Salisbury community enthusiastic about kite flying

Green Shillingford and Dane Smalling walked away with the prize for Highest Kite and Most Impressive Kite respectively from a Kite Festival held in Salisbury on May 1.

The event, planned and hosted by the Salisbury Enhancement Committee (SEC) Inc,  is one of several community activities the committee has organized thus far this year.

Over 50 children and adults competed for the two coveted prizes being offered. The sky was covered with kites of every size, colour and design imaginable; it was a testament of the enthusiasm of the villagers and visitors alike.

Vice Chairman of SEC Kervin Vidal explained that he was impressed with the turn out, and admitted that it was further indication that the young people from the community are interested in extra-curricular activities if given the opportunity to participate. He further highlighted the fact that the lack of suitable sporting facilities in the community is one of great concern.

Salisbury which is a well known village for its contribution to cricket and basketball lacks a proper basketball court and playing field. Both are in a deplorable state. While the committee continues to pledge their support to the development of sports in the community, they cite these problems as significant hurdles to their efforts.

SEC also applauded the initiatives of a Salisbury Sports Committee to re-establish sporting activities in the community. Since their formation, which is part of a national program by the Sports Division, there has been a spike in netball, volleyball and rounders activities in the village. It is the hope of  SEC to continue pushing for the rehabilitation of both facilities.

Thanks to SEC for your continued involvement in community building. This dynamic team needs to be commended especially in this time …….
Can someone provide me with a listing of the young individuals who are taking care of my village whilst most of us have left. They all need to be recognized and encouraged to continue.

This is awesome committment and brilliant effort on the part of the SEC to not only bond our community together but at the same time creating extra-curricular activities for the young people which will contribute significantly to their development, focus and dicipline bearing in mind that in today’s society there are so many negative influences through which young people are so easily swayed. I am hearing of a 2011 Bawi Reunion and I am trying to be there for that. In the mean while keep up the good work and don’t be discouraged by criticism. Remain focused on your goals.
