sure that the majority of us would accept DNO’s decision on this matter. I hate to say so but the people who write these comments don’t even understand their rights to free speech so whether or not DNO deny those rights these people wouldn’t even have a clue of what is going on- ignorance is a bliss effect? Once again DNO please consider omitting such shameful comments
I second the motion, in fact we should cull dominica of all illiterate, ignorant and uneducated rubbish talking people.
TAKE SOME OF OUR LOAN MONEY THEY USING TO HOUSE CHINESE WOKRERS TO FIX THE ROAD.
YES THAT SAME MONEY OUR BLACK CHILDREN HAVE TO PAY BACK TO CHINA.
OR PERHAPS THEY COULD TAKE SOME OF THE STATE (SADDAM) PALACE TO DO THE JOB
Kalinago people keep telling all you to stay out, but all you not listening. They don’t want all the tourist to come to the Reserve so they blocking the road well before the Reserve. Bad road all over DA is part of the culture..it is part of what makes it DA..leave the pot holes and blocked drains and grass and everything else alone….. We like it so..
antrizle is not part of the kalinago area
BLOCKING ROAD? I THINK THOSE DUMMIES WHO DID THAT SHOULD BE JAILED……. DAM NUISSANCE
Those so-called dummies provided protection and cOmfort for Balla and Congore so u could be alive today…..DAMN SHAME ON U
block the road self, i fed up with that old road, government stop clean up side roads and drains, those lil things they have to do , they not studying that, atleast thats the main road now seeing the pond casse to concord road block, government should have thought about fixing the road, too much holes. they doesnt wanna do nothing, when election coming they visiting every where, and trying to do favours to get votes.
dem ppl doe see the roads them fixing wait allu turn nah all de time allu was using it stupes boy doe make it look like all dominicans have bird brains he right
Hush ur ass to big bird
No money…. when the CARIB start paying taxes then they will get the roads fixed.
ADMIN: Did you read the story? The roadblock is NOT in the Carib Terrritory. Antrizle is not part of the Carib Territory!!
taxes are being paid, and government dont pay to clean the side roads and drains anymore, if they are paying for it, its not being done.without proper drainage, holes will form when it rains.
Admin, we know Antrizle is not Officially part of the Carib Territory, but we also know who have lived there and owns it from wayyyyy back when…It is run by the Kalinago people. Once you pass the bridge at Hatton Garden going east, you in Kalinago country……map can say what it wants, but I know better.
get ur facts right, Antrizle is not part of the territory ok, kalinago territory starts @ Bataca. if Antrizle/ Atkinson was part of the territory they would vote for carib chief n carib council. atkinson/antrizle have their own village council.
and why do you think that the kalinago people do not pay taxes?
can you identify the different types of taxes in dominica for me please?
What the french do you mean by that? Are kalinago people immune from paying taxes? Those of us who are employed most definitely pay taxes and when we purchase items no one waives the tax for us!! Under which rock did you crawl out? We voted for development which includes proper roads and we will demonstrate for it!!
Don’t motorists pay a road tax? Is this not a public road? This is not a Carib/Kalinago issue but a national/Dominican one. It affects all of us.
yesssssssss i , enough talk action.
Well as much as the disagree with the protesters in blocking the main road, I just am taken back a bit? Where do the officials pass when they travel. Maybe the shocks on their cars are changed regularly and they do not feel the holes. But what happen to a poor person that is trying to get by, we are broke and cannot afford the new shocks. So having some form of action taken, that should give them something to think about and start taking others into consideration. Keep the road block until you all see some action. Do again tomorrow and the following day and week if you all have too and let the voice of the people be heard.
maybe them man ride so high tech it doesnt even touch the floor, hahaha.
i want to know if the caribs will pay for people hotel when they miss their flight and all their other expenses as a result.
tell the government fix the roads, so therefore there will be no road blocks
to hell with it let skerrit pay for that , they do damn right more to come they must block the airport next enough is enough
ITS ABOUT TIME THE CARIBS STAND UP
THERE SHOULD BE A TOLL BRIDGE THERE TO HELP MAINTAIN THE ROAD.
THEY USES THE CARIBS ENOUGH IN THEIR SHIT
THAT TOLL AT THE AIRPORT SHOULD BE IN RESEEVED NOT AT THE AIRPORT.
