Statement by Prime Minister Skerrit on Harvey disaster in Texas

I wish to express my empathy and solidarity with the Government of the United States of America and more particularly, the residents of the state of Texas, Houston more specifically.

Clearly, this is a catastrophic disaster which took place in Texas. We know very well in Dominica the extent of dislocation, the extent of damage that these natural disasters can cause, and just almost exactly two years ago, we suffered a similar fate.

When I look at the thousands of families that have been affected, it really, really touches my heart as a world citizen, and I know that we have several Dominican families resident in Houston. I have had the opportunity to reach out directly to some of them and to express our concern and indicated to them the willingness of Dominica to assist where we can.

I intend to visit Houston myself personally at the earliest opportunity to meet with Dominican residents there and to see how we can assist in restoring their lives to normalcy.

One of the things I would like to propose is for us to reach out to our new citizens, in particular, those high-net-worth citizens and see whether we can have some fund raising drive to assist our Dominican citizens who have been affected by this tragic flooding and so forth.

Just looking at what is on the news, it is really touching, and speaking to Dominicans who were affected, who had to be rescued by small boats and pubic authorities, they recounted to me the loss of their homes, their belongings, their homes are flooded completely.

I also have American friends who are resident in Houston whom I have spoken to, they themselves had to be rescued indicating that they had lost everything. So it really a tragedy and we want to express our solidarity with the President, the government and people of the United States, the Governor and Mayor of the city of Houston.

We want to reach out to them and say that our prayers and thoughts are with them in this very difficult circumstance, for any country, notwithstanding the size and the economy of the United States of America, no matter how small or large you are, you will be affected, and these disasters, you never know when they are coming.

We are in the Hurricane Season. The Hurricane Season now has been extended and we in Dominica have to continue to be vigilant and the rest of the Caribbean.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we look forward to reaching out to the Dominican residents who have been affected by this tragedy.

Dominicans will always stay backwards because of u all mentality. Everything is political.

  2. August 29, 2017

Your government is committed to you, no matter where you are in this world. A PM that cares and makes himself available to assist his people. I love this man R.Skerrit! Be vigilant DA’s soldiers.

  3. August 29, 2017

Hold strong Dominicans, we will stand and support you through whatever.

  4. August 29, 2017

I’m sure your people will be happy to meet with you my good PM. This is a set back the people but things will work out. There are over 300 Dominicans in Houston, they should support each other and remember they are strong and resilient. We don’t stay down for too long. Your government and your entire country have you all in our thoughts, hold strong.

  5. August 29, 2017

Yes I PM, looking out for your people always!

  6. August 29, 2017

I also empathize with the people of Houston and other towns in the US who are affected. This is a major issue the word over and we have to lend support even if we do so in kind words and prayer. This too shall pass. Prayers for those affected.

Kind words Mr. Skerrit but if I were you I would either allow Reggie or the opposition leader to address the Americans, on our behalf because by you addressing them two things come to mind:

    1. You reminded them of where you were seen on August 25&26 2015, with NG Lap Seng, who is now convicted of bribery among other things, eating, drinking, cutting cake and signing documents.

#2. It reminds the Americans that from that group of corrupt diplomats you were seen with, you Roosevelt Skerrit is the only one that has not been arrested by the FBI, especially since that time they have heard of the arrest of Aliereza Monfared, who was a wanted criminal and some how he got a Diplomatic passport of Dominica and was in Dominica for 6 months. Not only that but they also heard of the arrest of Allison Madueke, who also is of interest to the US, and off course Francisco Corallo, all of whom had a diplomatic passport of Dominica and were all wanted by law agencies across the world.,

This is what a Head of State should do. How can anyone criticize feeling for others? It is this fundamental attribute in its sincerest form that separates us from the beasts in the jungle.

“I wish to express my empathy and solidarity with the Government of the United States of America and more particularly, the residents.”(Roosevelt Skerrit).

Such hogwash; who in America solicited Roosevelt empathy? If it floods for another year, nobody in Houston city government, or individuals are looking to anybody for help, at least they will never ask Roosevelt for any of his diplomatic passport money. For your information boy, Roosevelt Houston is the largest industrial city in the entire United States.

This is not the first experience with flooding; fire and chemical disasters. In spite of the flooding its business as usual in Houston, and the surroundings cities and towns; like Bay Town Fresno Beaumont, and other small communities.

The people who do not have Home Owners insurance, have renters insurance, those without FEMA takes care of them. We do not beg for help on this side of the equator!

