Speaker of the House addresses Commonwealth Day ceremony

Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alix Boyd Knights

Speaker of the House of Assembly Alix Boyd Knights has highlighted the importance of Commonwealth Day.

She told a Commonwealth Day ceremony at the Arawak House of Culture  that 53 other nations and more than two billion citizens in five continents are celebrating commonwealth Day today.

“Over the years, members of Commonwealth countries have worked together as trusted partners for all Commonwealth people as a force of peace, democracy, equality and good governance, a catalyst of global-consensus building and a source of assistance for sustainable development and poverty eradication,” she told a ceremony today.

She said this year’s focus on the importance of science and technology is important.

“As we commemorate this day, we have the opportunity not only to celebrate the Commonwealth’s historic contributions to the developments of its peoples over the years, but also to look forward to collaborating with each other, to finding solutions to new challenges as they arise,” she said.

Meantime the Speaker told that gathering that the youth parliament will get underway next week Monday.

She said students of various schools will demonstrate their skills as they debate a motion based on this year’s Commonwealth theme.
