“Significant” road improvement coming for Giraudel, Eggleston says Benoit

A section of the road on the Eggleston side

Residents of Castle Comfort, Giraudel and Eggleston can expect to see significant improvement on the roads as work is ongoing in those areas.

That’s according to Caretaker of the Roseau South Constituency, Senator Jahisiah Benoit, Kairi FM has reported.

The work is part of lot 1 of the major road improvement project and is in the tune of $3.1 million.

“This contract was awarded to a very experienced contractor, Mr. Gilbert Guye and this lot will include the construction of a major retaining wall. It will be five meters high and 30 meters in length,” he said.

Benoit said in addition to this major retaining wall, the project will also include the construction of over 1,200 meters of ‘rigid pavement.’

“So that is, 1,200 meters of the road will be resurfaced and this will be done using reinforced concrete, of course. The road will be at least 18 feet wide average, five meters thick and reinforced with BRC Wire mesh,” he explained

In addition to the road surface, he stated that there will be an improvement of drainage all along the road network.

“The types of drain we will be using will be a mix of box drains and triangular drains where appropriate,” Benoit noted.

The road will happen. I am happy to tell all the Nay sayers that. I have always said that Colin Mc Intyre is the best man for this ministry. The DLP however, have lapsed on road issues. They allowed too much deterioration to take place before doing something about it. You will always keep rebuilding if you do not maintain! Next election please keep Colin in that portfolio.

Honestly, the arrogance of these fellers. Roseau south does not have a caretaker. It has a proper custodian and MP, Joshua who was selected by the people to represent them in Parliament, not that boy Benoit. Caretaker my foot.
If you want to unite the people Roosevelt you do not disrespect them in the first place so. That is nastiness.

      @Yourvsistervbrother
What does that unnecessary ‘caretaker’ remark convey? It tells us that anything that is done by this quasi dictatorial regime, politics is the biggest consideration. For this administration to provide basic needs for the communities, it must be politically advantageous to the DLP. A government’s job is to see to the welfare of the people. Unfortunately, the Skerrit’s regime is an imposter, it talks to itself, does things in its own best interest and neglects the dire needs of the people. Vote for CHANGE! Vote for a BRAND NEW DAY of REJOICING!

5 meters thick, that is 15 feet. One meter is 3 feet. Seems like a lot of concrete. A major undertaking, this is like building a fortress like was constructed on the Normandy coast of France in WW2. Length 1200 meters that is 3600 feet. Seems it will cost more than 3.1 million. 15 feet thick and 3600 feet long is a lot of concrete. Close to one mile. The numbers do not seem correct. Maybe they mean 5 feet thick and covered with asphalt and the rest road base. Maybe a road engineer can comment. Also what about slippage like the problem on the Antrim road, concrete is heavy. Unless there is proper drainage this will be a waste of money and hard work. The road will just slip away due to the heavy rains common on Dominica.

How can a government allow such well traveled roads to deteriorate to slabs of asphalt, stones ,gravel and dirt? This is inhumane. It’s miraculous that nobody got seriously injured on these roads. It’s hard to look at these roads without cringing. Skerrit’s rule is synonymous with a storm, unstable weather, ominous dark clouds, thunder and lightning and heavy and continuous downpours. It’s obvious, Skerrit does not have the mental or political acumen to lead the country. I’m certain he was not the valedictorian of his class.

    • October 25, 2018

@Ibo France, “You said It’s miraculous that nobody got seriously injured on these roads”.

I believe that your observation arises from the fact that the image is quite exaggerated. I am from Giraudel and I was in Dominica in 2013. The busses use the route from Roseau through Eggleston; into Giraudlel to Castle Comfort back to Roseau; I never experienced any discomfort while traveling, neither with the buses or my sisters’ vehicles, such as the photo is illustrating.

Yes, the road is quite winding and there is some form of improvement needed, to enhance comfort in traveling. But a small part of it, as is in the photo, does not make it the whole road. For no one can drive on a road of that state and not have constant accidents happening– how come it is not so?

