Minister for Telecommunications Ambrose George, has singled out the service clubs on the island, challenging them to make a more meaningful impact in curtailing some of the  ills currently plaguing the society.

Addressing the installation ceremony of eight new officers and induction of ten new members of the Kiwanis Club of Roseau on Monday evening, George urged clubs to play a greater role in stemming societal challenges.

“I believe that the Kiwanis Club is well poised to do so, and so some of your programming should gear towards dealing with some of the social challenges that we have. And even for example, the use of the social network amongst our young people, I think the clubs can play a role in that respect,” he said.

George, who represented prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said that while he understands the age of technology, the ills of the internet must be indoctrinated to the young and the old.

“Whilst we understand that the technology is at our doorsteps and we have to utilize it and as technology changes we do have to keep up with the pace of technology,” he noted. “But at the same time we have to inculcate in the minds of our young people and adults alike of the ills of the network and see how best we can drive the citizenry towards a more positive aspect of the internet and social network and technologies on a whole.”

Featured speaker at the event, Executive Director of the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) Nathalie Murphy, told the new members that being a service volunteer requires a long list of positive attributes.

“I first want to say that you should do it with humility, that you must do it with honor, with respect, with kindness, with patience, tolerance and most particularly with and in love,” she stated. “Any of you opposite to this is not worthy of you being a member of the Kiwanis club, or any organization for that matter”.

Murphy said such virtues are lacking today and service clubs should make a difference.

“You will agree with me that these virtues are lacking in our societies today, you just have to listen to some of the talk shows on the radio and you will understand what I mean,” she stated. “As new and current members of the Kiwanis club, you should make a difference, and you should sow seeds of love, rather than hatred, you should discourage division and encourage unity.”