He is more agile than everyone. He is the champion of agility. Who could be so agile as to crash a Heads of Government Conference, scam security details, scam protocol officers and then call a press conference to show his diplomatic passport. Who scam the whole of Roseau to give him money to pay for legal fees. He is as agile as a pirate, a liar and a gate crasher. He should get a PHD for that. He should get celebrity and hero status.
I am sure %, aka Rose Valley, aka Ronald B Charles, aka Norway Rat and their friends Bogaroy and Kenneth Rijerk would celebrate his agility with pump and splendor, with bells and wisles.

Today is August 29th, the anniversary of Hurricane David. Not a word about it in our media. The same thing happened on May 29th……oh how quickly we forget. The calyspsonian Dice says that a history that is forgotten is one that is doomed to be repeated. Lets not forget what we have been through and how far we have come…….

Well said, instead Matt is broadcasting to the public that PM Skerrit will be going to Houston especially when their is no confirmation from the PM office, PM just mentioned it is passing and he will not go without getting the correct details first how did it became a news item about the PM. Matt you said you got an invitation to come up there and you felt it’s not the right time so why do you believe it’s ok for the public to congratulate the PM for the statement he made last evening.
Trump went down to Texas and couldn’t even go where the devastation took place all the departments that is set up within the Government in the U S is on the grown to help the people what they don’t have time for is any other non Government persons from outside to keep them safe,
PM should be on the phone to those Dominicans he can reach over there giving them moral support which they need at this time and they would be happy to hear from him it’s not a time to show off .

  13. August 29, 2017

At times we need to keep our mouths shut, look and observe. God’ messages usually come in various degrees, are we listening? i am not a church rat, but the most high is real. Just recently, Trump pulled the USA out of the global warming treaty against the wishes of all concerned, even the prime minister i believe, voiced his opinion, as we speak, south Asian countries are having the same devastating effects. I will continue to say, as i have said in my previous postings, the wrongs committed will be given back ten fold, the GOD’ are watching.Bob D.

He’s right to convey best wishes to those affected by the terrible flooding in Houston. But it’s important to remember that the Western mainstream media doesn’t cover the world equally, and that it would also be an appropriate gesture to do the same for those in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh who at present are facing even more serious calamity from flooding:

Steven, what does Roosevelt empathy means to anybody in the continental United States?

The same as how the millions of American does not know a place as Dominica exists, it the same they do not know who the heck is Roosevelt Skerrit!

Here this: I worked for a company years ago, only to find out I made a mistake using a wrong social security number; so, I went to the human resources to make the correction. The lady I was talking to became fascinated with my accent, and enquired whence I came.

Realizing I am not an American born!

I responded by telling her, ” I am from the Commonwealth of Dominica” she said okay, I know where that is!

So, curiosity overwhelm me as I ask “you do?” She responded by saying yes! That’s in Texas.

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

Steve, I have my name along with Dominica written on a registration plate, I drive all across America, Canada, and parts of Mexico, the name Dominica was only recognized ones by a Puerto Rican, the…

So what? If it’s the right thing to do, do it without regard to recognition.

Skerrit while I empathize with all those affected in the state of Texas upon the passage of Hurricane Harvey, I cannot but call you a world HYPOCRITE, and this is exactly what you are. You are quite aware that in Dominica 2 years after the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, there are villages which were severely affected, and your lazy, inept and myopic DLP government has virtually abandoned these people. I can mention Coulibistrie and Bath Estate (Paradise Valley). Is it because these communities are part of UWP constituencies So who are you really talking to. Is it your unsuspecting DLP supporters? You are a showman, but you don’t care a darn about Dominica or Dominicans. How many broken bridges have been repaired 2years since Erika? Are you real Skerrit. You are an accomplished HYPOCRITE.

The only Hypocrite is you and Linton and the mob minded haters called the UWP. There are a lot of Dominicans in Texas and particularly in Houston who appreciate the P M concerns. Have we already how the PM took immediate charge of the Erica situation. When UWP refuse the invitation of the P M to contribute. Name me one thing UWP and their leaders did to help. Name me one person they helped. They did not visit their constituencies, much less help the people. All they offered was accusations and obstruction.
They could scam funds to pay Linton legal fees with the help of Q95. They could organise Layou to Roseau match, but in time of need caused by Erica it was no show.
This is typical of the UWP mob. Always on the path of distruction. They are the ones who will be going, because when the action gets tough they will keep going. The doom they are advocating for Dominica will fall on them, fire will fall on you The main hypocrites are you %, aka Rose Valley, aka Ronald
      B. Charles.