Elizabeth, please do not try to defend the indefensible for you make yourself look and sound rather pea-brained. Are you telling me that the photos are lying? Why do you always subject yourself to ridicule by defending the glaring neglect, wrongdoings and gross incompetence of this oligarchic regime? Elizabeth, you are much better than this. I know that you are an erudite person but lately you have been sliding into the realm of the ridiculous. Defending Skerrit and his compliant and diabolical disciples is synonymous with defending sin.

Elisabeth, before you start accusing DNO photo shopping let me assure you that this image is unfortunately all too real and not selective.

Being in denial does not get our roads fixed. That is a function of central government, regardless who is in power.

Elizabeth you got this in your mail earlier this morning in our forum; I must say you are a deceitful upholder of everything that is wrong with this government, even when it is detrimental to you and your family.

Well it is only now I know something is wrong with you!

If you say you were in Dominica in 2013; we are in 2018, between 2013 and now is approximately five (5) years, within that time how many hurricanes hit Dominica?

How many torrential rain flooded the island? Have you ever heard the term “soil erosion” Note: since you last left Dominica you cannot count how many times the roads were flooded, the roads became saturated, and washed away, rendering them in the state in which they are. If you that the picture is exaggerated; I am now taking back the thumbs up I gave you on DNO, when you told the truth about Austrie.

You would be better off supporting Austrie than denying this!

Imagine, the people had to shame the administration into action. This is only being done because general elections are a stone throw away. The people will be bombarded with promises galore starting now. Don’t allow yourselves to be misled for the umpteenth time. Skerrit, the gaslighter, lies so much that he lies twice in a sentence. Don’t be effusive with your praise for the government for fixing this road after umpteen of years. This is no special favor. Providing the people with proper roads, schools, health and recreational facilities, adequate housing are some common responsibilities of a government. This inept regime has fallen short on every count. .

In DLP’s quest to win the next election by any means, this caretaker business became their mantra. .Remember after Maria the opposition, according to JI Joseph Isaac went to lazy Skerrit and offered to help, but caretakers came with food for votes instead? This was an inconscionable act of wickedness, and those MISLEADERS were punished by God so badly that those Wickeds are in trouble in 13 constituencies as real Dominicans are prepared to discard the gang of wickeds like old grapefruits.
They are in real ….,this time!!!!! No dimples or hand shakes,or smiles or money can do it for them …
Thank you Sikiri for putting pressure on the MISLEADERS for this road

“…the 1,200 meters of road…will be at least 18 feet wide (and) five meters thick…”

Unless it is a typing error, at that thickness the concrete trucks will be kept busy for a long time to come.

    October 25, 2018

But it will not go all the way to Giraudel village, nor will it cover its back roads which are also falling apart through years and years of neglect and the wear and tear of heavy equipment of the utilities companies. He doesn’t mention this, does he ? This is not building back better, nor is it climate resilience. It is nothing more than half a job.

    • October 25, 2018

@Giraudel resident October 25, 2018 “But it will not go all the way to Giraudel village”

You have just confirmed the “illusion” of that photograph of the News article. That photo is enlarged to make it seem like the whole road from Roseau through Egleston to Giraudel and to Castle Comfort back to Roseau is in that terrible state.

I really believe that this situation could have looked after without the publicity. Those kinds of situations are beginning to feel a bit concerned.

Elizabeth are you pretending your comprehension of the English language has become less effective that you are unable to understand what your own Giraudel resident wrote?

The person is not saying the photograph is exaggerated which is you contention; the person is condemning the condition which exists not only on that road but talking about other places which are not shown which are in the same condition!

The road will be 5 meters thick?
In its present condition anything they do to that road will be a significant improvement. That can no longer be classified as a road. The question that comes to mind is: Why was the road allowed to deteriorate to the point where it is barely passable?

  21. AA
    October 25, 2018

Hold on the road was allowed to deteriorate to such an extent and we have to be praising you for doing what you was suppose to have done in the first place? Are you kidding me, you people are not a shame of your leadership?
