Sinekou playing field 75 percent complete – Paris

Prosper Paris

As promised several years ago, residents of the Carib Territory may soon see the completion of a playing field in Sinekou.

After years of waiting, inquiring, and even an incident of protest action, Councilor of the Carib Council Prosper Paris has now affirmed that works are advancing well on the sporting facility. Paris said the field is 75 percent complete.

Speaking at a launching ceremony for Carib Week yesterday, the council member said that residents are satisfied with the works so far.

“The playing field is about three quarters complete. Most of the excavation work has been done… We had  a little hamper from the rain  but most of the major work has been done so far and the people are happy of the work that has been done so far so,” Paris stated.

As reported in an earlier publication, residents had protested in April this year, claiming that the government had presented the Carib Council with $250,000 for the construction of the facility but works had not begun for several months. The matter was resolved and work commenced in a matter of weeks.

According to Carib Chief Garnet Joseph during an interview after the protest, the delay was not the fault of the Carib Council. He mentioned several issues that had hindered the progress of the project including landownership.

Residents whose land had to be used for the playing field had consulted with lawyers on the matter, Joseph said.

“We had difficulties contracting someone so the work was passed on to the engineer that is attached to the Carib Territory. The design was presented to us, but more land was required for the playing field.  We spoke to the residents of the area, whose land was joined with the area designated to the playing field. They decided that they didn’t want to hand over the land until we used our powers. The owners of the land went to lawyers and that took some time; that slowed down the process,” Joseph had told media in April.

All play and no work, unemployment is so rampant in the carib territory. The roads are completely destroyed and there is a high rate of drug abuse amongst the youth. This present government for the past eight years has willfully neglected the carib reserve, all they present are quick fixes and no tangible development. The kalinago people needs effective representation and not some government appointee or dead beat chief. Finally we need markets for our agricultural products and arts and craft,it is clear to see that this government has fail to deliver any sustainable development to the kalinago peoples.

@Dominican Lover: Thanks for the enlightenment, i hope those who did not know, now know
Too often our people want things handed down to them,,,,just like the man from Pichelin can go and buy a piece of land in Warner, so can the man from the Territory go and buy a piece in partsmaouth.
…..my take on it is,,,keep the land commonly owned and the territory as one.

Good job with the playing field guys,,,keep up the good work. Soon we might have FIFA football matches there.

The Kalinago traditions is for the protection of all the Kalinago people. The reserve is yours it belong to all the Kalinago people. Those who want to leave the reserve are free to go and buy land elsewhere. but the reserve is to be held in deed for generations for the children and children children.

Once the land is divided and subdivided, then those with the certificates can sell the land or incur debts which means the land can be confiscated by the bank, then the land will be lost to future generations.

The unity of the tribe is in the fact that there is joint ownership of the territory it belongs not to any one family but to all the families.
What need to be done is for the leaders to come up with plans to develope the territory in unity, like the playing field.

Never sell the land or divide it and give certificate of title, That would be the beginning of the end for the people of the reserve.

In my mothers family there was family land one brother went and registered the land in his name, having the certificate of title he mortgaged the land did not pay the loan, and the family lost the land.

Who feels it knows it. A playing field in the Sineku area is a need. Our young people need a place to recreate. When the playing field is done, it will solve the problem of the young boys playing cricket on the road and obstructing traffic. The only thing is when it will be completed? The month before the next election? We will see………….

Be careful now, we can’t just change the carib traditions. We can give a bit more, but we need our Caribs to remain pure as possible, they are indeed special.