DOMINICA IS THE ONLY ISLAND YOU PAY TO ENTER THE AIRPORT.I KNOW THAT YOU PAY FOR PARKING IN THE PARKING LOTS AT THE AIRPORT LOT.
THATS A BRILLIANT IDEA. THE CARIBS SHOULD HAVE A TOLL SYSTEM TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THEIR PEOPLE, BUT THEN AGAIN, WE NO LONGER HAVE KALINAGOS, WE HAVE KALINIGROS INSTEAD
This action was long overdue. This road is d worst road in Dominica and it is the main road to the Airport. Shame on the Government.
LET ME HEAR WHAT WILL BE THE EXCUSE THIS TIME. If you are going to close down one major road for repairs, you need to ensure that the alternative route is prepared and kept in good condition. Does anyone care about how much it costs to maintain a vehicle in Dominica? I guess not!
WE DOH PLAY…AIGHT THEN …THINGS NEED TO BE DONE …LET DLP CONTINUE TO FOOL YOU …
Yes I agreee, the roads are in a TERRIBLE MESS!!!!!! It is a shame. The potholes are getting bigger everyday, and the grass covering the sides of the road is a hazrd to pedestrians and vehicles as well. I fear for the lives of the Kalinago children who are always walking the streets. I know that there is a certain group of men on a truck up there trying to patch here and patch there, and that is pure rubbish in itself, because today they patch tomorrow it is dug up again. Enough is enough. I am not one to encourage blocking of the road becaue that hinders progress and so on, BUT I do hear the cry of the Kalinago people. FIX the roads once and for all. The Concord route is a Gardakhan DISASTER, so we should have a safe alternative in Kalinago route.
kwaib le’vay movay!
ADMIN: the roadblock is in Antrizle and not the Carib Territory.
In some way I agree with the people of Antrizle but on the other hand I do not think it is right to hold up that part of the country by blocking the road. After all for the time being that is the only accesible road and I am sure that when the Concorde and Belles road is somewhat complete, work will certainly be done on that road. Please be patient my people, I know how you all may be feeling.
patience my foot!!! government not tired of wasting taxpayers money then!!! aa
if you had a vehicle you would know what it feels like!!! next protest should be to block the west coast road too!!!
How smart are you. Where the hell is the government getting the money from to repair all the deplorable roads that are on the island. I drove the the belles road recently and the undertaking in huge. If they patch the holes all you saying the wasting money. They making massive reconstruction of two main highway and is still a waste of money. When will understand that things happen in stages.
There is little money to go around. check the U.S.A. they might default on their payments in days if Obama cant get the budget to pass.
This is a lame excuse not to have your road in a motorable condition for all drivers. The road has been in this state and worsening long before the diversion. If roadblock is the only way to get some repairs done, so be it. Its unfortunate that motorists have to suffer the inconvenience. The next road block should be between Paix Bouche/Petite Savanne and Boetica……shame, shame, shame…
Patience what!!! The road just didn’t get like that, it got worse and worse, till the people could not take it no more, so all that time they were patient. We need to set our priorities, and do things in a timely manner so the situation don’t get so bad. Too many roads in DA in deplorable conditions, and that affects everyone, the local man, the tourist, the school children, the businessman, the bus driver, everybody. We need to see what is more important in the lives of Dominicans, before we decide on million $ projects that will have very little effect on day to day life of the population. It is the duty of any government to improve the environment, and that means better roads, bridges, housing, drainage, clean up, proper waste disposal, and so much more. We need to use tax payers money wisely to the benefit of the entire nation.
YA .. BUT U KNOW HOW IT IS IN DOMINICA .. UNLESS SOMETHING HAPPEN OR SOMEBODY TALK NOTHING BEING DONE .. LOOK AT POINTE MICHEAL ROAD .. IF DE ROAD DIDNT FALL IN T HE SEA GOVERNMENT WOULD NEVER HURRY UP DE PROJECT ..
that is why as the people in charge of the government, yes we are in charge – THEY WORK FOR US – we must ensure that they do their work!!
i agree too much talk gets nothing done around here – action speaks louder than words.
hooray to the kalinago people!!!!!!
Well ‘Fed Up’,I hear you asking where government getting the money. I hear they have $27 million to waste. There is the money!!!
