Scotiabank has made a donation of EC$50,000 to the Dominica Red Cross as part of relief effort following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

Country Manager of Scotiabank, Paula Harts, said it’s the company’s social cooperative responsibility to give back to the community in time of need.

“We are quite aware of the impact that tropical storm Erika had on the people of Dominica and as such we feel it is our social cooperative responsibility to give back …” she said at a presentation ceremony earlier this week. “So today we are proud to present to you Mr. (Phillip) White on behalf of Scotiabank, a cheque for EC$50,000 to help assist you with defraying some of the costs that you will inquire for the people of Dominica.”

According to Harts, the staff at Scotiabank are praying for the persons who have been affected in one way or the other following the storm.

“We are praying that those persons who have been affected, especially those who lost love ones and those who are missing, that they will find strength in this hour through Christ, and we pray that you will find the strength and the courage to reach those that we need to reach and you will use it to the your best of your ability and make sure that it touches many lives as possible,” she stated.

President of the Dominica Red Cross, Phillip White, said he is pleased at the timely gesture by Scotiabank.

“We know the devastation that we encountered some two weeks ago and these funds will go a long way in assisting us in defraying some of our expenses,” White noted. “We are grateful to Scotiabank for stepping forward in providing the funds.”

He pointed out that there are a number of volunteers coming forward to assist in the recovery, lending a hand to those persons who are already enrolled with the Red Cross.

White gave the assurance that the funds will be “prudently managed”.

“We believe that Scotiabank has demonstrated over the years their corporate responsibility and in these times of need they have come forward again to demonstrate their commitment to Dominica,” he said.
